What it is?

The abbreviation MDF is an abbreviation for the English name of the material, which literally stands for chipboard. That is, it is an analogue of chipboard, only of a higher quality in terms of its technical characteristics. The raw material for its production is the waste of the woodworking industry - sawdust, small chips. All of these are natural fibers. To connect them, paraffin or lignin is used - harmless binders, so MDF can be used in any living space, the plates are safe for humans and animals, they are considered an environmentally friendly material.

Despite the fact that the technology for manufacturing the plates is the same, there are different types of this material - moisture resistant, which are suitable for rooms with high humidity, laminated with a beautiful coating, so you can choose sheets for any needs.

Characteristics

The properties of the panels may differ slightly depending on their type, however, the characteristics must correspond to certain indicators.

This is regulated by the regulatory documents that manufacturers are guided by

  • In the composition, at least 90% is occupied by sawdust, the rest is made up of fasteners and components that prevent decay.
  • The ultimate strength of the slab is in the range of 17-23 MPa.
  • Allowed up to 10% moisture, but not less than 3%.
  • Density is an important indicator on which the strength of the panel depends. Usually ranges from 600 to 850 kg per cubic meter. You can check how the declared indicators correspond to reality, if it is possible to weigh the slab, and then the resulting mass must be divided by the volume - this is the product of the three dimensions of the panel.
  • Moisture resistance may vary. There are conventional boards and those that have increased resistance to moisture due to the addition of special components during manufacture.
  • To impart fire resistance, additives are used - fire retardants.
  • At the production stage, raw materials are processed so that the finished products become resistant to biological influences - fungi and mold.
  • In addition, MDF may differ in texture, product design, color and other consumer characteristics. When choosing panels, first of all, you need to pay attention to their density, since the strength and durability of products depends on this.

The problem with this material is its fire hazard, since it is based on wood. Although many manufacturers add special components to make the cookers safe, they should still not be placed near an open flame.

Also, when buying, it is better to check the documentation, which confirms that the products really contain components that prevent ignition and the spread of fire.

Wall panels based on MDF may differ in production technology. Solid pressed is obtained from a homogeneous mass that is processed under high pressure and high temperature press. As a result, the finished product looks like a smooth slab. This method allows the creation of panels that provide good thermal insulation and sound insulation.

Laminated wall panels are obtained in a similar way, but additionally covered with a thin film of polymeric materials, which gives the products strength, resistance to mechanical stress and moisture. These slabs come in a wide variety of colors, so it is easy to find an option for any room design.

Special moisture resistant panels for interior decoration are also made by hot pressing, they are washable and can be used in bathrooms or kitchens, while during production the temperature exposure lasts longer, and the wood dust has a denser structure.

Products may differ in the design of the front side. Veneered panels imitate the texture of natural wood, and so precisely that at first glance it is not always possible to distinguish decorative panels from solid wood slabs. Wall paneling panels will be appropriate in a classic interior, as well as carved products with decor. Glossy coated with a polymer film that gives the surface a characteristic shine. They can have a wide variety of colors. Painted ones are produced using a coloring agent, which is applied at the last stage of production and gives the boards the desired shade, as well as smooths out irregularities.

The release forms can be different:

  1. tile products are usually square in shape, attached with glue, can be combined with other materials in the interior;
  2. slats look like slats of different lengths and thicknesses, are attached to the crate and help to visually expand a small space;
  3. sheet are used when it is necessary to quickly complete finishing work in a large room.

Dimensions (edit)

Product dimensions may vary depending on the manufacturer. Large and small slabs, wide panels and narrow slats are available.

However, there are a number of standard indicators:

  • length - 2.6 meters, but the parameters may differ both upward and downward;
  • the width for an ordinary slab is within 90 cm, but some products can be 1.2 meters, and for slats, these indicators are about 15 cm;
  • thickness ranges from 3 mm to 3 cm, and veneered boards can reach 6 cm.

Thickness indicators are directly related to the strength of products. Too thin can break or bend, while thick ones require special fastening. The best option is about 10 mm. Materials that are more than 1.2 cm thick can be used as additional thermal insulation, since wood retains heat well. Also, the coating provides sound insulation in the room.

Color spectrum

Popular are wood-like panels that imitate oak, wenge or other expensive species. Quality products look like solid wood slabs, but they are cheaper and weigh less. They can be used in classic and modern ways, embodying various design ideas. The panel can imitate any pattern and although wood texture is the most popular, there are also stone or leather colors.

