Rules and requirements

In order for the operation of the fireplace to be comfortable and safe, when installing the fireplace, it is necessary to comply with fire safety standards and ensure the necessary air flow, and most importantly, the removal of combustion products (gases, smoke).

Image
Image
Image
Image

This requirement does not depend on which option you plan to implement: an independent laying out of a fireplace or a ready-made fireplace stove, which you will cover with facing material.

Image
Image

The second option is easier to implement. The manufacturer of ready-made fireplaces in the instructions indicates the installation conditions characteristic of the type of material from which the house is built, the volume of the room required for high-quality and safe work and the location of the chimney.

Image
Image

Installation of a fireplace in a house made of wood is a multistage and complicated process compared to installing the same unit in a house made of non-combustible materials, since it is necessary to provide for an additional distance from the walls to the fireplace, increased attention should be paid to the insulation and tightness of the chimney connecting elements.

Safety is the main criterion when using this type of equipment. If you decide to do the installation yourself, entrust the development of the project of the future fireplace to professionals.

Only after qualified consultation and a well-developed project, proceed with the preparatory work, which is carried out in the following order:

  1. Choosing a place for installation. Depending on the size of the room, select the type of cast-iron firebox, which will serve as the basis for creating a fireplace. Wall locations are an option suitable for large spaces. The variant of the location of the fireplace in the corner of the room is optimal for small rooms (it is worth remembering that a room of at least 20 m2 is required for the safe operation of the firebox)
  2. Preparation of the base for installation.
  3. Installation of a finished fireplace or cast iron firebox, or laying out a fireplace stove.
  4. Installation of a smoke exhaust structure.
  5. Fireplace facing.
  6. Test run.

Installation materials

To carry out the actions described above, you will need the following materials and tools:

  1. cement
  2. flame retardant glue
  3. mastic
  4. Master OK
  5. composite or steel reinforcing bars
  6. chimney, if necessary with several "bends", with a diameter of at least 200 mm
  7. brackets
  8. construction level
  9. roulette
  10. plumb line
  11. grinder with several types of discs for working with different materials (metal, stone or porcelain stoneware)
  12. hammer drill or impact drill
  13. screwdriver and a set of screwdrivers of different lengths
  14. insulating materials to reduce heat transfer from the chimney.

DIY installation

Modern finished products allow you to install a fireplace stove yourself in any building: in the country, in a townhouse and a cottage. A wide range of offers from manufacturers of fireplaces and inserts will allow you to choose a fireplace with an individual design. Your flight of imagination is limited only by the size of the room and financial possibilities.

Image
Image

Determine for yourself the purpose of the fireplace. It can perform both a decorative and a practical task - to provide heating of the room, including the attic (fireplace type of heating is widespread in Europe).

Image

Fireplace inserts are of two types: open and closed (cassette). The difference between them is clear from the name, but with the functionality it is a little more complicated. For heating a room, a more closed type is suitable. For aesthetic pleasure - open.

Preparation of the base

To install the fireplace, prepare a pedestal on which the stove will be installed later. Without a perfectly flat foundation, the fireplace will not be able to function normally. The plinth must be solid and stable. The ideal material for it will be a brick (preferably fireproof), or a cement slab or marble base.

Image
Image

An important point is the calculation of the load of the floors. If you are planning to install a fireplace on the upper floors of a building, make sure that the floors can withstand the stresses of the plinth and stove. If you install a pedestal on a plank covering, we recommend making an interlayer of basalt wool between the floor and the base, on which you will install the fireplace in the future.

The next stage is the preparation of the walls. If they are made of flammable materials (covered with wallpaper and other materials), then it is necessary to protect the surface in which the stove will be installed. This can be done in several ways:

  1. lay out the brickwork
  2. overlay with porcelain stoneware or artificial stone, having previously selected samples with the lowest thermal conductivity. This step is relevant for a wall fireplace.

