Furniture for a nursery should be of high quality, environmentally friendly, hypoallergenic. But many manufacturers do not pay attention to the increased requirements for children's furniture - they use materials of poor quality, make the fasteners unreliable. Using such furniture can harm your child. This is why some parents come to the conclusion that it is worth making a children's table and highchair with their own hands. Moreover, it is not so difficult to assemble it.

Of course, when choosing a material for children's furniture, you should opt for natural solid wood. A wooden table and chair will not only be a decoration in a children's room, but also environmentally friendly, will not cause allergies, and will become practical pieces of furniture.
The table and chair are best made of beech wood. It is easy to process and does not release gum. But as a budget option, pine or birch is quite suitable, only they need to be degummed, since the resin is unsafe for the child, and even clothes can ruin.
Plywood, as the cheapest material, is also quite acceptable in the manufacture of a highchair. It can easily bear the weight of a child, lightweight, and easy to handle.
Chipboard is a very fragile material and can only be suitable for countertops.
Alternatively, you can build a table and a chair made of plastic bottles in the dacha in the playground area. At the same time, there is practically no need to invest money, and when exposed to weather conditions, such a kit will have nothing.
Training
Initially, you need to make detailed drawings with all dimensions. Please note that when planning furniture for a child, sharp corners should not be made, about which the child can get hurt during active games.
If you are not entirely sure about the stability, before making parts from wood, make a layout out of cardboard at a scale of 1: 1.
You can use spikes and glue to fasten the parts, but for the reliability of the structure, it is better to use self-tapping screws and corners of various shapes.
Material handling
All parts must be processed before assembly. To do this, you can use an electric plane, or sand the wood with sandpaper.
Then you can treat it with various dyes such as wood stain, rather than just emphasize the texture of the wood or paint.
If you want to varnish your products, it is better to choose it based on turpentine. It does not contain toxic substances and will not harm your child's health. After you have covered the parts with varnish, you need to sand it with sandpaper. And then cover with a finishing coat of varnish. In this case, the wood will be well protected, and the shine will not disappear for many years.
Making a regular chair and table
To assemble a regular chair, we need to cut out the following parts:
- Short legs - 2 pieces, 25 cm long, 3.3 x 3.8 cm section.
- Long legs - 2 pieces, 53 cm high, with a section of 3.3x3.8 cm.
- Backrest - 1 piece, measuring 10x30 cm.
- Seat - 1 piece, size 30x30 cm.
Crossbars for strapping the chair under the seat - 2 pieces, 25.7 cm long, 2 pieces 25.2 cm long.
In this case, the legs should have a narrowing from the middle of the chair. Long, reduce the thickness to the top to 1.9 cm, and short - to the bottom to 2.4 cm. This is necessary so that the front legs do not interfere with the legs, and the back is slightly inclined.
First, we fasten the rear legs, for this we screw the crossbar between them with self-tapping screws. We do the same with the front ones, and attach them to each other.
Then we fasten the back. We check that all parts have a clear horizontal fastening. Otherwise, the aesthetic appearance of the chair will not be very good.
At the end of the assembly, we fasten the seat.
For the table, we need 4 legs, strapping from the same bar. We make them from a bar and a tabletop, we make it from plywood or chipboard. The sizes here depend on your wishes and the height of the child.
We assemble the harness, attach the legs to the corners and fasten the tabletop on top. The table is ready. The size of the screw must be carefully selected, otherwise you can drill through the tabletop, which will disrupt the aesthetic appearance and may injure your child.
Making a plywood chair
Since plywood is easy to process. It is easy to make a carved chair out of it.
In order to make it you will need:
- Plywood sheet, 8 mm thick.
- Drill, jigsaw.
- Drill, screws.
- Sandpaper.
- PVA glue.
- Turpentine-based colorless varnish.
Based on our dimensions, we transfer the drawing of the chair to a sheet of plywood. With a jigsaw, you can cut out an unusual shape of the hole, which will give an interesting look to the chair.
In order for the sides of the chair to be completely identical, you must first cut out one, then circle it on a sheet of plywood so that the second side wall completely coincides with the first.
You can make them in the form of an elephant. You get the original design of the chair.
After all the parts have been cut out, the sections must be carefully sanded with sandpaper.
We assemble the chair, for this we fix the seat and back with glue, and fix everything with self-tapping screws.
We cover the chair with varnish.
Making a highchair for baby feeding
The simplest model of this chair is a transformer, which can be easily expanded into a separate small table and chair.
The base is made of solid wood, the back and seat of the chair are made of plywood. The table top is made of laminated chipboard.
We need a wooden block with a section of 20x40 mm, laminated chipboard, 200x340 in size for a tabletop on a chair and 450x380 mm on a table, plywood for a seat. In the absence of chipboard, countertops can also be made of plywood.
First, we collect the table. We make two frames from the bars. We connect them with crossbars so that later you can insert the legs of the chair between them. We fasten the countertop.
The chair is made in the same way as a regular chair, only for the seat and back we use plywood, on which you can sew an oilcloth cover and insert foam rubber for softness. This will allow you to easily wash the highchair if the baby stains it with food, and will not allow the foam rubber to get wet.
Other types
If you have a soldering iron for plastic pipes, you can easily make an original chair for a summer residence from the remains of polypropylene. Here we make the frame from pipes and adapters, and weave the seat itself from threads or sew from dense fabric.
You can also make furniture for the dacha from plastic bottles. To do this, we select bottles of the same size. A child is quite sufficient with a capacity of 1 liter. We wrap with tape, forming a seat. To make the surface even, cover it with a wooden box. It remains to sew a leatherette cover, and an excellent garden stool is ready.
How to decorate
Even the sturdiest DIY furniture may not please your child. Therefore, it needs to be decorated. To do this, you can use different methods.
Bright paint. This is the simplest method. You can paint the table and chair with bright paint before varnishing, thereby attracting the child's attention.
If you have the ability to draw, you can draw various cartoon characters or just apply a child's drawing.
If your chair does not look very beautiful, but reliable, then all the flaws can be hidden by sewing a fabric cover. It can always be washed if necessary.
Another method for decorating a chair is stickers. You can buy them ready-made or make yourself from self-adhesive film using a stencil.
