Features of the

Marble plaster is made of acrylic or mineral polymers with the addition of natural stone chips. The acrylic version usually has a translucent and completely transparent structure. Mineral additives in combination with marble chips give a wide variety of colors. Depending on the purpose in building stores, today you can choose a moisture-resistant, antibacterial, highly plastic and particularly resistant to mechanical damage plaster. In addition, the decorative function of such a coating is achieved by adding sparkles, mother of pearl and other additional impurities to the mixture.

Among the advantages of this coating are the following positions:

  • Resistance to sudden temperature changes and atmospheric phenomena. Marble plaster is very actively used for exterior decoration.
  • Steam tightness allows laying the flooring in saunas and baths.
  • The increased moisture resistance is found in the names recommended for use in swimming pools, bathrooms and also for outdoor use.
  • Having natural marble chips in stock, such plaster is environmentally friendly and resistant to mechanical damage.
  • Full fire safety with such a coating is also provided.
  • You can apply marble plaster to any surface - this is its versatility.

Disadvantages of coverage:

  • high price;
  • laying the material requires experience and skill;
  • it is necessary to use finishing agents: varnish or paint.

However, these disadvantages attract even more people who want to use marble plaster. To choose the right texture, you need to understand the variety of types of this finishing material.

There are several options for the classification of textured plaster with marble chips:

  • By the main substance. Marble plaster can be made of lime, acrylic or cement-sand mixture.
  • By the size of marble chips. This classification also divides the finishing material into 3 types: fine-grained (0.2-1 mm), medium-grained (1-3 mm) and coarse-grained (3-5 mm).
  • According to the state of the mixture. Marble plaster is sold both ready-made and dry.

The decorative component in different mixtures also varies:

  • marble chips give maximum adhesion to any surface;
  • granite grains provide the composition with the highest strength and durability;
  • the granite-marble component increases the usability of the material and wear resistance.

Most often, marble plaster of fine and medium fraction is chosen for interior work. Compositions based on marble are suitable for decorating walls made of plasterboard, brick, gas and foam concrete blocks. Textured marble plaster for walls is a very beautiful and durable finishing material. It serves for a long time and is almost not subject to mechanical damage. The convenience of its use is also associated with its care. Since the material is practically not afraid of moisture, it can be wiped with a damp cloth.

Professionals advise not to start applying plaster with marble chips on your own, since this process is quite complicated and requires certain professional skills.

Application technology

Plastering of the surface is always carried out using tools and a base substance for processing. Below is a list of tools you may need:

  • Two spatulas. Ideally, these should be stainless steel products. You can also use a rubber narrow and wide tool.
  • Trowel Is a double-sided polished steel blade with a curved handle. With its help, the marble plaster is laid directly.
  • Grater and grater. The first tool evens out the applied solution, the second one performs grouting.
  • Mixing container. Typically a plastic or metal bucket is used. It must be ensured that it is clean to avoid uneven consistency and loss of plasticity of the marble plaster.
  • Electric drill with mixer attachment (if a dry mixture is purchased that needs to be kneaded, it is very difficult to do it manually).
  • Building level - to determine the evenness of the application of the plaster layer.
  • Master OK … This small tool is required to apply the mortar to the trowel.

Having checked the availability of everything you need, you can start preparing the surface to be treated. Since marble mixes are applied as a final coat, the surface underneath must be even and dry. Therefore, first of all, the wall is cleaned of dust and dirt, it is examined for cracks, pits, bulges. When they are found, a special cement-sand mortar is prepared, with which it is all sealed. It is better to remove the old layer of plaster in those places where it is especially visually noticeable.

If there are areas with mold or mildew, they must first be cleaned, then treated with a product with a high chlorine content. It is better to treat the entire wall with antiseptic solutions to reduce the risk of such growths in the future. Using a level, you need to check how smooth the wall is. If necessary, apply a layer of starter filler or plaster. After drying, the entire surface should be primed. If a transparent acrylic mixture is chosen for finishing, then a covering primer should be chosen. Before applying, it must be painted in the basic color of marble plaster.

It should be noted that the soil dries for at least 12 hours. You need to leave the surface alone for this time. In the meantime, you can start kneading the marble plaster. Even ready-made mixtures sometimes have a too thick consistency, therefore, in accordance with the recommendations on the package, it is diluted with water or a solvent.

