The chalet style in architecture is associated with Switzerland as the progenitor of the trend. But he became independent, went beyond the beautiful snowy country and acquired many variations. Without losing the main thing: the general appearance of the building with a sloping roof made of natural materials, cozy, relaxed, maximally conducive to the unity of man and nature.

Advantages and disadvantages

Architecture in this style has distinct, recognizable features. They can also be called the advantages of chalet houses.

What is the difference between such a one-story house and what are its advantages

  • Sloping roof with a steep angle. This is done so that the precipitation rolls off it on its own. Chalets are inherent in areas with a harsh climate, and therefore nowhere without this technological moment. Often such a roof is gable, it looks quite massive, protrudes beyond the box of the building by half a meter, or even by a meter (depending on the proportions of the structure). A small part of the land near the house will also be protected from precipitation.
  • Daylight. Large, panoramic windows are the norm for such a building. They help to literally flood the house with light. Thanks to this solution, the building partly merges with the surrounding landscape, and the rooms are light. This is also a component of general comfort, tranquility, and a peaceful atmosphere.
  • Natural materials. They are used in construction to the maximum. This also applies to the "box" and interior decoration. For example, in a good way, there should be no plastic windows in such a house. Walls are often trimmed with clapboard.
  • Simplicity. Pretentiousness in this house is not the place. Bright shades and gilding - too. Here everything sings along with natural nature, the beauty of natural motives and moods.
  • Lots of awnings. Above the terrace, balconies (if the building has two floors), the porch usually has awnings. They will reliably protect these elements from precipitation, and from the sun during the warm period. They can also go beyond the boundaries of the building.
  • Excellent thermal insulation and microclimate. Wood has "breathable" properties, stone retains heat excellently in winter.
  • Reduced load on the foundation. To a greater extent, this correlates with two-story houses, because a brick or stone completely takes on the load from the upper floor, it is transferred to the foundation.
  • Savings on finishing. Authentic buildings inside are decorated "as is", stone or wood. Smoothness is not needed here. Therefore, if you follow the canons, the savings on this point will be tangible.

The speed of construction is also usually pleasing, because those who are in a hurry definitely need to take a closer look at such buildings.

Cons of chalet-style houses

  • High construction costs. Natural materials, as a rule, are more expensive than artificial ones, which affects the final estimate.
  • The need for a professional project. The designer needs an experienced one, for example, the weight of the roof should be taken into account, it is more than usual.

A chalet house is usually a stone or wooden structure. Used and glued laminated timber, and a log, and a blockhouse, less often it is made of foam blocks, aerated concrete, even less often from SIP panels. There are very few flat-roofed chalets, but there are projects with different slopes.

Projects overview

1-storey chalets have become popular, as this number of storeys can save money, but the appearance and comfort will not be affected.

With terrace

Even a small terrace is necessary for the house, because it opens up more opportunities for those living in it. In the warm season, you can spend time on it - have breakfast, read, sit alone, looking at the beauty before your eyes. In winter, you can put a Christmas tree on the terrace, for example, which is no less interesting than the home version of the New Year's decor. There are many projects of this type, because the terrace is firmly akin to the concept of a country house on the 1st floor, and rightfully so.

With attic

The attic is not a full-fledged second floor, but partly replaces it. Its size will not allow planning several rooms there, but it will most likely be possible to place a bedroom and a small bathroom. It will be a quiet area where nothing will interfere with rest and sound sleep.

If, nevertheless, it is decided to place the bedrooms downstairs, and the house has already been planned that way, you can make a workshop in the attic - a wonderful atmospheric place.

With veranda

The spacious veranda can partially protrude beyond the roof. In two-story structures, it is often taken out to the second floor, and then large wooden columns are used as supports.

A winter garden, a recreation area and even a playground can be safely taken out on the veranda below. Guest or dining areas can also be located in this part of the house. Modern verandas are open and closed. The closed ones are all-season, and the open ones are more like terraces.

Others

Such a house may also have a basement. He usually solves at least two problems. The first is the demolition of utility rooms in one place, the second is the arrangement of a sauna, a cellar, a billiard room, and so on there. And there you can make an additional bedroom, which will delight you with its coolness in the hot summer.

By the way, about the sauna. It can be taken out in a separate room, but if the site is small, this is not entirely convenient and certainly not economical.

Therefore, the sauna in the chalet house is often taken out into the basement, equipped with good thermal insulation. And even for the arrangement of a mini-pool, a place can remain.

Tips for choosing a layout

Even projects that are finished to the smallest detail suggest the possibility of redevelopment if the customer wants to make changes to the project. Self-planning is also possible, but requires certain competencies from the owner. At the very least, you will have to practice in special programs that greatly simplify the design of the customer's ideas into projects. But even after that, the finished project must be approved by specialists, because a non-professional can make significant mistakes.

