Features and Benefits
The most demanded piece of furniture today is a wardrobe. A good cabinet or built-in wardrobe is an excellent choice for creating a convenient storage system. The main advantage of a sliding wardrobe in comparison with an ordinary wardrobe is the ability to save precious square meters, and even centimeters, to rationally place the maximum number of things in a small area.
The design of any cabinet model consists of the following elements:
- hulls from side and rear walls, roof and floor;
- coupe systems from top and bottom guides, roller mechanisms, vertical and horizontal profiles and doors;
- internal filling.
When purchasing a wardrobe, you need to think about its dimensions, the number of doors and internal distribution. If the length and height of the structure will depend mainly on the size of the room or niche, then depth planning should be taken into account more carefully.
The maximum and minimum depth of the hull is essentially unlimited and depends on various points, for example, on what kind of filling will be used. When planning the inner clothes rail, you need to rely on a cabinet depth of at least 55-60 cm, given that the sliding mechanism takes up about 8-10 cm of space.
A depth of less than 50 cm will lead to the crawling of the sleeves of fur coats and down jackets outside the closet, damage to the buttons on the sleeves of jackets due to falling into the gaps of the sliding system, and the need to constantly tuck clothes into the depths of the closet by hand. Therefore, for free movement of doors, if space permits, it is better to design the depth of the wardrobe on the hangers 70-80 cm.
The maximum compartment depth can be different, up to 90-100 cm. But before ordering such a depth, you need to think about the convenience of finding things in the depths of the shelves of such a cabinet, especially in its mezzanine part. You will have to reach for things on shelves 1 meter deep, balancing perilously on a stepladder.
When laying a depth of 80 cm, you need to figure out whether it will be optimal, because there will be no order on the half-empty shelves. The working depth of the structure minus the guides will turn out to be 70 cm, and the standard filling depth in the form of a basket, hanger-trouser, tie and shoe rack is 500 mm, as a result, 20-25 cm of space will not be used effectively.
Narrow hallways make it impossible to use a wardrobe with a depth of more than 60 cm; such a product will block the passage. A depth of less than 40-45 cm is impractical, minus the sliding mechanism, there will be a useful depth of shelves of only 30-35 cm. A wardrobe with a small depth will lose its effectiveness.
By sensibly planning the space, the designers offer a cabinet design with variable depth. The model with a deep wardrobe area, a transitional section for dishes and a shallow section for books, while saving space, retains its functionality.
This parameter is selected based on the height of the ceiling and the length of the chipboard panel, which is usually 278 cm.Most often, they are limited to a height of 270 cm.If you need a cabinet with a height of over 270 cm and far beyond 300 cm, then you can build a mezzanine extension with your own system of guides and compartment doors.
If an additional sliding system is not installed, they are limited to doors to the full height, up to 400 cm, provided that the door is broken into fragments from different materials. The sides will be connected to the ceiling with a joint.
The length determines the number and width of the doors. The cabinet lengths can be any, it is important that there are no problems during the installation of the product. The optimal door width is 70-90 cm, but they can be made narrower or wider. However, over time, skewing of very wide, more than 1 meter, doors may occur. Narrow doors are quite light and unstable and may fall out of the bottom rail.
It is best to distribute the interior space based on the number and size of doors. Each door provides convenient access to a separate section, into which the volume of the cabinet is delimited with the help of partitions. Manufacturers offer door widths from 500 mm to 800 mm as standard. The space inside the cabinet is traditionally divided into three zones:
- top, for storing seasonal clothes and items that are not needed at the moment;
- medium, for placing clothes, linen, ties, trousers and drawers for small things and other things on hangers;
- bottom, for storing shoes.
It is necessary to think over which side and at what height it is better to place the barbells for outerwear on the hangers. If the compartment stands in the hallway, then it is more convenient to fix the barbell closer to the exit, if the product will stand in the bedroom, the bar can be mounted in the center.
For jackets, shirts and trousers folded in half, a height of 1100 mm is sufficient. At a height of 1400 mm, coats and raincoats of regular length can be hung. If there are floor-length dresses, then it is better to hang them at a height of 1700 mm. Sometimes the bar is placed at a height of 1800 mm and a removable shelf is installed below at a distance of 400 mm from the floor. They put shoes at the bottom, and, if necessary, remove the shelf.
A long wardrobe can accommodate several compartments with bars at different heights. For under-ceiling storage, it is very convenient to use a pantograph, which is a mechanism with a long handle attached to the back or sidewalls of the section. Expensive pantographs are equipped with a control panel. A shallow closet accommodates an end bar with a sliding mechanism located perpendicular to the door.
In the hallway, above the outerwear, you need to arrange shelves for hats. For storing long items, such as an artificial Christmas tree or skis, shelves with a height of 400 mm can be made at the very top.
