Features of foam

Polyfoam is of three types:

  • Polystyrene type represented by separate, interconnected balls. It is prone to moisture penetration and contains styrene, which, when burned, releases toxic elements into the environment.
  • Polyethylene option made in the form of translucent flexible sheets, it is durable and absolutely safe. No poisonous and toxic substances are used in its manufacture, therefore this type of foam meets all sanitary and hygienic requirements and is used for the manufacture of ceiling tiles. Despite a number of positive characteristics, the material is quite flammable, which implies a strict ban on its use near sources of open fire.
  • The safest of all types is PVC foam.… In terms of its operational properties, it resembles a polyethylene look, but unlike it, the material is absolutely not flammable, and also has a self-extinguishing effect in the event of an accidental spark or fire. The material corresponds to the B2 fire resistance index. This indicator indicates that thanks to the anti-permeate additives used in the manufacture of plates, the flame goes out on its own within 4 seconds. In the event of a large fire, foam tiles generate eight times less heat than natural wood.

Varieties

The classification of foam ceiling tiles is carried out according to several parameters.

According to the manufacturing method, the products are:

  • injection;
  • extruded;
  • stamped.

Injection models are produced using the technology of thermal sintering of foam plastic, which consists in pouring liquid raw materials into a heated mold, and then baking the material under the action of steam. The thickness of the products reaches 14 mm, the boards are not painted, which is why they are available only in white.

The material is distinguished by a beautiful deep relief, smooth surface, and is a product with an optimal price-quality ratio.

The extruded models are produced using the polystyrene extrusion technique, in which the foam is formed in vacuum. Then a film coating is applied to the workpiece. The tiles have a smooth shiny surface, and also have a large range of models with a huge variety of relief patterns and ornaments. The PVC film applied to the tiles perfectly imitates the pattern of wood fibers, natural stone, fabric, stucco and wood carvings.

The disadvantage of this model is the too noticeable tile seam, high cost, as well as the impossibility of painting the boards in the desired color due to the laminated surface. The advantages include ease of maintenance, a large assortment of colors and textures, long service life and high strength of the material.

Also, models are not prone to yellowness and are able to maintain their original appearance for up to 10 years.

Stamped models are 7-9 mm thick products, they are characterized by flat surfaces and elastic edges, thanks to which the tile seams are almost invisible. Plates are made by stamping blanks from foam, have a white color and a coarse-grained texture.

Products can be painted in any color using an aqueous emulsion provided that this model does not have a protective film applied to some types of stamped products. The disadvantages include low strength and the presence of casting scars and bursts, which require careful trimming before installation.

Products also differ in surface structure. The front side of the slabs can be smooth, embossed, seamless, mirrored or laminated.

Mirror patterns visually enlarge the room and "raise" the ceiling, seamless patterns create a perfectly flat uniform surface, and laminated patterns are perfect for finishing the ceiling in rooms with high humidity: kitchens, bathrooms and bathrooms.

Size and shape

The most common are square products with a side equal to 50 cm. The advantage of such models is the ease in calculating the required number of plates and simple installation that does not require special finishing skills.

The edge of the slabs can be straight or beveled (at an angle of 45 degrees). The weight of one square meter of foam tile is about 400 grams.

Less common are the sizes of models with a side of 25 and 30 cm.… Rectangular, rhomboid, pentagonal and hexagonal products look much more spectacular, but they are a little more difficult to mount: the formed geometric pattern requires a clear fit of all elements. Otherwise, the pattern will look asymmetrical, lose its attractiveness and lose the correctness of the shape.

The model that imitates the lining is very popular, it very accurately conveys the wood texture and shape of the panels.

Advantages and disadvantages

The popularity of foam models is due to a number of indisputable advantages of this material:

Ease of installation… To finish the ceiling with tiles is within the power of any person, even those who have no experience in finishing work. The large size of the products allows you to quickly paste over the surface and significantly reduce the overall repair time

  • High heat resistance and moisture resistance make it possible to use the material in kitchens and bathrooms. When the tiles are placed in a container with water, the material will absorb only 2% of moisture relative to its weight per day. Installation of tiles near heating pipes and hot water supply is allowed. The only condition will be a ban on the use of the material near sources of open fire.
  • Excellent sound and heat insulation properties material will minimize heat loss through the ceiling, protect from extraneous noise. In terms of its sound-absorbing characteristics, polystyrene is significantly superior to brick, concrete and wood.
  • Low slab weight allows you to use glue that does not have a high strength index, which significantly saves costs.
  • Styrofoam has good resistance to impact salt, cement, lime, alkaline, acid and gypsum solutions, as well as silicone oils, alcohol and water-soluble paints.
  • Environmental Safety foam is confirmed by the toxicity indicator, which corresponds to the value of 0.027 mg / m³, which does not exceed the maximum permissible indicators established by Rospotrebnadzor.
  • Wide range of colors and a variety of textures.

