A wooden house is a structure that keeps warm in itself, even in winter. But many owners want to equip in the room, in addition to the main one, an additional heating system in the form of a fireplace. To implement it, you will need not only the ability to handle various construction tools and materials, but also observe fire safety techniques.

Fireplace models

After deciding to start installing the fireplace, you need to decide on the model. You can choose based on three important points:

  1. Design features.
  2. Type of firebox.
  3. The material from which the fireplace is made.

By design features, we can distinguish products that are installed in the corner of the room, straight wall and insulated. The type of firebox depends on the raw materials used. This can be coal or wood, biofuels, gas and electricity.

The classic option is to install a metal fireplace. This product can be built into literally any surface and provide an impressive appearance to a room in a wooden house for guests.

You can also create a fireplace out of bricks, but to implement this project you will need to create a separate foundation. Particular attention should be paid to the firebox, which is laid out from a refractory building material.

Bio fireplaces and electric models are usually made of metal. The use of fireproof glass is allowed, which gives the product a more original appearance.

Special requirements for installation in a wooden house

In order to install an already purchased fireplace, you will need to follow fire safety techniques. Construction specialists assure that a competently executed hearth will allow the owner to get only pleasure from using it and no problems.

If the owner of the log house decides to create a brick version of the fireplace, then he will have to follow simple but important rules:

  1. After the construction of the log house, at least a year must pass.
  2. A fire extinguisher must be placed in the room, preferably near the hearth.
  3. In order to avoid trouble during the natural shrinkage of the structure, you need to install the fireplace three years after the date of construction.
  4. The firebox should be equipped with a removable screen.
  5. An open firebox cannot be installed on the top floor of a building or in the attic.
  6. There should be no fabric products, upholstered furniture and other flammable items near the hearth.
  7. Installation of a brick fireplace on a wooden floor is prohibited.
  8. Each wooden structure near the wood-burning fireplace is insulated to prevent sparks and overheating.
  9. The foundation for the fireplace should be created isolated from the foundation of the building itself.
  10. It is imperative to build a chimney.

Ways to protect wood from fire

With your own hands, you can create additional protection for wooden surfaces in the immediate vicinity of the hearth from the effects of fire. This work should only be done if the owner of the wooden house decided to install a brick hearth. The main goals of wood protection are to protect wood from sparks or burning scales and neutralize the effect of heat.

The following should be used as optimal building elements:

  1. Basalt slabs.
  2. Brick. This implies laying part of the wall and floor where the fireplace will stand with this material.
  3. Special mineral sealant in the form of sheets.
  4. Non-combustible seals in rolls.

An alternative option is to clad part of the surface in front of the fireplace or the wall in stainless steel.

Installation instructions

After the place has been selected, the fire safety conditions have been correctly fulfilled and the fireplace model has been selected, it is necessary to study the sequence of work on the installation of the hearth. Experienced wizards reduce the entire installation process to several stages:

  1. Installation of the foundation.
  2. Wall treatment.
  3. Assembling the fireplace.
  4. Chimney installation.
  5. Protecting the floor from heat and fire.

If the home owner does not plan to hire a group of workers, then he should know the intricacies of each stage.

Foundation installation

A separate base is created for the future fireplace. If the wooden house has not yet been built, then ideally this place should be planned in advance. In the case of the installation of the foundation after the construction of the building, part of the floor covering in the selected location is dismantled.

A hole is dug, the depth of which should be the point of freezing of the soil in winter. At its bottom, a stone, the remains of broken bricks or ordinary construction medium-sized crushed stone is poured. The formwork should protrude at least 10 cm above the floor surface.

When pouring the solution, be sure to install the fittings. The horizontal upper surface is leveled, left to harden, and then checked with a level. It is necessary to create a perfectly flat base.

Wall treatment

During the solidification of the foundation, work can be carried out to equip the walls. In this case, special thermal insulation is used. It is desirable to create a multi-layer protection.

Before starting work, the territory is necessarily measured and marked. Approximately 75 cm should be retreated from the fireplace itself, and this surface is insulated. A metal profile is selected as a fastener for insulation sheets. You can hide building material by means of plasterboard sheets.

The slots are sealed with a special tape with a foil base. If possible, then you can simply brick this place.

Assembling the fireplace

In addition to the refractory brick itself, you will need dampers, grates and a door (preferably with glass).

Brick laying is performed strictly according to the previously selected scheme. It is recommended to use a special solution that is resistant to fire and high temperatures.

The first and subsequent rows after installation are checked with a level. Gradually, during masonry, previously purchased additional elements are installed.

It is recommended to create a gap between the masonry and the insulation sheets of at least 20 cm.

Chimney installation

In a wooden house, a bend is created in two different ways:

  • with output to the outside;
  • inside with a roof outlet.

Special difficulty lies in wait for the wizard when mounting the output to the outside. In this case, it is important to leave some space between the ceilings and the chimney, which should not be less than 15 cm. A pipe is installed outside the wall, and the joints are insulated.

Protecting the floor from heat and fire

It is recommended to lay a facing material on the floor around the fireplace insert that does not burn and does not get very hot. The space around the fireplace should cover about 1.5 meters in all directions. The most aesthetically pleasing is the laying of ceramic tiles, marble or granite.

Design advice

A cast iron fireplace or brick hearth must harmoniously fit into a wooden house. Therefore, the owners are advised to turn to the services of craftsmen and specialists in design and construction. In order to protect yourself from various kinds of problems, you should forget about erecting a fireplace in a wooden building on your own. The owner is entrusted with a more pleasant role - the choice of accessories and design of the future hearth. If you still really want to work, then you can make the cladding.
