In the conditions of a small squaring of an apartment or room, it is so important to create additional storage space that would be able to accommodate a large volume. A bed with a lifting mechanism is that magic wand for any bedroom, which gives a good rest and carefully stores temporarily unnecessary things.

Features and Benefits

A lifter bed is a wooden box with a storage box inside and an orthopedic base outside. The base is attached to the box by means of a special mechanism, which allows raising / lowering the "sleeping" place. If we talk about a sleeping place, then it should be orthopedic and strong, that is, it should consist of lamellas (small curved plates) and withstand the load: the weight of the mattress and the person. A single bed usually withstands a weight of up to 100 kg, a double bed - 120-150 kg (there are models up to 250 kg) for one berth (that is, 240 kg).

The models vary in size and cost, materials used and how they work, but the advantages of each are obvious:

  1. Suitable even for a small bedroom.
  2. Creates additional storage space hidden from prying eyes.
  3. The bed is easy to use for both children and adults. Even a child can lift the base and get the necessary things, provided that the bed is equipped with shock absorbers or springs.
  4. Has an orthopedic base, which means it makes sleep safe and beneficial.
  5. Allows you to create any interior - from classics to varieties of modern trends.
  6. You can choose the direction of opening the bed: there are models with a side lifting mechanism and with opening to the headboard or vertical.

Beds with a box inside differ in price, which consists of the type of mechanism (and its country of origin) and the materials from which the bed is made: beds with natural or eco-leather upholstery, as well as a bed with a box made of solid wood, are recognized as expensive models.

Sooner or later, the lift itself will have to be replaced with a new one: frequent lifting and lowering of the base leads to wear of the fittings. It becomes not so strong and smooth in movement. Beds with a gas lift will require replacement of the lift in 5-10 years, with springs - in 3-5, and the most budgetary ones with a manual lift can do without "repair" at all.

Varieties

The models differ in the type of lifting mechanism of the orthopedic base.

On gas shock absorbers

The most common and modern type of lifting mechanism in beds. The principle of its operation lies in the installed gas lifts - small lifts and shock absorbers that literally raise and lower the bed themselves. The advantages of a gas lift are:

  1. Silent work.
  2. Ease of use: no effort is required to lift the bed.
  3. Reliability.
  4. Long service life (5-10 years even with frequent opening of the box).
  5. Smooth movements when lifting the base.

Among the significant disadvantages of the mechanism on gas shock absorbers, one can designate a high price: its cost is higher than the rest and directly depends on the materials of the bed, the manufacturer of the accessories and the weight that it can withstand:

With spring mechanism

The mechanism is equipped with springs, which are responsible for raising and lowering the base. The spring system is not durable: its service life is 3-5 years, after which it should be completely replaced. During the operation of the bed, the springs wear out quickly: they stretch after each opening and closing. The spring mechanism of the lifting bed is in demand because of its low price.

Manual mechanism with hinged lift

The cheapest mechanism. The manual lift has no hinges or shock absorbers, which means you will have to make an effort to lift it. If an adult cope with such a task, then a child is unlikely, therefore models with a hinged lift are created mainly for double beds. The big advantage of such a model is not only the affordable cost, but also the durability of the mechanism - it practically does not wear out.

Lift beds differ in the opening direction: an adult book bed can swing open to the side (from right to left, for example) or open at the foot of the bed to the headboard. Almost all models of beds with a lifting mechanism are orthopedic, that is, they have a slatted bottom with slats in the amount of 24 or more pieces (depending on the width of the berth). The base has a metal frame and flexible birch panels 6-7 cm wide.

The bed can be wooden: solid wood, chipboard or chipboard, veneered or upholstered with textile upholstery (leather, eco-leather, velor, any furniture fabric). Soft beds are very practical and ideal for classic interiors, while "hard" models go well with modern and hi-tech. Just do not confuse "lifts" with transformers, which are "removed" into a wall niche and do not have a hint of a storage box. Children's beds with a lifting mechanism can be angular: something like an ottoman with a soft back or regular ones, have a soft back or be completely wooden.

Top Models: Ranking

The main manufacturers are:

  • Ascona. The brand is famous for its beds, mechanisms and sleep accessories. Among the models with a lifting mechanism are presented "Milana", "Marta", "Erica" in 79 colors and 2-3 bed options.

Dimensions (edit)

All beds are conventionally divided into single and double beds, and those, in turn, have an additional size range.

One-bed

Ideal for teenagers. Often, single beds with a lifting mechanism resemble an ottoman - a small couch with a backrest and additional storage space. There are also classic wooden models with sizes:

  1. 140 x 190 cm.
  2. 150 x 190 cm.

Double

The size range of such beds is as follows:

  1. 140 x 200 cm.
  2. 160 x 200 cm.
  3. 180 x 200 cm.
  4. 200 x 200 cm.

