Double-leaf interior doors look great and transform an ordinary room into a sophisticated hall or living room. Their installation does not require special costs, and the advantages of their use are compensated for by the few difficulties that arise in the selection and installation process.

What it is?

In the design of such doors, there are two leaves in one door frame. This option is convenient for doorways, the width of which is more than one meter, and therefore it is impossible to close them with a single door leaf. Most often, such internal openings are left for the entrance to the hall or the living room in order to emphasize the ceremonial purpose of the room, therefore, special attractiveness and full compliance with the general stylistic solution of the interior are required from double doors.

Double-leaf doors have another name. They are called double-sided due to the fact that in sliding structures, for example, in compartment doors, there are no sashes in the usual sense of the word, they open due to sliding in guides fixed to the floor.

Image
Image

An interesting fact is that almost any door leaf can be installed as double.

In this case, the combination options can be very diverse:

  • Double canvases of the same size and symmetrical pattern;
  • Identical in size, but asymmetrical canvases, made in the same color scheme;
  • Door panels mirrored in the pattern;
  • One of the canvases can be much wider than the other, the ratio is 1 to 4, while both leaves are identical in design and color.

In the case of using canvases of different widths, one of them (usually the one that is narrower) is usually fixed in the opening, opening only if necessary. This is done due to the crossbars, which do not allow the narrow sash to swing open when the wide half of the door is opened.

Double-leaf doors can be divided into several types depending on the type of opening:

  • Swing doorsthat need a lot of free space to open. Such doors look very pompous, decorating the entrance to a large room. Among them are arched doors that require high ceilings and are especially aristocratic.
  • Slidingopening the passage horizontally thanks to sliding. Such designs are ideal for small-sized apartments, without using the nearby space and moving only along the supporting rail, which is similar to a rail with grooves. There are sliding doors, the movement of which occurs along the surface of the walls and cassette doors, also called compartment doors, which, when opened, “hide” inside the wall partition. Shoji doors, which are the Japanese variation of sliding doors, have recently become popular.

  • Pendulum doorsthat can open in both directions: into the inside of the room, and out. Most often, they are installed in office or retail premises that have a significant amount of space required for the free movement of such structures.
  • Folding or accordion doors, which are two pairs of narrow single-leaf canvases, connected to each other by means of hinges. They are attached to the door frame on hinges; when a pair of doors are opened, they move in opposite directions.

  • Another popular type of double leaf door is patio doors … These are two glass single-floor sliding doors, one of which is installed on rollers running parallel to a fixed panel of the same shape. Such structures are installed as an exit to a terrace or loggia.
  • Doors "compact" are also bivalve. This is an Italian version, which is becoming popular due to the ease of opening: when open, the sashes fold to one side and press against the wall surface, absolutely not taking up unnecessary space.

Often they are combined by installing a one and a half set in a large doorway: a "compact" door and a small swing door.

Dimensions (edit)

Double-leaf doors are completed from canvases that are available in the salons.

Most manufacturing firms are guided by the standard dimensions for doors established by GOST, but if you wish, you can find a factory that makes door leaves to order. Some firms can perform similar work and according to the individual project of the buyer.

The standard width is 400mm, 550mm, 600mm, 700mm, 800mm, 900mm, 1100mm. There are manufacturers, for example, "Dverona", "Zodchiy", which produce doors of any width with a difference of 10 mm.

The height can be either 2000 mm, which is common for most apartments, and 2300 mm, which is convenient for steel apartments or houses with high ceilings. For arched structures or doors with a transom, a door leaf of non-standard height can be made with a step of 10 mm or 50 mm.

Asymmetric installation options are usually selected based on the size of the box and the wishes of the buyer. Such doors can consist of a one-and-a-half main leaf and a half additional leaf, the size of which can be, for example, 800 mm to 400 mm.

Materials (edit)

The double-leaf doors that exist today have a significant difference in materials of manufacture. It can be a natural wood called solid wood or its substitutes. They also produce plastic and glass models. For entrance doors, metal frames are used, ennobled with wood strips, tempered glass inserts or plastic.