Firebox

A cast-iron U-shaped plate is laid on a previously prepared pedestal, which is fixed with heat-resistant glue or mastic. The side parts of the slab go deeper into the wall (be sure to use a level to assess the evenness of the surface - this must be done before the glue or mastic has set, and adjustments can be made). As soon as the stove is adjusted horizontally, you can start installing the firebox itself. The distance between the back of the oven and the wall should be at least 4-5 cm.

Finishing

As soon as the stove is mounted, we begin to brick it. An important point - you cannot build a firebox close to the walls of the fireplace - they must be very tightly connected to the load-bearing wall, and the joints at the joints must be putty. Brick walls are erected above the firebox, in about two bricks, after which the upper U-shaped cast iron plate is laid, attached to glue or mastic. We proceed to the next stage of work.

Hood

Chimneys in their design are of several types: brick and stainless steel. Let's take a closer look at each of them

  • Brick. Creates a beautiful picture, but has a number of serious disadvantages. Firstly, it makes the load on the foundation and floors heavier, which complicates the installation on the upper floors and in rooms where an additional margin of safety was not provided for during the design. Secondly, it requires additional reinforcement with iron or composite reinforcement and wall fasteners during construction. Thirdly, the service life of such a system is a maximum of 10 years, even with proper and timely maintenance. This is due to the formation of condensation, the need to provide perfectly flat walls, as well as additional insulation. Thus, an already expensive system requires additional costs.

Image

Galvanized. Pipes for such a system for removing smoke and combustion products have different diameters, lengths and low weight. This allows you to install a fireplace in almost any room and at any stage of construction. Service life - at least 20 years. Cons: pipes do not retain heat and require additional thermal insulation

It is important to remember that chimneys are of different types: classic French, for example, has no gas threshold, has a simple design and is less economical than the classic English chimney device.

Image
Image

If you wish, you can easily decorate such a chimney, for example, hide it in a box made of non-combustible materials and cover it with tiles or artificial stone.

Image
Image

After completing the installation of the chimney, you can start cladding the walls of the fireplace with porcelain stoneware or artificial stone, depending on your preference and the general concept of interior design.

Image
Image

Checking the correctness of work

Before the test start of the fireplace, you need to open the windows and provide a draft, since the paint will burn off on the painted parts of the firebox. If the smoke, instead of going out into the chimney, falls into the room, it is necessary to check the flow of air into the furnace and make sure that the seams at the joints of the chimney pipes are tight.

Common mistakes and how to avoid them

One of the main mistakes is the lack of a clear distinction between the types of equipment, its purpose, technical characteristics and functionality. Prepare in advance a list of examples of what your future fireplace is. Write down the essential functions and characteristics that it should have - this will save money and nerves when communicating with company managers. And the further process of operation will be comfortable.

Miscalculations when buying. A fireplace is an expensive project. Do not try to save money on trifles, trust the professionals in the selection of equipment, and carry out the installation work yourself.

Structural miscalculations. We talked about them at the very beginning. Even if you decide to develop a fireplace project yourself: from the power of the ventilation system of the room to the air supply system to the fireplace stove, it is still strongly recommended to entrust this work to professionals.

The cost

The average cost of making a brick fireplace with your own hands is about 30,000 rubles. If you involve outside workers, be prepared to add at least another 45,000 rubles to this amount. On average, the estimate of the work will be: 75,000 rubles + the cost of the project, on which, as we found out above, it is better not to save money.

Image
Image

The option with a finished cast-iron firebox and its installation will cost, on average, 80,000 rubles. The price will depend on the selected firebox model. Installation work will cost about 45,000 rubles, do not forget to add the cost of the project here.

We recommend purchasing cast iron furnaces only from trusted manufacturers, the most popular in the Russian market at the moment are the furnaces of the following companies: Chamane, Alfa, Snip, Bullerjan, Solo. These manufacturers provide models that can be installed both on a concrete slab and on a porcelain stoneware base.
