Diagonal tile laying is popular due to the fact that, thanks to its scheme, it turns out to be beautiful in any room. Of course, it will take more material and effort, but it is worth the result that will eventually turn out.

Features of the

The finish can be monochromatic or in different colors, with a variety of patterns and spectacular inserts. Diagonal laying can be done with tiles of any shape: even a square, even a rectangle. The square shape of the tile is more often used, since it is much easier to make the correct laying from such modules, because sometimes long rectangles have to be cut several times to fit the required size of the ceramics.

Mostly colored parts are placed in the center, creating a kind of pattern. To properly lay the tiles, you must follow the step-by-step instructions.

Advantages and disadvantages

Before starting work, you need to study the advantages and disadvantages of this installation method in order to make sure of the right choice.

Pros:

Visually enlarges the space… Depending on the selected color and composition, it expands or lengthens it

  • Looks original and impressive … The originality lies precisely in the layout.
  • Hide curvature opposite walls.
Image
Image
  • It is possible to divide the room into zones original compositions of a particular area.
  • The layout of rectangular tiles is most often done in this way..

Minuses:

  • The installation of this method is much more difficult due to the difficulty of marking and the large amount of cutting.
  • Great need for finishing materials: as a result of cutting, consumption will increase by 5-10%.
  • Cutting requires precision and precision. It is better to use a good tool when working, which also entails costs.

Tools and materials

To start the installation process, you need to prepare the necessary tools and materials, as well as make accurate calculations. Required tools:

  • utensils for mixtures and glue;
  • spatulas;
  • grout;
  • device for checking the evenness of the horizontal;
  • rope;
  • marker;
  • ruler;
  • spacers and crosses;
  • mallet;
  • slab cutter;
  • gloves.

Of the materials, the tiles themselves will be needed, glue, primer, grouting paste, self-leveling composition as needed. Perhaps, there will be a need for something else, but this can be purchased in the process of work or use improvised means.

When choosing a self-leveling mixture, it is necessary to take into account the temperature of the room where the installation will be carried out - if the choice is wrong, negative effects may appear.

The option of laying tiles on a cement mortar has long been outdated. Today there is a huge selection of adhesive mixtures:

  • For tiles small parameters use cement-based glue. It is produced in the form of a powder mass and at a relatively low price.
  • For modules with medium dimensions, epoxy glue is suitable. It goes on sale as a ready-made composition, it does not take too much time for preparation.
  • On a wooden floor, so that when walking on it the tile does not fall off, use polyurethane glue, it is extremely elastic. It can be used in the previous cases as well.

An error in the choice of glue can subsequently turn into crumbling, cracking and peeling of the floor tile. To avoid this, you need to consult with a specialist when purchasing.

You also need to pay attention to the quality of the tile - it is better not to save on it. Size mismatch is common (one tile is slightly larger than the other). This will affect the evenness and symmetry of the masonry. Wear resistance is also an important factor - if it is poor, cracks can quickly appear.

A variety of cleaning agents when cleaning the floor can wipe the surface and pattern of the tile if it is of poor quality. The material must also be resistant to physical stress. Such situations usually arise in the bathroom and kitchen, that is, where moisture is constantly present, falling objects, moving stools, and the like.

Preparation and markup

The most difficult and important thing in such work is a well-prepared foundation. First you need to level the surface: grind the slides, and cover the holes with a solution.

If the floor has very large flaws, then it is better to completely fill its plane with a self-leveling mixture.… To do this, you need to mix a special powder with water, bring to a homogeneous mass and apply to the area. The mixture takes the necessary level by itself - it is only necessary to disperse it to the right places and make sure that there are no bubbles. When the screed sets, the surface must be primed with a millimeter layer of impregnation.

After that, you can proceed to the markup. For this:

  • Using a rope, you need to mark a diagonal from corner to corner or draw a line with chalk. You should start work from the corner with a diagonally cut tile.
  • If the center is very open in the room, then it is better to start with it: for this you need to draw two diagonals and find the intersection point.

Material calculation

When laying diagonally, trim should be used rationally. The workflow and material consumption are also influenced by the calculation.

  • You can make a calculation by drawing a layout plan on a paper sheet to scale. The whole tiles are counted first, then the number of cut elements. It is good if from one element you will get two trims of the desired size.
  • To calculate the area of the room, you need to divide by the area of one tile. Thus, we get the number of required modules in their pure form. It should be borne in mind that the largest possible number of unusable scraps.

In both cases, it is necessary to add 10-15% to the resulting result for damage, scrap and errors. The required amount of glue must be calculated by following the instructions on the package, and preferably done with a small margin.

Technology

The diagonal laying process is similar to the usual one:

  • the tile must be applied, observing the gap, using crosses;
  • slightly pressing and tapping with a mallet, adjust the horizontal level;
  • the laying process must be monitored: the overall horizontal level must be checked.

In the first step, only solid parts should be used. Along the perimeter, you need to finish the contour in 1-2 days, when the main area gets stronger, so that you can work on it calmly without fear of deformation of the general level.

The edges from the side of the cut are processed with sandpaper, and for easy cutting of the tile, it is soaked in water for about half an hour.

Tiling can be done in two common ways, depending on the nature of the area to be installed.

First option. If the middle of the room is located in an area that is not obstructed by anything (a table or other objects), then you need to lay the modules from the middle: into four separate triangular parts.

  • The corner of the tile is placed to the central corner of one of the sectors, where all the markings intersect, and the edge is applied to the diagonal.
  • Then they lay out the row, ending it in the corner of the room, and again return to the center. It is necessary to repeat the procedure in the opposite direction. After that, a complete strip of tiles is formed across the entire room diagonally.
  • You should also do with other rows crossing the finished diagonal. Next, you need to fill in the resulting triangular parts, but only when the diagonal rows get stronger.

Second option. If the middle of the room is cluttered with something or just slightly striking, then the most prominent place is the area at the entrance, which is located immediately after the doorway. Then it is more rational to use the second option, which provides for laying tiles from the corner of the surface. Here, initially, they begin to put modules cut into triangles.

The main thing is to put the first row exactly. You need to take two triangles of the tiles and place them in the left corner of the doorway, and then lay out the next rows in order, filling the entire area with solid elements.

If the walls are curved, the geometry of the room may be disturbed.

At the final stage, it may be difficult to fit the tiles near the wall. It is better to use a stencil cut from thin cardboard in the form of a module … The shape of the desired element is made from it and redrawn onto the tile detail. Then cut out according to the sample and glued to the required place.

There are other options, for example, with an offset center. But such methods are not very common and are rarely applied in practice.

You will learn more about how to lay tiles on the floor diagonally by watching the following video.

Seams

At the end of the process, you need to wipe the seams between the modules. Only after the glue has completely solidified, when it will already be possible to walk freely on the surface, they remove all unnecessary from the seams and start grouting. The paste is diluted to a semi-liquid state and pressed into the confined places with a non-rigid tool.

Image
Image

It is necessary to wipe the floor in parts of no more than 2 m² at a time, because there is a risk of not having time to clean the excess - the paste quickly hardens and is not washed well afterwards.

After the mixture has dried on one part, the tiles should be cleaned from its remnants: better wipe with a soft cloth to add shine and shine … After that, you should proceed to the next section.

The grout mixture is chosen according to the color combination with the modules, so as not to spoil the overall composition. You can emphasize the borders of tiles by highlighting specific areas, or, conversely, you can make them invisible.
