Mosaics are often used to decorate architectural structures, external and internal spaces. Due to modern technologies, in our time, new varieties of mosaic masonry have become available that did not exist before. One of them is a mirror mosaic.

Features of the

The essence of using such a mosaic is that it is folded from small pieces. The mirror surface, reflecting light and the surrounding world, has been known to mankind for a long time. Pieces of mirrors have been used in the creation of mosaic panels before. A mirror was good for this. If it broke, the shards could be inserted into the mosaic decor.

With the massive use of mirror pieces in interior design, for example, in one of the halls of the palace, they were specially made to order. But mirrors, which are made for household needs, have one distinguishing feature - fragility. Therefore, the material for a mosaic made of such glass was not very suitable. Until recently, mirror mosaics were rarely used in interiors.

Modern technology has made it possible to develop mirror glass that is more durable than before. It is from it that modern mirror mosaics are made. Its individual pieces have processed edges. Therefore, cubes that reflect light can be used anywhere in the interior, building facade to decorate furniture and household items.

Today, silver mosaic with rhinestones is quite popular, as well as options with various inserts on top.

Characteristics

The modern mirror mosaic is particularly durable. It is harder to scratch it than tiles. Therefore, it can be included in the interior design. Like any glass, it is inert to moisture, chemical solutions, the effects of precipitation outside the building. It is a quality material for interior decoration.

The mosaic has its own color. It is a neutral gray tone that can be combined with almost any color scheme in the interior.

Due to the mirrored surface, the elements have a reflectivity. This allows you to change the space of the room: expand it or narrow it depending on the location of the area filled with mirror mosaics. The mirror surface takes on shades of the environment, mimicking any style and color combination of the space in which it is used.

It actively reflects light, so rooms with insufficient lighting become brighter thanks to its use. She has the ability to reflect point light sources, filling the space with sparks and highlights.

However, laying the tiles on a flat surface should be ideal. If you lay the mosaic crookedly, the display of the surrounding world and light may be disturbed. Therefore, it is recommended to trust the installation during repairs.

Varieties

Like any mosaic, mirror mosaic has varieties. The tile has a thickness of up to 5 mm, it is thin and thick. It can be traditionally square, rectangular, elongated, six- and octagonal. There is one that consists of pieces of different shapes, carefully matched to each other.

Manufacturers today offer different shades of mirror tiles. There are gold, bronze and even black shades on sale. Such tiles retain their specularity and ability to reflect the world, so they look interesting in the interior.

Because mosaic tiles actively refract color, edge design is of paramount importance. It is of three types.

  • In inexpensive tiles, it is polished. A mosaic with this edge is slightly matte.
  • The polished edge looks better and additionally refracts light. But the most expensive and creating additional volume is the facet (beveled side edge along the perimeter of the tile).
  • A mosaic with such an edge is more expensive, looks better on any surfaces (flat and curved). Therefore, when choosing bars, you need to pay attention to the edge.

For wet rooms, manufacturers have developed a mirror mosaic with a special coating that allows the tiles to resist moisture and detergents. If it is necessary to finish mirrored surfaces in the kitchen and bathroom (bathroom wall, shower, surfaces near the sink, the wall of the working plane in the kitchen), you must choose just such a tile.

All existing varieties can be divided into 2 types: on a grid and without it. At the moment, in stores, you can choose a mirror mosaic set in a canvas and attached to a grid. Such material is easier to mount. The presence of the mesh allows you to reduce the time spent on facing work. There is no need to adjust the distance between the individual fragments of the mirror composition.

You can pick up material in bulk and install one tile at a time yourself, or entrust this matter to a professional stacker. Manufacturers produce self-adhesive mosaics, on the back of which an adhesive has already been applied. It is more expensive than bulk material. But on the other hand, it is easier to mount it. Even anyone can handle it.

Immediately before installation, it is necessary to remove the protective layer from the back of the typesetting cloth. This should not be done in advance so that the adhesive does not dry out. Next, you need to forcefully press the mosaic to the prepared surface and wait until the fragment is securely fixed. The adhesive composition perfectly interacts with the wall surface and securely fixes the canvas to it.

You can smooth out the unevenness of the canvas with a roller, then the mosaic will fit perfectly.

Application

Mirror mosaic has decorative properties. It can be combined with various other tiles and finishing materials. It is rarely used completely on all surfaces, so strong will be the glow and reflection. If you cover all surfaces of the room with mirror mosaics, you will get a negative impression. Excess scatters attention, it breaks the interior and overloads it.

As a rule, mirror mosaics are combined with other types of finishes. Interacting with each other, matte colored and mirrored pieces will emphasize the beauty of each other. You can also combine small mirror cubes with other finishing materials such as tiles. In this case, sections of planes and fragments that reflect light will be a great addition to the interior. They will organically fit into the modern industrial style of interior decoration, complement the classic and restrained interiors. Shiny light-reflecting mosaics accentuate the sophistication of classics

Mirror mosaic in the interior can be used like any glass. It can be used to decorate any surface of the room - floor, ceiling, walls, furniture, work areas and bathroom walls, used as edging, and decorate household items. Durability and inertness to chemical attack make it possible to apply mosaics in bathrooms and kitchens. It can be used to complement the interiors of living rooms, hallways and bedrooms.

Like any small mosaic, the mirror is easily attached to flat walls and fits well on any curved shapes, unlike a real mirror, which is produced flat. It can be laid out in fragments, vertical or horizontal stripes, independent tiles.

To cover curved surfaces, select the smallest elements. Then it will be possible to most accurately repeat the curvature of the base.

A separate use of shiny pieces is mirror panels. This does not mean that the entire surface should only consist of mosaics. Such panels are a combination of matte and mirror surfaces. For example, a floral pattern or a leaf motif made of mirrored pieces can be placed against a matte white ceramic background. Such panels look impressive and expensive. If you want to create an image on the wall of a bathroom or living room, you can choose a ready-made one in the store. You can order the masters who will develop an individual drawing and put the image together.

With your own hands

If you wish, you can create your own mosaic from the mirror pieces. But this process requires adherence to a certain technology. First you need to find a mirror that you no longer need. Then you need to cut it into pieces with a glass cutter. They should not be too small so that it is easier to attach to the base. Next, you need to sandpaper the edges so that you do not cut yourself on their sharp edges. The edge should be straight and blunt.

Fixation nuances

It is imperative to prepare the base (even, without humps and dry). On the basis, you can draw a pattern that will be laid out from pieces of a mirror. To fix the mosaic, “liquid nails” glue is applied to the base and the decorative elements are gently pressed down. Glue for ceramic products is contraindicated, as it negatively affects the surface of the mirror, corroding it from the back. It is imperative to observe the size of the seams, which is no more than 5 mm.

After that, you need to wait 3 hours until the mirror fragments adhere well. Then you can grout between light or white joints. Dark colors will look bad with shimmery trim. The spatula should be rubber so as not to damage the fragile glass. It is imperative to remove excess grout in the joints.

After 5 hours, when the grout is dry, you can polish the mosaic with a soft cloth to give it a shine.