The 900 mm space can be divided into two 450 mm sections. Shelf heights vary from 300 mm to 500 mm. Linen drawers should be made with a depth of 200 mm to 400 mm, understanding that the deeper the drawer, the harder it will be to pull it out when full. For ventilated storage and quickly finding small items of wardrobe and linen, instead of drawers, it is more convenient to use mesh pull-out baskets.
It's a good idea to provide niches for suitcases, a stepladder, and a built-in ironing board. It is imperative to give a small margin in size so that any item can be easily taken.
Separately, it is worth dwelling on the option of filling the wardrobe, which contains a hard-to-reach deep corner zone. A good way to store it properly and be easily accessible is to install several hanger bars in the center of the corner space. There are options for placement in the corner of the shelving system.
The inner filling will certainly add convenience and functionality. Do not forget that the sliding wardrobe is also an interior decoration, therefore it is important that its design fits well with the style solution of any room, reflects the taste of the home owner.
The entrance hall is the room from which the acquaintance with the whole apartment begins, therefore the appearance of the cabinet and the order in the hallway can characterize the habits of the owners of the home. In a spacious hallway, it is better to mount the most capacious wardrobe that can accommodate the belongings of all family members, then in other rooms a wardrobe may not be needed.
The compartment doors in the hallway must be decorated with full-length mirrors.Mirrors look great in a large room and visually expand the space of a small narrow hallway. Small lamps built into the upper part provide additional illumination and add drama to the design of the sliding doors.
If you plan to install a cabinet in the living room, it should become a key piece of furniture. For the facade, you can use non-standard materials with a variety of glossy, mirror and corrugated surfaces, combined with high-tech, minimalism and modern styles. You can decorate the doors with stained glass windows and spectacular wallpaper.
Radio and television equipment can be located behind decorative doors or on partially open shelves. It is permissible to place photo frames, figurines and books on open shelves. Inside can be hidden a safe with documents, a bar with drinks and a built-in small refrigerator.
When combining several rooms in a studio apartment, a long modern wardrobe can be used as an excellent zoning partition that solves the problem of placing a storage system in a small area.
An interesting solution to the living room, no doubt, will be a structure with a radius arrangement of the facade. Cabinets using a variety of non-standard convex and concave doors, despite their high cost, are popular and require the selection of appropriate furniture in the living room.
In the bedroom, where the interior is supposed to serve as a quiet rest, the wardrobe should not contrast with the furnishings. For door decoration, it is possible to use environmentally friendly materials: leather, bamboo or rattan. The surface of the facade can be monochromatic glossy or matte. There are projects that involve placement in the entire wall and full color fusion with the decoration of the bedroom.
Sliding doors must conceal the fully functional contents of the interior. When organizing the interior space, one should not forget about spacious shelves for storing a supply of bed linen, pillows and blankets. Allocate storage space for your iron and ironing board.
LED lighting on the top of the doors and contour lighting on the end of the shelves will not only add convenience and practicality to the wardrobe, but will also add an additional element of comfort to the design of the bedroom.
A sliding wardrobe in a children's room must be made of high-quality, environmentally friendly materials that do not emit harmful substances. It is best to provide a good roomy model that will serve the child for many years. If it is impossible to place other furniture, a small retractable work table can be provided behind the doors.
As the child grows, the functionality of the shelves will change, school textbooks and notebooks will be placed instead of toys. Then the nursery will look spacious and neat. For decoration, it is advisable to use materials in a beautiful color using photo facades of various themes or colorful stained-glass windows.
How to choose
A wide range of models are offered today. It is very important to decide on the material from which the cabinet should be made. Modern designs are made from natural materials, chipboard and MDF.
Particleboards, often used in furniture production, are obtained by hot pressing wood chips with formaldehyde resin binders. The material is budget-friendly, durable and suitable for long-term use. Chipboard is covered with a laminated film with textures imitating different types of natural wood.
The disadvantage of laminated chipboard is the impossibility of using it for the manufacture of curved surfaces. Usually chipboard is used to make good quality and affordable classic furniture models.
MDF is a material obtained by dry pressing at a high temperature of fine wood chips using binder urea resins.The quality and environmental friendliness of MDF are comparable to those of wood. MDF is characterized by flexibility in work, which allows you to create the most original cabinet models.
Before purchasing, you need to determine the installation site and make an approximate plan of the room with accurate measurements and the location of the cabinet relative to other furniture. It is necessary to consider the location of the sockets, the width of the window sill, pipes or batteries. If there is a doorway nearby, pay attention to the possibility of free functioning of the door.
Interesting solutions in interior design
Furniture designers offer many unusual design solutions for wardrobes. For example, models with combined facades, in which one of the doors is made of mirrored glass, and the other is made of MDF. Models with a combination of several materials: bamboo, shiny plastic, photographs embody the most daring ideas of the artist and harmonize well with the non-standard interior.
Designs of elite models of sliding wardrobes, made to order or ready-made, are made only of natural wood: pine, oak and ash. Cabinets with up to five doors are distinguished by high-quality fittings and thoughtfulness of internal filling. The modular system allows you to combine and swap modules at the discretion of the owner.