Wood

Interior doors are made of thin boards and beams of different price categories:

  • Conifers: pine, larch or cedar;
  • Hardwood: oak, beech, elm, walnut or teak;
  • Exotic wood varieties: mahogany, wenge, rosewood or Karelian birch.

Such products are called solid wood doors, they are heavy and very durable, providing good sound insulation and privacy, respectively, the cost of such doors is very high.

The surface treatment of wooden doors is carried out in several stages:

  • Initially, a primer is applied, usually in at least two coats to achieve the desired shade of the wood;
  • The two-component varnish, which has protective and decorative functions, fixes the painting.

Very often, to reduce the cost of a product, wood parts are combined with lightweight materials: MDF, fiberboard or chipboard. In this case, the door frame is made of a spliced beam, on which a layer of MDF or other material is attached. To increase the service life, the combined doors are laminated. This process consists of applying a layer of PVC film to protect porous surfaces from moisture and dirt.

Typically, such structures are lightweight, because they are hollow inside or filled with various types of filler:

  • Corrugated cardboard with a honeycomb structure;
  • Wooden bars;
  • Chipboard.

To make the appearance of the combined door more attractive, the surface is covered with a material such as natural veneer, which is a thin (2-3 mm) cut of valuable natural wood. The veneer has all the features of natural wood, the corresponding structure and color, indistinguishable from solid wood. It is fixed to the surface of the door leaf with wood glue.

When creating door panels, plastic panels, called eco-veneers, are often used recently, with which bases made of comparatively inexpensive wood are faced. At the same time, the front surface of such panels is made with imitation of wood texture, moreover, to enhance the effect, it is covered with a polypropylene film of the corresponding pattern. Such a coating is called Cilplex, in addition to its aesthetic functions, it increases the service life of the door leaf and makes it easier to maintain.

Plastic

Double-leaf doors can also be made of modern materials such as PVC. Plastic door leaves are not afraid of increased humidity. Due to this property, they are used for swimming pools, exits to balconies and bathrooms, where there is often high humidity and there is a risk of condensation on the surface of the door. PVC structures are very durable, the service life of individual items can reach forty years.

For transitions to cool rooms, special insulated plastic doors are made.

Budget plastic canvases are panel-type, in this case they are performed with imitation of panels to create a more interesting appearance or with polycarbonate glass inserts. More expensive options have real paneled inserts, in which various glasses are usually inserted as decoration. It can be matte triplex, transparent opaque or multi-colored stained glass.

Glass

For modifications such as patio doors or classic sliding interior doors, various types of impact-resistant glass are used:

  • Stemalit, colored glass, which is first dyed and then heated, due to which the material receives additional strength, and the colors become brighter;
  • Satin, which is also tempered glass, also has a matte shade, very often decorated with drawings in sandblasting technique;
  • Activate, which is a particularly durable glass, transparent, as it undergoes a bleaching procedure;
  • Triplex, called laminated glass, because it has a film sandwiched between two glass layers, thanks to which such glass, even if broken, never falls into pieces.

Sometimes glass doors are light panels, in which the built-in LED-backlighting, mounted at the manufacturing stage, creates a special appeal. This lighting transforms the door into a work of art that decorates the room and amazes guests.

By the type of fastening, double-sided glass doors can be:

  • Frameless, which are secured thanks to a system of cables and fittings. Such designs look especially airy and attractive;
  • Anchored in a wooden door frame or in a metal frame made of light aluminum with various spraying.

In some cases, the door leaf can be made of a mirror, but this is quite rare when decorating interior doors due to the low strength of the mirror coating.

Color solutions

There is an unspoken design rule, according to which the color of the door leaf is matched to the design of the room, and not vice versa. That is, the floor, furniture and wall covering are selected first, and only then the doors. The only exception to this rule are stained glass doors due to their unique color scheme.

An interesting nuance is the fact that the door leaf usually delimits two rooms and must "fit" into the interior of both. The classic option in this case is a combination of door color and floor covering.

Since the laminate, linoleum or parquet is made of wood or the color of wood, the door covering of various shades is the most common among interior doors.