After the primer has dried on the wall, plaster is applied. To do this, you need to perform a number of actions:

  • A small amount of the solution is collected with a trowel in a container.
  • From the trowel, the mixture is transferred to the trowel - it is already applying the plaster to the wall. In this case, the tool must be held at an angle of 60 degrees relative to the application surface. The mixture is laid in an even layer in one direction. Usually the processing is done in squares. During the application process, do not allow the extreme lines of the plaster to dry out.
  • After processing the entire surface, you must wait 30 minutes until the layer is dry, then you can start grouting. The stainless steel grater must be pressed very tightly against the treated wall and smooth in a circle using the same force. In this process, there is no need to make strong pressure or concentrate on one area for a long time.
  • Finally, the marble plaster dries up a day after application. This is ideal for varnishing or coating with hydrophobic additives that will give the surface a glossy sheen and provide additional protection from damage. After that, the wall dries for another 12 hours.

In total, the process of applying and processing surfaces takes a little more than two days. To speed up this process, professionals use a mechanical crumb blower - this is a small container with a nozzle at the bottom, a nozzle, a special nozzle that is connected to the compressor. The hole from which the marble mortar is sprayed has a diameter of about 6 mm.

After the preparatory measures, the plaster mixture is poured into the bucket container and the application is started. The nozzle should be at a distance of about 50 cm. Processing is carried out from top to bottom, carefully observing the same layer over the entire surface. The mechanical process is completed in the same way as the manual one.

In order for the process of finishing the premises to be as comfortable and correct as possible, you should adhere to the basic tips given by the professionals in the repair business.

Tips & Tricks

The above is the most commonly used method of applying marble plaster. There are some more nuances associated with what result must be obtained at the end of the process:

  • The plaster with coarse marble chips is applied with a stainless steel float. In this case, the effect "wet on wet" is used: without letting one layer dry, the second is applied on top. Only after half an hour you can start grouting, as in the standard application scheme.
  • You can lay the plaster at some intervals between the pieces to be treated, or you can make small overlaps. However, it should be remembered that a larger number of strokes and layers will make the result more refined and close to the look of natural stone. Grouting periods must also be observed between coats.
  • Sometimes it is customary to use wax as a finishing layer - it gives the surface a silky shine. Possessing protective properties, the wax layer will eliminate the ingress of dust particles into the marble coating.
  • The use of proven and well-known manufacturers will save you from buying low-quality material.

In terms of care, marble plaster is a completely unpretentious material, but only if it was covered with a finishing layer: varnish or wax. If the finishing material itself turned out to be final, then such a coating will require due regard, like natural marble, and this material is afraid of harsh cleaning agents and coloring liquids. The surface treated with marble plaster can be washed with a mild soapy solution.

The environment is very important when applying this material to walls. It is necessary to observe the air temperature from +5 to +20 degrees, as well as humidity - not higher than 65%. These indicators are required even during the drying of the surface.

When performing work on a sunny day, it is necessary to do everything possible to hide from it the wall where the marble plaster will be applied, since the sun's rays will lead to rapid drying and, as a result, cracking of the coating. All tools and container in which the solution was mixed, must be washed immediately, otherwise, after drying, they will simply have to be thrown away.

As for the material consumption, it directly depends on the size of the marble chips in the plaster. For example, a fine-grained mixture is consumed in the amount of 1.5-2 kg per 1 m2. Material with medium grains of marble is consumed from 2.5 to 3 kg per 1 sq. m. And, finally, large inclusions of a noble stone increase the coating consumption up to 5 kg per unit of measurement. In this case, the layer should always be 2-2.5 times the size of the marble chips.

Style and design

Imitation of masonry is used quite often in the interior. You can find many options for finishing the basement and facade of the building. Marble plaster is used to transform a bathroom, living room, kitchen, dining room or terrace. Much less often, such a finishing material is applied in living rooms.

The colors that are available on the building materials market today delight the eye with their variety. The marble pattern is a mixture of three shades, the most saturated is taken as a basis, to which colors are mixed in the same range, but paler. There are mixtures of all possible colors on sale, including white, emerald, red, brown and other shades.

A separate topic is the original technique of applying marble plaster in two or three different colors. The most difficult, but also the most exciting is the process of laying the material in the form of a specific pattern. It can be described step by step as follows:

  • A picture prepared in advance is glued to the wall. This can be done with masking tape, which is a very important companion for the treatment of surfaces with marble plaster.
  • The first layer of background material is applied around the picture.
  • After 30 minutes, the layer is leveled with a float, the picture is removed.
  • The contour is pasted - a stencil of the picture on the background.
  • A layer of plaster of a different color is applied to the stencil, where the picture was located before.
  • The layer is leveled again after half an hour, and the stencil is removed.

Oracal self-adhesive film can also be used as a stencil, which is easy to remove and does not leave marks on the surface.