Expert advice on competent planning

Common rooms can be combined into one space. It is primarily about the kitchen, dining room and living room. And such a combination is as consonant as possible with the very style of the chalet - you get a huge space with dedicated zones. Here you can allow a fireplace, and bulky furniture, and, of course, ceiling beams

Bedrooms are usually located at the back of the house., and even on the attic floor, if there is one

Image
Image
Image
Image

Bathrooms are more often adjacent to the kitchen, it is beneficial from the point of view of engineering communications

Image
Image
Image
Image

A hallway is needed, no matter what size it is. This room will be an additional barrier between the entrance and living rooms, ensuring heat retention in the house

Image
Image

The utility part can be in the basement or next to the kitchen. The pantry and the furnace room are more often adjacent to the kitchen

Image

Corridors should not take away usable area unless it can be done without it.

But they can also be made more functional, for example, by using part of the corridor for the library.

Image
Image

Even in a small frame house you want a lot of light, and even in a chalet it seems to be asking for the very type of construction. Especially if there is a beautiful view outside the window, trees, a garden or a forest in front. In a snowy season, the opening picture behind the panoramic windows of the living room will be the best decor in the house.

Room decoration

In a modern country house, made in the style of a chalet, a special interior is created, with its own energy and design rules. They are not axiomatic, but you definitely need to listen to them.

Registration rules

Classic wall decoration - this is natural wood, wooden panels or timber with the most unpretentious, barely noticeable finish. The stone is also used, but it will come out more expensive. Of course, artificial stone will save money, but the use of such materials is already contrary to the style

Image
Image
Image
Image

Natural wood is also suitable for flooring, or rather, is the most acceptable option. A stone or tile, preferably with a worn effect, will be a good alternative, but not in all rooms. Bathroom, kitchen, hallway are good with tiles, but other spaces want warm wood. As for carpets, the emphasis is on light and plain carpets with a short pile. Natural hides can be substituted for carpet, if this does not contradict the beliefs of the owners

Image

The chalet-style ceiling features wooden beams. If the room is low, a white flat surface is enough, however, beams, if you really want to, are appropriate in a low room, just do not need to make them massive. The best option is dark ceiling beams (deliberately rough, inhomogeneous in terms of color) and light wood panels as a background

Chalet-style furniture is also only natural materials. Everything is environmentally friendly, soundly, for real. The pieces of furniture may initially be artificially aged. And this is not necessarily something refined - a simple sideboard, made with your own hands, from a peasant house, will also quite take root in the kitchen. Massive furniture of simple shape is preferable

Image
Image
Image
Image

Armchairs and sofa upholstered in natural fabric or leather, it is possible to decorate with wood carvings where appropriate. Forged items will also find a place in the chalet house

Image
Image
Image
Image

Textiles have their own requirements. A linen tablecloth and the same napkins will look great in the kitchen. A place for carpets with a short pile can also be found on the wall - it is authentic and fashionable again. Self-woven rugs are the perfect decor. If there are curtains on the windows, then there may be a simple cut, hooks. Linen, cotton and matting are excellent curtain materials. Well, where in a chalet without warm blankets

Horns and stuffed animals on the walls are not uncommon for chalets. Vases with dried flowers and wildflowers will also blend in with this space. There are massive candlesticks on the fireplace or chest of drawers, in the kitchen there is a lot of ceramics and earthenware. Clay animal figurines will look good in any room. And as a decor (functional, by the way), an old - or aged - chest is suitable

This style is warm, real, you want to live in it, because there is that sincerity in it, which is not about fashion magazines and interiors without a flaw, but about the taste for life.

Beautiful examples

The chalet can be made of chopped logs and laminated veneer lumber, different in color and layout. You can see interesting projects here.

Beautiful chalet houses

Large windows and an open veranda are already a wonderful start. A one-storey house does not mean small, it can be more than 100 m2, and everything you really need will fit here. A very laconic house with the anticipation of a cozy "filling"

Image
Image

In the domestic realities of a chalet, this may be so. Yes, not against the backdrop of the Swiss mountains, but also good. And in the evenings you probably won't want to leave such a terrace

Image
Image
Image
Image

Uneven slopes only add to the attractiveness of this one-story house. It is simple, even somewhere ascetic, but this is a reference to the dwelling of Swiss shepherds - that is, the original source of the style

Image
Image

No complicated decisions needed, because already in the ready-made, traditional ones, the main thing is laid - good quality, strength, comfort, relevance at any time

Image
Image
Image
Image

Dark house with luminous windows and an unusual roof - a chalet can be like that. Simple, but naggingly cozy, self-sufficient, requiring no additional decor

Image
Image

The chalet is just as good in summer as it is in winter. And sunsets can be met while sitting in the living room, or better - going out onto the terrace. It is really possible to equip a summer dining room here, and it will be an ideal family pastime

Stone and wood complement the ideal landscape - and that's it. Naturalness and reliability decide

Small house, but still a chalet. Ideal as a summer cottage

Dark frames, hanging lights, general brutality - many people like such buildings, helping to move away from the hustle and bustle of the city
