Currently, the problem of uneven walls is one of the most common problems in major renovations. You can solve it with the help of a popular material - drywall. If you want the finish on plaster substrates to look more aesthetically pleasing, they need to be further processed. To do this, you should make high-quality puttying of the floors.

Why is this needed?

Drywall is a very popular material, because it is very easy to work with it, and it is inexpensive. Even the most "ugly" uneven surfaces can be leveled with gypsum sheets. However, even after their installation, you should not immediately start finishing.

It is advisable to treat gypsum sheets with putty. Many home craftsmen are wondering why additional work is needed, because drywall already has a perfectly flat and smooth surface. Of course, such work is not always mandatory, but most often it is simply impossible to do without puttying.

Image

Putty is necessary in order to thoroughly close up various details that spoil the aesthetic appearance of the finish. These elements include sloppy joints between drywall sheets, corners and noticeable screw caps. In addition, puttying is simply irreplaceable if you plan to paint drywall surfaces.

Gypsum sheets only seem to be perfectly flat. In the process of installation and transportation, such building materials acquire new surface differences. At first glance, such defects may not be noticed at all, but after painting they will become conspicuous.

In order not to face such a nuisance, the gypsum bases must be covered with putty, then the uneven areas will be invisible.

Image

It is also necessary to putty plaster if you are going to decorate it with wallpaper. This is necessary so that after some time you can easily remove the old canvases without damaging the drywall, because without an intermediate layer, such a finish can pull the base material along with it when it is torn off. After that, you will have to completely change not only the wallpaper, but also the entire cladding, and this will take you much more time, effort and money.

Nowadays, in stores, you can stumble upon low-quality gypsum boards, which initially have uneven surfaces. As mentioned above, it is far from always possible to notice such defects, and you can only find defects in the process of repair work. In such cases, putty is also indispensable.

Varieties

There are several types of putties. Each of them is designed for certain conditions. Let's take a closer look at these finishing materials.

Image

Cement

Cement-based formulations are the most popular. They can be found in almost any store of building and finishing materials. Such mixtures boast excellent strength characteristics and moisture resistance. Thanks to these characteristics, they can be used in the design of rooms such as a kitchen, bathroom or toilet.

However, it is worth noting that cement compositions are not used so often to prepare gypsum walls for painting under normal conditions. This is due to the fact that such solutions over time give considerable shrinkage, and also differ in a longer period of complete solidification.

Gypsum

The second most popular are gypsum-based putties. Such mixtures have increased adhesion to gypsum plasterboards. In addition, they are distinguished by their versatility, fast adhesion and ease of processing.

Of course, gypsum fillers have their drawbacks. The main one is the fear of dampness and moisture. That is why such mixtures are not recommended for use in rooms with high humidity levels.

Acrylic

Polymer-based compositions are very popular, since they have practically no drawbacks. They combine all the best from other types of putties. True, such mixtures are not cheap, but their service life and other performance characteristics fully justify the price.

How to choose a filler?

Before proceeding with the selection of a putty composition, it is necessary to decide on the direct type of room in which it is planned to carry out finishing work. This fact directly depends on which putty is best suited and how long it will last under the conditions provided.

The finishing putty before gluing any type of wallpaper can be made using a special composition, but recently many consumers have opted for universal solutions, since the range of their application is much wider. Such products can be safely used for both the base and the top layer.

It should be borne in mind that different types of putty are suitable for different rooms.

The kitchen, bathroom and toilet tend to have high levels of humidity. For such environments, a special GVL is often used, which is not afraid of dampness and moisture. In addition, in these rooms, tiles are most often laid on the floors, so the putty should be chosen as wear-resistant, moisture-resistant and durable as possible. Polymer and concrete compositions are suitable for this description.

In a living room, a cozy bedroom or a children's room, conditions are considered to be more gentle, as these areas are dry. In such environments, it is perfectly acceptable to use a simple plaster putty.

In dry areas where higher temperatures are always maintained, it is recommended to use high quality polymers or gypsum mixtures. It is better to refuse concrete options, since in such circumstances they can give a noticeable shrinkage.

The most widespread and demanded today are inexpensive concrete and gypsum mixtures. Of course, they have their disadvantages, but there are also many advantages.

The best option is an acrylic putty. These mixtures can be purchased in large packs. Such products are relatively inexpensive and will last for several applications. In addition, if the mixture is universal, then it can be safely used in the decoration of a wide variety of premises.

Tools and materials

Plasterboard filling is not the most difficult process that almost any home craftsman can handle. However, before proceeding directly to the finishing work, it is necessary to stock up on all the necessary tools and materials. You will need:

  • a clean container in which you will mix the putty solution;
  • the putty itself (keep in mind that its consistency should be creamy);
  • a special construction mixer (you can use an inexpensive drill attachment instead);
  • narrow and wide spatulas;
Image
Image
  • rubber spatula;
  • reinforcing tape;
  • emery;
  • a special tool for grinding (it can be either electric or manual).

All listed devices and materials must be of high quality. Only if this parameter is observed, the result of finishing work will not disappoint you in the least.

