Everyone dreamed of having their own fireplace, and, like various characters from the books, spend quiet evenings watching the fire. But not everyone has the opportunity to install a real fireplace, especially in ordinary city apartments. However, do not be upset, it is for this purpose that electric fireplaces have long appeared on the market and are in demand.
An electric fireplace is a simple but interesting thing. It can easily replace a classic fireplace, and most importantly, it can be easily installed in an apartment.
At the same time, you do not need to make a hood, a woodpile and spend money on firewood or coal. And it is easier to dismantle.
To properly install an electric fireplace, it is enough to follow four simple rules:
- The first thing to remember is access to an outlet. So that the installation of an electric fireplace does not become a headache for you, it is better to immediately determine the place where access to the outlet will be free and you do not have to pull extension cords (the visibility of the wires can spoil the whole effect), or make holes in the wall for an additional outlet.
- Consider windows, lamps, and other light sources. Excessive light exposure to an electric fireplace can impair the quality of the fire glow. In other words, a fireplace flame can become dull and lose all its beauty.
- It is not recommended to install an electric fireplace under the TV. In addition to the aesthetic function, the electric fireplace has some of the properties of heating appliances. The heat it emits when exposed to close proximity for a long time can negatively affect other electronics in the home.
- Be careful about the stability of the fireplace. It should stand firmly on the floor or be securely attached to a wall. Any fall can lead to damage to an expensive item.
As you can see, there are no special rules for installing an electric fireplace. And the main role here can be played only by the dimensions of the electric fireplace and the area of free space. There are many different electric fireplaces on the market.
Classification of fireplaces by type of installation
Let's analyze the main types of fireplaces, classify them by the type of installation:
Most often they look like small metal stoves, with legs and a decorative door. However, there are other types of outdoor fireplaces. For example, they can be made in the form of a round metal barrel without legs, in the form of a horizontal cylinder or rectangle, and on top, have a cut, where the decorative flame is located. There are many options for such an electric fireplace, it all depends on how much you are willing to spend on the design.
In terms of installation, a floor-standing electric fireplace is the simplest. It can fit perfectly both against the wall and in the middle of the room (depending on the design). It is also easy to transport.
This type of electric fireplace can be called classic. The side fireplace most accurately imitates real fireplaces, the same ones that we are used to seeing in the movies, in the photo of old houses of the 19th century. A distinctive feature of the attached electric fireplaces is their design. Or rather, the cladding around the hearth. Cladding, as a rule, is made of decorative stone, which gives a wide field for creativity. In addition, such an electric fireplace can be supplemented with an upper shelf, on which various decorative items can be located, emphasizing the design of the fireplace and the room.
Stopping your choice on an attached electric fireplace, it is worth deciding exactly where it will stand. The attached electric fireplace is often massive and is located against the wall. For this reason, it may be difficult to find a place for an attached electric fireplace, if suddenly you want to radically change the interior in the room.
Wall-mounted or mounted electric fireplaces are great for small spaces. They are narrow and do not take up space on the floor. Wall-mounted electric fireplaces are usually mounted at a height of about one meter from the floor. The design of wall-mounted fireplaces is more sophisticated. Most often made in the style of "minimalism" or "hi-tech". There are other options, with a more classic design.
When installing wall-mounted electric fireplaces, you should carefully consider the issue of fastening. The weight of fireplaces varies from 10 to 25 kg. It is necessary to fasten such a structure as firmly as possible. It is best to use anchor bolts, because this is the most reliable type of fastening. Screws with a large diameter dowel and the largest possible length, relative to the thickness of the walls, are also suitable.
The built-in type of electric fireplaces is less common, but such a fireplace attracts more attention. The built-in fireplace looks impressive, because it seems to be embedded in the wall, which makes it an integral part of the whole house. Built-in electric fireplaces are of different types. This can be a deep niche in the wall with an open hearth where you can reach out. Alternatively, the hearth of the fireplace can be covered with glass, thus forming an almost smooth surface with the wall. It can have a frame that distinguishes it on the wall (like a hanging fireplace), but at the same time with a deeper hearth extending into the wall.
The built-in electric fireplace is the most difficult to install.
The first way is to make a niche directly in the wall itself. Here the main problem may be the thickness of the wall, it may not be enough. The second thing to remember is whether the wall is load-bearing. If yes, then it is strongly not recommended to violate the integrity of the wall.
The easiest option is to build up the wall using drywall or aerated concrete blocks, after leaving a place for a built-in fireplace. However, this method "steals" space and is only suitable for large rooms.
And of course, do not forget to leave free access to the electric fireplace. Otherwise, in the event of a breakdown of the electric fireplace, you will have to spoil the wall.
The most interesting and unusual type of electric fireplaces. It is an independent structure, characterized by the fact that there is access to the hearth from all sides. The island electric fireplace is suitable only for very large rooms and is the center of the entire composition. This is the first thing that catches your eye when entering a room, which means that it dictates the direction of the interior.
An island electric fireplace can be of various shapes: round, triangular, square, rectangular. In the price category, the island type of electric fireplaces is the most expensive. However, its appearance, the impression it makes, easily pays for all investments.
There are no special problems with the installation of such a fireplace. The main thing is to find the right place where the island electric fireplace will not interfere. Difficulty may arise with the transportation of the electric fireplace. They are usually very massive. And it is also necessary to think carefully about how to hide the wires, because most often island electric fireplaces are placed in the center of the room.
Choosing the location of the fireplace
Where is the best place to place the fireplace? In fact, there are no special rules here. Electric fireplaces can be found in any room. The usual option is to locate the electric fireplace in the hall where people most often gather. This helps create a friendly environment. A good solution for the hall would be to place an electric fireplace directly under the TV, it is this place that is most often the center of the room.
The second most popular place where a fireplace is located is the bedroom. In the bedroom, an electric fireplace will help create a cozy and relaxing atmosphere. You can position the fireplace opposite the bed. This will help calm your nerves and relax after a hard day. The wall-mounted electric fireplace can be placed directly at the head of the bed, thanks to which it will be possible to enjoy the sound of the flame.
Style directions in design
Modern electric fireplaces are not limited in design. There are a lot of beautiful models, made in classic or modern styles. Both simple models of floor fireplaces and complex architectural designs of side fireplaces are presented on the market. The design of side fireplaces can be completely taken under your control. You can choose the facing stone, the color and material of the shelf, all the accessories yourself.
In addition, in all electric fireplaces, the hearth itself may have its own design. Here you can choose from almost any material, from wood to marble.