The material also has some disadvantages:

  • Seams and air pockets formed during installation between the surface of the slab and the ceiling are a favorable habitat for cockroaches and ants.
  • Polyfoam does not tolerate the effects of any organic solvent, for example, gasoline, kerosene or acetone, and has a low resistance to nitro enamels and oil paints.
  • The material is not a premium finish, so the foam-pasted ceiling will look a little rustic. But for a quick and inexpensive repair, the material is quite suitable.

  • The most budget models are prone to the appearance of yellow spots and loss of appearance under the influence of dampness. To prevent such troubles, it is recommended to immediately paint the glued tiles with any water-based paint.
  • Attention should also be paid to the poor vapor permeability of the material. If the walls in the room are well ventilated, then such a ceiling will not significantly affect the overall humidity of the room. If the walls are covered with vinyl wallpaper or covered with another material that does not allow air to pass through, then the combination with a foam ceiling can lead to mold and mildew in the room.

Due to the presence of styrene and ethylbenzene in some models, it is better not to use stamped and injection modifications in bedrooms and nurseries

The safest is considered to be extruded polyvinyl chloride foam, which can be used in all types of premises.

The tendency to reflow arising from closely located incandescent lamps obliges to place the lamps at a distance of at least 20 cm from the surface of the plates

Selection Tips

Before proceeding with the purchase of ceiling tiles, it is necessary to accurately calculate the required amount of material that will be needed to decorate the room. If you plan to purchase squares with a side length of 50 cm, then for the calculation you need to multiply the area of the room by 4. The resulting number will mean the number of plates that is needed for finishing. Add 15% to this value. This is necessary in order to provide a stock of material, some of which will go to trimming during the installation process or be accidentally damaged. When calculating the number of products in the form of rhombuses and honeycombs, you should draw a ceiling on a convenient scale, mark the location of all elements on the drawing.

Among tile adhesives, "Titan" has proven itself well … It has high strength and good adhesion. Inexpensive formulations of Dragon, Eltitans and Power can also be used for installing foam, however, these tools have a long setting period, which requires firmly pressing the board and holding it in this position for some time. PVA glue turns yellow over time and shrinks.

Subtleties of installation

The first step should be a thorough preparation of the work surface. To do this, remove all protruding elements from the ceiling, align large protrusions and irregularities with a grinder, eliminate deep chips and cracks. Then you need to prime the surface and wait until it dries completely. The purchased tile should be freed from plastic packaging, allowed to rest and straighten … If there are burrs at the edges of the slabs, they should be cut off with a sharp knife.

Then you can start marking the ceiling. To do this, draw diagonals from opposite corners and mark the place of their intersection. Then it is necessary to mark the middle on each wall, and stretch a thread between the opposite walls connecting their midpoints, and necessarily passing through the center of the room, marked earlier. Straight lines should be drawn along the stretched threads, which will serve as a guide when installing the plates.

After carrying out the preparatory work, you can proceed to the sticker, which can be carried out in the form of straight rows, rows with a shift or diagonally. You need to apply the glue in strips, the distance between which should be 2 cm.

The tile is firmly pressed against the ceiling and held until the glue sets. Any excess compound protruding at the edges should be removed with a dry soft cloth.… Installation should start from the center, gradually moving along the delineated lines running parallel to the wall. Tile joints are masked with acrylic sealant.

You can paint the ceiling a day after the end of the work.

The final stage of installation is the installation of skirting boards. To facilitate the task of holding a long skirting board while waiting for the glue to set, it is recommended to fix it with small nails., which are driven in at a distance of half a meter from each other, and perfectly hold the material. After 24 hours, the cloves should be removed, and the holes and docking corners remaining from them, cover with acrylic sealant.