Surface preparation

You should not start puttingty plasterboard base without proper preparation. It is this stage that is one of the most important in such work, therefore it is not recommended to neglect it. Consider all the stages of the preparation of the CHL foundation:

  • First, the walls must be cleaned of any dirt, dust and grease. Otherwise, it will simply not be possible to achieve high-quality adhesion of materials. In addition, you will need to get rid of the old finishing materials if they remain on the floors.
  • If previously wallpaper was pasted on the walls or paint was applied, then they can be removed with sandpaper.
Image
Image
Image
Image
  • Be sure to check the strength of the screws. If they protrude strongly beyond the walls and cling to the spatula, then they need to be screwed in more tightly so that the working base is more accurate and easier to finish.
  • After that, the cleaned surface of the base should be finished with a special primer. It is necessary for both wall decoration and ceiling decoration. Its layer will provide better adhesion of finishing materials. In addition, the putty will adhere much better and more reliably to the ground.
  • Next, you need to wait until the primer is completely dry. As a rule, this takes about a day. Only after this is it permissible to proceed to the direct puttying of the plasterboard base.

Application technology

When you prepare the surface of the base for the subsequent finishing, you can proceed to applying the starter coat of putty. You will need to carefully process the base seams and gaps. As a rule, starting putty compositions are characterized by a coarse-grained structure. Such coatings are ideal for pre-leveling.

Starting puttying must be done not from the very bottom, but from the middle of the seam being trimmed up and down. Thanks to this simple technique, you will be able to avoid ugly overlaps when laying the putty.

After that, to give additional strength, it is worth installing a special reinforcing tape. Similar items are sold in almost any building materials store. The installation of such an addition will ensure the reliability of the connection of all joints and seams, as well as the long service life of the finish.

You simply cannot do without a reinforcing tape if you plan to decorate drywall bases with wallpaper or paint with a paint and varnish mixture. It must be carefully put on the joint with the already applied starting layer of putty and well leveled. Try to avoid the appearance of any unevenness and protrusions when installing the tape.

After all the steps taken, you should wait until the putty is completely dry and hardened. Typically, these materials take 24 hours to dry. Of course, a lot also depends on the level of humidity in the room. If it is higher than the norm, then the putty mixture can dry longer.

When you putty drywall with your own hands, then after it is completely dry, you will need to carefully sand the surface. Do not forget that before applying the finishing layer, all seams and other elements must be as smooth as possible. In addition, it must be ensured that no details go beyond the boundaries of the bases.

After drying, the seams covered with putty must be rubbed with a special wet grout. Using this method, it will be possible to achieve a perfectly flat and neat base. After that, you need to let the grout dry completely. Next, the seams must be re-primed (buy special primers for drywall).

Only after that you can proceed to applying the finishing layer of putty.

Most often, the finishing putty has a fine-grained structure and a simple white color. Before applying this mortar, make sure that the plasterboard substrates are completely leveled and free of any defects.

Experts strongly recommend finishing plasterboard in a room with closed windows. Make sure that there are no drafts in the room. If you neglect these recommendations, then the putty layer on gypsum substrates can get ugly cracks. It will no longer be possible to get rid of them - you will have to redo the work.

According to experienced finishers, finishing putty is not necessary if you plan to decorate drywall surfaces with wallpaper or paint. For such purposes, it is quite possible to carry out only the starting processing of the bases.

If you follow such a simple step-by-step instruction, then puttying drywall walls will not take much time. … The main thing is to treat responsibly absolutely all stages of work, without neglecting any of them.

With the help of drywall, not only the walls in the dwelling are aligned, but also the ceilings. Moreover, beautiful multi-level boxes are often made from such materials, which look spectacular on ceiling ceilings, especially if they are supplemented with lamps that are suitable in style.

Image
Image

The technology for finishing the ceiling plasterboard is not much different from the wall options. However, there are some differences. Since the edges of the drywall sheets are cut to half the thickness at an angle of 45 degrees and are moved away from the floors by a couple of centimeters, the remaining gap must be filled with a putty mixture. In the process of drying, the solution will swell and expand the gap, firmly fixing the GCR sheet.

Thanks to this technique, it will be possible to avoid problems associated with the appearance of cracks and chips in the corners of the drywall.

The joints should always be filled with a filler, and then leveled with a short rule. To make the ceiling longitudinal seams more accurate and reliable, it is recommended to glue them with a reinforcing mesh. Next, the gaps must be filled with putty and carefully leveled. Do not forget about filling all the holes that remain from the fasteners. When the putty on the ceiling is completely dry, it is necessary to prime all seams with a high-quality primer with a special compound designed specifically for gypsum board.

When the primer layer is dry, it is necessary to glue the longitudinal and transverse joints between the boards using a special bandage tape. It must be glued to a special aqueous solution of PVA. If everything is done according to the instructions, the ceiling surface will be as smooth and even as possible.

Image

It should be borne in mind that The technique of plastering drywall on the ceiling requires gluing all corners and seams with a special bandage tape. It must be glued to the joints, which were previously treated with a special aqueous solution of PVA. In addition, these elements must be carefully leveled using a conventional trowel. All remaining air must be removed from the joints. As for the excess glue mass, they can be easily removed with an ordinary damp sponge.

