It's no secret that a fireplace as a heating device is much weaker than other heating installations. Rather, it is a decorative piece of furniture that decorates a room. But no matter who says anything, it is a very pleasant pastime to sit by the fireplace in a cold evening.
In order to increase the amount of heat given off by the fireplace, special ventilation grilles for fireplaces were invented.
Forged grilles are very popular and look very beautiful. They are made in a wide variety of shapes and patterns. The lattice can be made by yourself, if you have certain skills for this, or you can order a blacksmith, having thought over a preliminary sketch. It should be borne in mind that forged gratings of different heights will also differ in the density of the pattern:
- on a low lattice, the pattern should be dense;
- on medium - medium density;
- high - rare.
This ratio is necessary so that warm air can freely enter the room and at the same time not block the beauty of the burning flame.
How to make
A wrought iron lattice begins with a sketch on paper and with the choice of the material from which the fence will be made.
The first step is to make the base, that is, the frame. It can be solid or consist of two doors that will open with hinges.
Then the frame is decorated with decorative elements and all sorts of patterns:
- forged curls;
- a vine of grapes;
- little animals;
- heraldry and the like.
Such elements can be performed only by blacksmithing masters who have not only a welding machine on their own, but also have the talent of an artist.
To make the simplest fireplace grate, you need to prepare a metal corner, as well as chains. It doesn't matter what kind of weaving the chains are, as long as the links are not too large. Next, we take a corner and cut it to the size of the fireplace insert, and attach chains to the corner itself. Now it remains to attach this entire structure to the fireplace - the beauty is ready. Such a design can be selected according to the type of curtains on specially built-in hooks (for example, when the fire in the firebox is only slightly smoldering).
Principle of operation
It would seem, how, because of the fireplace grate, the room can become warmer? And the whole point is that the grates are installed on the facing of the fireplace at different levels. Through the one below, a cold stream of air enters the fireplace, and through the one above, the already warm air enters the room.
If we are talking about a fireplace during the planning of a new house, then it is possible to make a fireplace with air ducts, and then each of them will also end with a ventilation grate.
But this method is not very effective for heating, because the power of one fireplace will not be enough, the heat will simply dissipate and, as a result, it will be cold everywhere. It is better to heat only the room where the fireplace is located.
What are the benefits?
Large costs for the installation of a fireplace ventilation grate will not be required, but the benefits from its use are obvious:
- this decoration for the entire interior of the room;
- the fireplace insert, its lining and the box itself will not overheat, due to the outflow of part of the hot air into the room (and this extends the life of the fireplace);
- The efficiency of the fireplace will be higher;
- thanks to the ventilation grill, the room will need 30 percent less additional heating.
Lattice types and their choice
There are a lot of ventilation grilles produced today and they have some differences.
An irregular shape is, as a rule, an individual order for a specific fireplace, so there are practically no such grilles on sale. And the price for them is much higher than for standard models.
The holes themselves differ in shape:
But the shape of both the products and the holes is not the main thing, the main thing is the size. If the area of the hole is not large enough, little air will enter the room, and therefore it will not heat up. No special calculations are needed here, just the power of the firebox must correspond to the size of the grate.
In the store, on the product itself, it is precisely its dimensions are indicated, and not the dimensions of the hole for which this grill is intended. And you should choose the grate, knowing the dimensions of the firebox itself. There can be no standards here, and therefore grates for fireplaces have a variety of dimensions.
More about the material of manufacture
It is clear that such a building material as, for example, plastic is definitely not suitable in this case. And this is understandable, because the fireplace can heat up to 150C, and therefore the ventilation grill is made only from:
- cast iron.
By design, the fireplace grate can be solid, welded and forged. The most popular are solid and welded products, and there is a great variety of them in the assortment. There is less demand for forged grilles due to their high cost, although they look, of course, much more solid than the first two options. Forged items are sold in small quantities and are usually custom made.
Fireplace grates are designed in different ways. If it is a mass model, a simple pattern is applied to it, or there may be no pattern at all. On more expensive models, there is decor in the form of an ornament, images of certain animals or other figures.
For the decorative coating of the fireplace grate, they use a special heat-resistant paint or use the method of electroplating, for which they use metals such as copper, chrome, nickel or even precious metals (you cannot forbid living beautifully, as they say).
Fireplace grates will be easier to maintain if you have the following components:
- covers (hinged or sliding), with the help of which it is easier to completely close the grill;
- fine insect net;
- louvers for adjusting the amount of air.
It is worth noting that the fireplace grate can be made not only in a solid version, but also in a removable one, when only the grate frame is mounted in the fireplace facing, and everything else is removed or moved to one side. It is very convenient for internal inspection of the fireplace and for cleaning it.
Brands and prices
An important factor when buying a fireplace grate is, of course, its cost, as well as the manufacturer. There are only two well-known manufacturers of fireplace products among all CIS countries - these are Kratki and Darco.
Regarding the cost of the relatively most popular types and sizes of fireplace grates (Russian rubles):
- steel painted lattice of size 17 * 17, with blinds - from 1000 to 1200;
- painted steel lattice 17 * 30 in size, with blinds - from 1200 to 1500;
- painted steel lattice 17 * 30 without shutters - from 1000 to 1200;
- - fireplace grate made of galvanized steel 22 * 22 - from 1900 to 2100.
Special points to be aware of before proceeding with the installation of the grille:
- the outlet of warm air should be at least 30 centimeters from the ceiling;
- the lattice should be directed deep into the space of the room;
- not next to the doorway (the further the better).
You can mount the fireplace grate when building a fireplace, or you can also on a finished structure. How exactly does this happen:
- first of all, we cut out a hole corresponding to the lattice in size and shape, and add a couple of millimeters to its dimensions;
- we drive a nail into the box with a wire wound around it (the lattice will be fixed on it);
- we cling to the grate and insulate the cracks that remain between the box and the frame with a heat-resistant sealant.

About overhead grilles
The difference between metal overhead ventilation grilles from ordinary ones is that they are attached to the exhaust opening on the air duct with liquid nails or self-tapping screws. Such installation is economically profitable, because the overhead element is much cheaper than traditional products, and it is simpler in design. So buyers stop their choice on an overhead metal grill quite often.
About the rules of maintenance and care
During the operation of a fireplace with a ventilation grill, you may encounter some problems that arise when it is incorrectly installed:
- cold or only slightly warm air can come out of the outlet - this indicates cracks and cracks in the box itself or about low fire;
- smoke comes through the grate into the room - check the connection of the firebox to the chimney;
- the grille has turned black - the box has poor thermal insulation.
If the fireplace has a grate with fine holes, it should be cleaned more often than other grates. This procedure should be carried out at least once every six months, namely, when the cold season comes and when the fireplace is no longer needed. If this is not done, then through the clogged grate the air simply will not be able to enter the room normally.
When they stop using the fireplace, it is better to close the grate on it, otherwise insects can penetrate inside.