The most popular are the following colors:

  • Oak, which is presented in numerous modifications:

    • ivory white oak;
    • bog oak of a brownish-earthy color, having a somewhat gloomy, but very noble shade;

  • bog oak with a baked milk patina, with longitudinal veins of a creamy shade, refreshing the palette;
  • oak "white patina" with a shade of gray;
  • smoky oak, which shows the pattern of wood against a dark gray background in particular relief;
  • meling oak, which has a grayish-ash tint;
  • wenge oak, also called chocolate for the predominant shade of dark chocolate;
  • natural oak with a golden honey color.

  • Nut, which also has many popular tints:

    • Milanese walnut, which has the usual light golden color;
    • light walnut, in the shade of which there are reddish tones;
    • dark walnut, the color of which is close to the traditional brown;
    • nougat, or meling, which looks like amber;
    • walnut gold, light brown with golden lines.

  • Wenge, a traditional dark chocolate color with black veins and wenge meling, which has a slightly lightened background with a lighter pattern;
  • Ash, represented by such varieties:

    • traditional ash, which has a light brown hue;
    • Sherwood ash, golden olive;
    • ash cappuccino, reminiscent of the color of the coffee drink of the same name;
    • gray, or ash ash;
    • pearl or bleached ash.

  • Rosewoodwhose color varies between pinkish brown and brownish red;
  • Cherrywhich comes in a traditional red-brown color;
  • Red tree, which includes such varieties of trees as mahogany, red sandalwood and paduk, which have wood of noble red-brown tones;
  • Sapele, the color of which is close to the mahogany varieties, but with a more pronounced purple hue.

In cases where interior doors are made of plastic, their color is most often white.

Glass door panels can be stained glass or plain. When stained-glass windows are used, be it a classic stained-glass window in the Tiffany style, fusing or sandblasting with lacquer tinting, the colors of the door are consistent with the overall style of the room. Usually, stained glass doors act as a solo in the interior, which is selected precisely taking into account the color and pattern of the glass.

Modern design

Double doors are used in various premises, most often the so-called "front" doors, designed to enter the living room. Another application is their use as interior partitions. Such zoning of the room introduces a certain elegance and creates functional advantages, since it allows only one of the partitions to be opened for daily use.

Interior double doors can be made from a variety of materials, the choice of which mainly depends on the homeowner and on what type of material is preferable for a given interior design. The appearance of such a door usually depends on its design features, for which the design of the canvas itself is already selected. In general, the variety of door leaf designs ranges from traditional to ultra-modern design ideas.

Swing doors are most convenient to adapt to traditional interiors. They look familiar, and therefore they fit especially well into the classic options for window design, furniture arrangement and the choice of lamps. In most cases, two halves of the door are installed, having a completely symmetrical pattern and size. In especially pompous rooms, for example, decorated in the styles of Art Nouveau, Baroque, Victorian classicism, paneled two-door structures made of solid wood with overlaid patterns or glass inserts are installed.

Stained glass is often used as inserts, refined and luxurious. To enhance the impression, a semicircular arch decorated with the same glass elements is mounted above the door frame. Most often, the color of the door leaf and fittings echoes the shades present in the furniture.

In interiors decorated in Art Nouveau, Vintage or Classicism styles, you can install door panels of the same size and shade, having asymmetrical abstract glass inserts or door panels with a mirror layout of the pattern. Side doors made of solid wood or MDF look interesting in such rooms, having as decoration thin glass strips embedded between wooden inserts. The so-called "Italian" compact doors will also look stylish and fresh, which, moreover, save space due to the peculiarities of their design.

Sliding doors fit perfectly into any modern style: techno. hi-tech, loft or gothic. At the same time, they take up much less space when opening, although, admittedly, they do not allow furniture to be installed close to the walls, near which the door leaves move. The exception is cassette doors, which, when opened, "go" into the wall and are the most practical for modern small apartments.

In the case when the owner of the premises wants to carry out zoning without losing natural light, you can use a glass door structure made of impact-resistant triplex or stained glass.

Frameless suspended glass doors will enhance the sense of free space that is characteristic of modern interior designs. Furniture with metal legs and lamps of futuristic shapes can emphasize such doors.

Patio doors, which are glass sliding doors, also work especially well in modern, stylish interiors. They are usually placed as an exit to a terrace, loggia or balcony, which in this case look like a continuation of the living room due to the transparency of the door structure.

