The fireplace is an attribute of many houses, allowing you to create an atmosphere of warmth and comfort in them. Ceramic tiles are increasingly used as the main material for decorative finishes. They select it not only for technical parameters, but also for its external design, which makes it possible to give the design originality.

Ceramic properties

Facing tiles are made from various materials, but only heat-resistant products are suitable for decorating stoves and fireplaces. They are able to withstand high temperatures without breaking their structure. In addition to the previously indicated parameter, ceramic tiles for fireplaces have a number of properties characteristic of similar types of materials:

  1. Water absorption. Ceramics for stoves should absorb a minimum of moisture, since water can simply tear it apart when heated. Therefore, high-quality tiles used for such purposes are characterized by a water absorption coefficient of no more than 3%.
  2. Heat accumulation. This indicator is quite difficult to measure, since it depends not only on the thickness of the tile, but also on its internal structure and density. Therefore, when buying this product, you should first take into account this value and the conditions of its use. The thickness of heat-resistant materials must be at least 8 mm in order to efficiently store heat.
  3. Environmental friendliness. High-quality heat-resistant tiles do not emit toxic substances when heated into the air. This must be evidenced by special quality certificates.

Tile classification

Ceramic tiles for decorating fireplaces have many characteristics, which are the basis for dividing them into the following types:

Terracotta. Such a facing material is obtained from dense, compressible clays. The outer side of the tile is rough and the structure itself mimics materials such as natural stone or brick. Terracotta is a high-quality, durable and refractory product with good heat transfer rates

Majolica. Such a product is obtained by firing clay. Externally, such a tile is covered with a layer of glaze with various decorative patterns. It should be noted that the painting is applied manually, so the cost of this product is much higher than that of its other counterparts

Clinker tiles. The process of its manufacture involves mixing chamotte powder and shale clay. Also, other products can be added to the composition, which allow you to slightly change the properties of the material. The clinker differs from the previous two types in its higher density, therefore it absorbs much less moisture and is resistant to frost. The optimal environment for using clinker tiles is constant temperature drops

Tiles. Tiled tiles in their structure resemble a box, but outwardly they are smooth and embossed. For protection, the product is covered with several layers of glaze or enamel. Tiles are handmade materials, which also affects its cost. It should be noted that tiles are completely safe for humans and have excellent heat transfer rates

Fireclay tiles are a product of a combination of natural clay and stone flour, which are mixed and fired at temperatures of about 1300 degrees. This product practically does not crack, withstands high static loads, and therefore it can be faced not only with a fireplace, but also with a stove

Porcelain stoneware is a durable material that is obtained from quartz sand, clay, marble chips and oxides of various metals. Tiles of this type are resistant not only to high temperatures, but also to low temperatures, which allows them to be used outside

Cladding technology

The process of external decoration of the fireplace is carried out in several sequential stages:

  1. Surface preparation. This process involves cleaning old finishes from brickwork, removing dust and dirt. Also at this stage, the surface is plastered with special solutions based on ordinary cement. For additional reinforcement, a fiberglass mesh with small cells can be attached to the frame.
  2. At the second stage, the wall cladding is performed. For this, an adhesive solution is initially prepared according to the manufacturer's recommendations. Tile fixing starts from the bottom row, which is the main one. The adhesive is applied to the surface of the cladding material, not to the fireplace itself. Then the tile is simply applied to the base and leveled.

The gluing technology is no different from the standard application of other similar substances. Only here special heat-resistant groutings are already used, and not conventional compounds.

When choosing a ceramic tile for a fireplace, you must first evaluate its technical properties, and only then give preference to a particular design or type.