Materials (edit)

The bed frame can be made of:

  • solid wood;
  • Chipboard or chipboard;
  • MDF.

If a non-solid wood is used, it is important to choose a high-quality chipboard coated with natural veneer, then the model will be difficult to distinguish from the same heavy oak or beech.

External finishing of the stock can be made of:

  • eco-leather;
  • natural leather;
  • veneer.

The frame may not be finished at all: it is painted with paint and processed with a special compound.

Color solutions

Wooden models are produced mainly in natural shades: white, light wood (bleached oak), pine, wenge, black. Beds upholstered in textiles or leather are distinguished by a wide range of colors, which often exceed 50-80 shades. For example, in the Ascona brand, soft beds are presented in 79 colors.

Manufacturers overview

Ikea has a double bed with a "lift" - model Malm in three colors. The bed frame is made of chipboard, the bottom slats are made of birch and beech veneer, the bottom itself is metal (like all similar beds).

Belarusian beds made of solid wood with textile upholstery have established themselves as stylish and practical furniture for the bedroom. A striking example is "Bobruisk Furniture" with affordable prices and positive reviews.

How to choose?

Healthy sleep is the foundation of life. To make it really useful, choose a full bed: a single bed for a teenager and a double bed for a couple:

  1. The size of the berth. For two, the best choice would be a bed 160 x 200 cm or 180 x 200 cm and even more if the space allows you to install such a bed, for a teenager - a single bed or one and a half - up to 140 cm wide.
  2. Base opening side. The bed can "open" like a book - to the side or to the headboard.
  3. Mechanism. Russian factories choose Italian mechanisms or parts of their own production - they have also proven themselves as reliable pieces of furniture.
  4. Additional elements. The lifting mechanism can be supplemented with blockers, amplifiers - they significantly facilitate the lifting of the base and make it safer;
  5. Box. Boxes can be "leaky" inside or have floor coverings that prevent dust from accumulating on stored items.
  6. Orthopedic base. All modern models are sold with it. The greater the number of lamellas - small paired wooden slats, the greater the load the bed can withstand. Birch plates are most preferable because they are lightweight, moderately flexible, strong and allow the mattress to "breathe" - to allow moisture and air to pass through.

Choose a salesperson who will assemble the bed at your home and provide a guarantee for work.

Assembling the lifting mechanism is a complex, laborious and responsible process, therefore it requires the work of a qualified and experienced craftsman, otherwise the safety of using the bed can be questioned.

How to assemble?

The procedure is as follows:

  1. Bed base assembled and pulled together on eccentrics, confirmations and self-tapping screws.
  2. Every corner of it must be bolted together.
  3. Installed pre-assembled lifting mechanism to the lower housing (depending on the intended mounting location).
  4. The upper part is assembled, lifting mechanisms "cling" to it.
  5. The upper part is "put on" on the bed box, the internal lifting mechanisms are interconnected.

How to do it yourself?

There are a lot of instructions and details for the production of a double bed, consider one of the options for a 1800 x 2000 mm model. We will need:

  • Chipboard panel thickness 16 mm and parameters 3500 x 1750 cm.
  • Plywood 1525 x 1525 cm.
  • Lifting mechanism with gas shock absorbers.
  • Furniture fabric 5000 mm x 1500 mm.
  • Non-woven 5000 mm x 1600 mm.
  • Construction stapler with paper clips.
  • Bolts, nuts.
  • Foam rubber 10 x 3000 x 1000 mm, 2 sheets.

Image
Image
Image

It is necessary to draw and cut a chipboard sheet as follows: cut a partition 20 cm in height and install it between the pre-assembled bed frame. To make an orthopedic base from plywood (instead of it, you can take a sheet of solid birch): the thickness of the lamella should not exceed 20 mm, the width - about 7-8 cm. All lamellas should be the same size.

Cover the frame and head of the bed with foam rubber, then work only the head of the bed with textile upholstery. Make marks on the frame for attaching the hoist (4-6 bolts for each side). Wrap the fabric over the bed frame and attach the "lifters" that will connect the box and the orthopedic base. Screw the lamellas to the latter (this step can be done before, however, then the work on installing the gas lift will be more difficult). Connect the bed frame to the headboard, install plywood sheets on the bottom (floor).

Testimonials

Lift beds have a good reputation. Users note that furniture greatly saves space and literally removes seasonal clothes and shoes, children's toys or bulky home textiles from the eyes. Despite the manufacturer's recommendations about the "shelf life" of the mechanisms, the owners of such beds say that the furniture serves for more than 15 or even 20 years - the mechanisms do not break or creak if treated "well" from the very beginning.

You will learn more about double beds with a lifting mechanism in the following video.

Examples in the interior

These beds look good in the interior, especially in very tiny bedrooms.