Doors-screens, called "shoji", harmoniously complement the interior in Japanese or Chinese design. Being essentially a variation of compartment doors, they hide inside the wall, saving space inside small living quarters. The material used as inserts or, in authentic designs, special Japanese paper, is organically combined with curtains and screens in traditional oriental styles.

How to choose the right one?

The choice of double-leaf doors is not as difficult as it might seem at first glance. They are selected at the final stage of the renovation, when the room has already been conceptually decorated and it remains to put the finishing touch on the picture.

Image
Image

When choosing, several points are important:

  • The appearance of canvases, which can be paneled, panel or glass. In all cases, the first thing worth paying attention to is whether the owners like the design, because they will have to use the purchased doors for more than one year.
  • Compliance with the style of the premises. By choosing doors with the correct details and color, you can combine all the elements of the room into a single whole. Conversely, if stylish doors look out of place in the interior, you should not choose them, even if they are very attractive in appearance.
Image
Image
Image
Image
  • The strength of the material. It is important to understand that if the doors are made of solid wood, they are durable and can last for more than one generation. Glass doors can be made of double pane glass, which adds strength to them. MDF and plastic doors are not as strong as natural wood, especially if they are hollow on the inside.
  • Consumer characteristics: color fastness of doors made of natural wood or film coating for structures made of MDF and fiberboard, susceptibility to moisture and warranty periods for this product. It is worth asking the seller about this, familiarizing yourself with the accompanying documentation and asking for reviews on the doors of this brand on the Internet.
  • Compliance with the size of the doorway is an important point of choice. If it turns out that for the sake of the door model you like you will have to expand the doorway, you should carefully weigh the pros and cons.
Image
Image
Image
Image
  • Naturally, the buyer decides to purchase custom-made or ready-made doors. The order allows you to install a non-standard design that turns your doors into a unique element of the interior, but it takes time to manufacture and additional financial costs. Ready-made canvases are cheaper and can be installed immediately after purchase.
  • The difficulty of installing some of the double-leaf door options is also worth assessing in advance. First of all, this applies to cassette models or doors with transoms.
  • The cost of the door is also important. If possible, it is better to compare prices in different salons and online stores, choosing a balance of price and quality.

Beautiful examples in the interior

Doors are not only the entrance to a room, they usually create the first impression and show the individuality of the room.

Image
Image

For example, the interior is stunning with the presence of a double door with white trim and tempered frosted glass inserts. This door provides a bright and eye-catching contrast to the brown-colored walls, but also matches the wide white skirting boards, electrical fittings and furniture in white finishes. Since the door frame and molding above it are also white, they harmoniously combine the doors and the ceiling surface.

The elegant solid glass doors, often referred to as "French" doors, are ideal for patio doors, which serve as an exit from the house to the veranda. They have a noble shade of ivory, which is repeated in the decoration of the unusual round windows, baseboards and delicate floral patterns on the walls. The presence of openwork baguette inserts in the door leaf creates a feeling of airiness and lightness of their design, testifying to the refined taste of the owners.

Luxurious rosewood doors look especially attractive due to the strictly mirrored arrangement of the veneer coating. They bring coziness and elegance to a room decorated in a simple minimalist style. In order to "fit" the natural shades of natural wood into the techno-style, the owner added a soft carpet with a high pile, the color of which echoes the complex tones of rosewood.

The glass sliding door is very stylish. However, this sleek, modern piece of furniture can offer some privacy as well, when it is made from a material painted in dark colors. Such a door will be an excellent addition to a home office or work office, its discreet tones, echoing with the flooring and wall painting, will ensure the cleanliness and simplicity of the interior. Due to the fact that the height of the door leaves slightly exceeds the size of the doorway, the guides along which the door is sliding are not visible, which is undoubtedly an additional plus.

Custom-made custom-designed double-leaf doors can transform a typical room into a medieval castle room. A semicircular arched door frame, canvases made of solid natural wood and painted with a patting effect, discreet panel inserts - all the decorative elements of this door miracle remind of the ancient design traditions. The discreet palette of the room is fully consistent with the neutral color finish of the door leaves.