On sale you can find colored MDF. They are monochromatic, the palette includes any color from the spectrum, as well as white and black slabs. The surface can be matte or glossy. There are options with a pattern - a pattern or ornament, as well as full-fledged photo printing with the transfer of some complex image.

Design

Decorative slabs can be quite interesting. These are not only monochromatic coatings - glossy or matte, but also various products with patterns that can be combined with each other. Openwork plates with a volumetric carved pattern look especially beautiful in the interior. They can be wall-mounted or used as a lightweight partition to add a touch of elegance to the furnishings.

If the color of the panels has ceased to suit or you want to update them in connection with the upcoming repair, then the products can be painted using varnish or other similar materials. This will not only allow you to change the color, but also hide small roughness or scratches that could appear during operation.

Application

Due to their advantages, the panels are widely used. Wall cladding is the most common use. With these plates, you can create almost any design in a classic or modern style, come up with an original decor. The materials are easy to clean, and the moisture resistant ones can be washed, so the slabs are suitable for finishing in the corridor or hallway.

They can also be used in the kitchen, and not only for wall cladding. A tabletop for a dining table can be made of a plate. If the kitchen furniture is intended for cooking, it is better to choose a sturdier material. MDF is used for the manufacture of furniture facades. During production, the slabs can be shaped into any shape, even curved. An apron made of MDF is an economical solution, it is quickly assembled, looks beautiful, and if necessary, some part can be quickly replaced. But traditional materials, such as ceramic tiles, MDF is inferior in durability, resistance to temperature and moisture, strength.

Some types of material are also suitable for use in the bathroom, at least this is what the manufacturers assure. However, this issue has its own nuances. Under prolonged exposure to high humidity, the plate can change shape, fungi and mold often grow behind the panels, and the products themselves can be damaged due to mechanical influences. Therefore, although they are conditionally suitable for a bathroom, it is better to use it in a room where the owners do not arrange long water procedures for several hours with steaming in hot water.

In the bedroom, you can use panels to trim the area at the head of the bed. It is not necessary to sheathe all the walls with them, but highlighting one part is an interesting solution, especially if the bedroom combines several functions, for example, there is a place for a workspace in it. Using accents in the form of panels will help demarcate the room.

Suitable for MDF and balcony. With the help of plates, you can not only beautifully sheathe the walls, but also additionally insulate, since the material has good thermal insulation. Sheathing can be used for walls and ceilings. In any other room, the ceiling can also be finished with MDF to create a flat surface or a designer multi-level structure.

Regardless of which finish option was chosen, you can do it yourself. Since working with MDF is not too difficult, it is not necessary to resort to the help of a master. The main thing is to prepare all the tools and purchase the material. It is better to purchase it a little with a margin.

Certain tools are required to cut the panels.

You can use one of the following options:

  1. a hacksaw for wood - preferably with the largest teeth, from small ones the material begins to actively crumble;
  2. jigsaw - with its help you can make accurate and even cuts without wasting a lot of time;
  3. the grinder is a noisy tool, when using it, waste remains in the form of sawdust, but in the absence of other options, you can use this one;
  4. A hacksaw for metal is suitable when you need to cut with maximum precision, as it can create very neat cuts.

In order for the MDF coating to last longer, it is recommended to pre-prepare the surface. If there is a layer of plaster on the wall, then it should be removed - it can accumulate moisture over time and worsen the condition of the plates, as well as contribute to the appearance of mold. After cleaning, a flat surface should remain, which is treated with an antiseptic and primed.

Sheet-format panels are attached to the lathing, which can be metal or wood. In the latter case, it is necessary to take care of additional processing of the structure in order to protect it from moisture, fungi and mold.

During installation, one of the methods of joining the panels is used to ensure their snug fit to each other:

  • the most common option is the thorn-groove connection;
  • there can be a groove-groove fastening;
  • for connection, profiles are used that hold the plates together;
  • gluing is only possible on a flat surface and for lightweight panels.

During installation, an additional layer of heat-insulating material can be installed on the battens, if necessary. In the event that wiring will pass under the panels, it is worth using a fire-resistant corrugation to avoid ignition and fire in the event of a short circuit or other malfunctions.

Moisture-resistant panels have their own characteristics - you cannot use nails for their installation, since they violate the integrity of the material and the protective coating, after which moisture can penetrate into the boards. To fix such plates, special glue is used. In this case, a small distance remains between them, which is then coated with a sealant.

How to paint?

In some cases, MDF painting may be required. This is usually done to protect the panels from negative influences, to update fairly old products or change the color of the trim if you want to change the interior. Since the work is carried out indoors, you need to select non-toxic products. It is better to use special compounds designed specifically for working with MDF - they are safe.

