Even when it is raining and slush outside the window, houses near the fireplace with crackling firewood are always warm and cozy. Someone likes to smoke a pipe at such moments, someone likes to drink tea, climbing into an easy chair, and someone is simply delighted by the cheerful lights of the flame, from which you do not want to look away. But all these pleasures will not be possible if there is no fireplace in the house.

The main functions of fireplaces

For a long time, the following functions have been assigned to the fireplace:

Cold protection

He was supposed to protect the room from the cold, and once there was no alternative to such heating, but not today. Today, centralized and individual heating does much better with this function, although no one is going to give up the fireplace either.

Cooking

You can cook food on the fireplace. It is clear that the modern kitchen is stuffed with such equipment that there simply cannot be any problems with the preparation of any dish. But how can such a food, in terms of its aroma alone, be compared to the one that was cooked over the fire? And here is a fireplace on which you can bake both meat and vegetables - just an irreplaceable thing.

Decor

The fireplace today is a decorative decoration of the whole room, we can say that the fireplace is its soul. Today, a fireplace is comfort, joy and inspiration for all guests and household members.

It is for this reason that, most likely, even if it is impossible to have a real fireplace in the room, you can often see an imitation of it in it - with inanimate fire and a fake crackle of fake firewood. And still, even from such a fireplace, the soul becomes a little warmer and more joyful.

Fireplace types

Building a foundation for a fireplace is almost the same as building a foundation for a house, just a smaller area. Basically, there are three types of fireplaces

  1. When the fireplace is attached to an already finished wall. It is convenient to use this method in a building that has already been completed.
  2. When the fireplace is built into the wall. This option is suitable for the stage at which the house is just being formed - from the design of the foundation, from its marking and from the construction of the formwork.
  3. Freestanding fireplaces. They can be installed anywhere, anytime.

In order for the fireplace to work stably, in order to avoid smoke, soot shedding and other troubles, you need to carefully measure all the overall proportions between the foundation, chimney, body, firebox and smoke collector.

About sizes

The basic rule that must be followed when building a foundation for classic fireplaces is that its area must necessarily be several times larger than the area of the base of the fireplace itself. More specifically, the foundation should extend beyond the area occupied by the fireplace, by an amount from one meter to one and a half meters.

How deep the foundation should be depends on the characteristics of the soil on which it is being erected: how much it will freeze and what is its flowability.

According to the construction minimum, the depth cannot be less than half a meter, and for a two-story house, the depth of the foundation can even reach a meter.

In any case, what the width of the pit will be should be determined only after all the dimensions of the future fireplace have been calculated, and the so-called error must be added to all dimensions - this is about 15 millimeters more.

Many of those people who are thinking about buying a fireplace begin to ask themselves whether it is really necessary to build a separate foundation for it. But there are many models of fireplaces, some of them are light, while others are heavy.

Image
Image

If the fireplace weighs from 350 to 500 kg, then a foundation is not needed for it; it is allowed to install it even on the upper floors of buildings. And this is understandable, because their weight will not add significant load to the floors.

Image
Image

But for a fireplace weighing one ton, everything is different. The foundation is needed, and very solid, otherwise the device will simply begin to sink into the ground over time. The base of such a fireplace must be separated from the foundation of the building with compacted sand of a half-meter height, and the foundation itself must be leveled on top and the horizon must be checked with a level.

Image

The floor level should eventually be eight centimeters higher than the foundation for the fireplace. 2 layers of roofing material covered with bitumen are laid on the foundation. So the masonry will not be afraid of moisture coming from the soil.

For a sufficiently light fireplace, as for any other light construction, a lightweight foundation can be erected.

Lightweight

The options may be different, it all depends on what kind of soil this structure will be built on. For non-porous soil, a simple foundation without reinforcement will suffice. A lightweight foundation is called a foundation, at the base of which there is a sand cushion. To lay and erect such a foundation, you need a hole at least half a meter deep. Sand 15 cm thick is laid in it, and water is poured over it, then sand again and everything is repeated until the surface is 30 cm.

The sand compacted in this way is covered with the upper part of the foundation: crushed stone, stone, brick or gravel. Some professionals use other materials for this purpose, such as ceramics, concrete products or slate debris.

Outdoor fireplace

This device differs in many ways from a room fireplace. Such strict safety measures are not required, neither a damper nor an opening for a chimney is needed. The whole family can have a great time in the fresh air by such a fireplace.

But a street fireplace cannot do without a foundation. It is best to put it on foundation blocks, which in this case will be the most convenient basis for a street hearth. This material is both convenient, and the base immediately turns out to be even and there is no pain with its additional alignment.

Pile

On the pile foundation, a fireplace is installed on heaving ground. By design, it consists of four piles connected by a reinforced concrete tie. The piles themselves are either also reinforced concrete, or are cement-reinforced pipes into which concrete has been poured. Such a support can be pressed with a force of 6 tons, which includes the weight of the foundation (1.5 tons), the fireplace itself and the chimney (4.5 tons).

Image

If the pile foundation is built according to the rules, it will quite withstand a brick fireplace.

The most common are two types of fireplace foundations:

  1. The solid base is a foundation made of broken bricks, small stones and gravel. The second type of supports are installed so that there is a distance between them less than two bricks. A foundation erected in this way is perfect for a classic fireplace in a country house made of wood.
  2. The columnar base is the foundation for classic and modern fireplaces. They are usually located near the wall, but you can also mount it in one of the corners of the room.

For the construction of the base of the fireplace, as well as for the chimney, concrete, red brick or rubble stone are traditionally used. In the future, the pressure of the entire mass of the fireplace will be exerted on the foundation, therefore it must be made as strong as possible.

Image
Image

It should always be remembered that the foundation for the walls and the foundation for the fireplace will have completely different loads, and they will also have completely different shrinkage from operation.

Image
Image

This fact should warn anyone who tries to do everything in one fell swoop - this should never be done. Any other foundation should be located from the foundation under the fireplace through a gap with sand, and the width of this gap should be at least 5 centimeters.

How to associate with the floor?

Tying together the surface of the floor and the foundation of the fireplace is not difficult. First you need to choose the material for the foundation, decide on the place on which the fireplace will stand, and then, based on the size of the future fireplace, calculate the size of the base and get to work.

In the case of using traditional concrete pouring of the foundation, temporary formwork will also be required. It should take at least a day to solidify such a foundation.

What kind of fireplace does not require a foundation?

Preparing everything for work and filling the foundation is a rather laborious and long process, so many would like to do without this stage of work, but so that it does not affect the work of the fireplace. It turns out that there is such an opportunity, only in this case the fireplace turns into another device and it is called a potbelly stove.

Image
Image

This is a metal heating device capable of operating on any solid fuel. In this case, there is no foundation, and the stove is simply on the floor.

Image

The use of such heating equipment allows you to heat the room in which it is located, and there are also such models of stoves on which you can cook food and see how tongues of flame dance their magic dance inside it.

Despite the simplicity of its device, the stove-stove is also capable of looking aesthetically pleasing and modern. It can be decorated in a decorative plasterboard portal, you can use concrete, natural stone and even wood. In such a decorative design, a simple stove-stove becomes a real copy of a classic fireplace.

Erecting a foundation for a fireplace is not a very difficult task, the main thing here is not to deviate from the rules and advice of professionals, because the longevity of the fireplace largely depends on the foundation.