Coloring has several advantages at once:

  • with the help of such a coating, you can make the panels more resistant to temperature effects and use them as an apron in the kitchen or in other similar places;
  • special additives: pearls, mother-of-pearl, metallic - this is an opportunity to add uniqueness to the finish;
  • painted products last longer because the paint layer provides additional protection.

For painting, it is better to use polyurethane compounds that do not contain volatile components, are safe, and provide uniform coloring. It is also worth purchasing a primer with the same base.

The work process requires preliminary preparation

  • First, the surface must be carefully sanded - this will help to achieve better adhesion, that is, adhesion of the paint to the wood material. Grinding can be done with a special machine or hand sandpaper.
  • After cleaning, the surface should be degreased using anti-silicone.
  • If the panel has already been used for a long time and roughness, dents, scratches and other noticeable defects have appeared on it, then they need to be putty. You can use an acrylic wood filler and a rubber trowel to apply it.
  • After that, you can use a primer, distributing the product in an even layer over the entire surface. It takes at least 12 hours to dry, then you will need to process the panel again with an emery tool.

After all the preparatory work, you can proceed to painting. A brush, roller or special remote control is suitable for this. The room should be warm enough, but not hot - about 20 degrees. Drying of paint can take from 5 hours to 24 hours, depending on the conditions.

Testimonials

The owners of decorative MDF panels, imitating wood texture, note that these products look presentable and expensive in the interior, they are often mistaken for solid wood slabs. Those who have used monochromatic panels with a glossy finish for decoration have noticed that they practically do not fade in the sun. Moreover, all products of this type do not require complex maintenance and serve for a long time.

It is convenient that, if necessary, part of the casing can be replaced if it is damaged or if you want to change the situation.

Interior options

You can add originality by placing the slabs in an unusual way… When decorating this wall, panels of two sizes were used - rectangular and square, but the chosen method of installation creates a very interesting effect that resembles a mosaic or wicker panel. At the same time, the finished walls look beautiful also due to the imitation of a wood texture. The color of MDF is dark enough, so it is better to combine it with some light details so that the interior looks harmonious. It is not necessary to make the cladding in one layer. Why not go beyond, because you can come up with an original version and add volume. In this interior, more panels were laid on top of the laying imitating boards. With this design, even a wall in restrained colors looks in a new way, it does not need any additional decor

  • You can add variety using different colors … In this option, a unifying direction has been chosen - all panels have a natural wood pattern, but the shades are different. This effect is similar to a mosaic, but it does not seem too intrusive, since a restrained range of brown tones is observed, including the molding, which is used to emphasize the decor. The material here goes well with the stone, which is used to trim the small wall on the side.
  • Panels can only take up part of the space, it is not necessary to decorate the entire room with them. The combination of such products in the lower part with the wallpaper located above is a classic solution. If you like Victorian style and English classics, then you can choose this option and create a discreet but elegant interior using MDF.

Headboard decoration with panels - an interesting idea for decoration. At the same time, the walls can be plain and light, and MDF - in a dark shade, with a wood-like pattern. Such an original accent will make the design unusual. If there is a need to delimit the space in the room, then a similar solution can be used for zoning

Image

MDF is not only wood-like panels, but also plain products with a matte or glossy surfacethat can be made in any color. If you want to create a modern interior style, then you can use bright red slabs of different sizes, placing them on the wall like a mosaic panel. It is better to make such a cladding for one wall, which will be considered an accent, and arrange the rest of the space in more restrained colors so that the situation does not seem overloaded and flashy

Panel apron - it's quite real. To make them last longer and not be afraid of temperature changes, they are processed and varnished, after which you can make any design you like. In this interior, a restrained black and white range has been chosen, combined with a classic setting. The MDF slatted panels form an apron above the work surface and are used as wall cladding in the room

Image
Image

In this living room, the effect is created as if the wall was cracked from impact. The panels were deliberately irregularly shaped and arranged in a special order to give this impression. Since MDF is easy to process, it is not difficult to do this. Perhaps not everyone will like this solution, but this idea looks quite original

Panels can act not only as wall cladding, they are obtained original partitions for space zoning… To prevent the surfaces from merging, you can use plates with different patterns, but at the same time leave one color scheme so that the interior looks uniform. The combination of the two colors creates an original contrast. White slatted panels look impressive, while brown ones make the atmosphere less strict, adding coziness to it. At the same time, the original diagonal arrangement helps to visually expand the space, so this option is also suitable for small rooms. The drawing can be located only on one of the walls, while others can be white with brown facades on the furniture. This combination of colors makes the overall look more interesting