When the bandage tape is dry, it can be covered with a finishing coat of putty. Its thickness should be about 1 millimeter. After that, you need to wait until the applied layer is completely dry. Then the joints must be covered with a putty mixture again in order to better level the ceiling.

Image
Image

When all layers of putty are dry, the ceiling can be finished with decorative materials. For example, paper (and not only) wallpaper or popular plaster. However, for other finishes, one more top coat must be applied. It should be thin.

The finishing layer of the putty is applied with a wide spatula. Typically, these tools are about 45 cm wide. The first layer should be applied as accurately and evenly as possible. Try to avoid variations in thickness. As for the second finishing layer, it is necessary to eliminate minor defects in the finish. Thanks to him, the ceiling looks more aesthetically pleasing and neat.

When the finish coat is completely dry, the ceiling must be sanded.

Finishing corners

Special attention should be paid to finishing the corners of plasterboard structures. To make the external elements more durable and reliable, there are special corners. Perforated drywall parts are made of plastic or metal.

For complex arched bases, plastic corners are most often used, since they bend and fit quite easily into a bend.

Metal corners are usually attached to simple outer corners. Of course, you can also use plastic options. In this case, the choice is not so fundamental.

Image
Image

First you need to make sure that the corners are of proper quality. Aluminum parts are often deformed during transportation. The damaged corner cannot be completely straightened and fixed on a straight surface. It is better to put aside such elements.

Cut the required number of corners. Then you need to put putty on the corners of the bases. Its layer should be 2-3 cm with a small tubercle. At this stage, you do not need to level anything. Apply perforated corners to plasterboard substrates with putty. Press them down so that the filler comes out through the holes.

Now you need to level the protruding coatings so that they cover the corners themselves. Next, you need to wait until the finished areas are completely dry. The second layer of putty should be applied after a couple of hours.

Image
Image
Image
Image

If you are decorating a two-level plasterboard ceiling, then you cannot do without special arched corners. However, there is another way to install such parts along rounded edges - using a stapler.

It is necessary to correctly finish not only the outer, but also the inner corners of the plasterboard structures.

First, they need to be glued with a serpyanka. It cannot be bent at a right angle in order to embrace two sides of the corner at the same time. Because of this, over time, ugly "wrinkles" will appear in this area. For each side, you need to glue separate elements of the serpyanka.

Image
Image

Next, apply the putty mixture using a spatula having a width of 20 cm. The putty should be pressed as tightly as possible into the cracks, if any in these areas.

If you are finishing a plasterboard ceiling, then the most difficult thing in this work is to seal the cracks around the perimeter of the ceiling, when the gap between the plasterboard sheet and the ceiling is about 2 cm. Installers often make such flaws, but you will have to correct such errors.

To begin with, the remaining gaps must be filled with putty without using a serpyanka. It is recommended to apply the putty mixture to the edge of the drywall sheet, so it will hold much more reliably. When all the materials have seized, you should cut off the excess parts with a knife. After that, it is necessary to attach the serpyanka and re-putty the inner corners.

Useful Tips

If you are determined to finish the plasterboard base yourself with putty, then you should rely on a number of helpful tips offered by experts:

  • The first thing that professionals advise to take into account is the need to purchase putty mixtures from well-known manufacturers. The most popular companies today are Knauf, Vetonit, Sheetrok. Their products boast excellent quality, and it is not difficult to work with them.
  • Pay attention to the consistency of the putty. The composition should be liquid, resembling sour cream.
  • If you do not want to prepare the putty mixture on your own, then you should purchase a ready-made version. Similar compositions can be used for finishing immediately after purchase. However, it should be borne in mind that such a product cannot be stored for a long time - this is how it differs from dry mixtures.
Image
Image
  • It is very important to properly putty the screws on the substrates. It is recommended to do this crosswise - this way the putty fills the heads of the fasteners better.
  • Watch the location of the screws. It will be better if they are drowned in drywall. However, there are times when they are twisted too deep. Then they should be unscrewed, and new self-tapping screws should be installed nearby, and then all holes should be putty.
  • Do not underestimate the importance of the primer in such finishing work. It must be evenly distributed over the entire area of the plasterboard sheets. Experts recommend using special water-soluble compounds - they are absorbed into the top layer of the base, but do not penetrate into its inner part.
  • Experts do not recommend using fiberglass mesh in such finishing works. Currently, there are many alternatives to such parts that are of better quality and more reliable.
Image
Image
  • A special fine-toothed trowel is best suited for reinforcing corners.
  • It is very important to choose the right corners for the plasterboard structure. If you are decorating an arch, then metal parts will absolutely not suit you. Choose more plastic pieces, for example, plastic corners.
  • Remember to properly prime the corners of the plasterboard structures.
  • When finishing the ceiling, it is recommended to sand with the lights on. Then you can immediately notice any defects and errors on the ceiling structure.
Image
Image
Image
Image
  • Pay attention to the quality of the plasterboard substrates. There should be no sheet separation at the joints. Such flaws lead to excessive accumulation of air in the damaged areas, which will then negatively affect the decorative finish.
  • Be sure to clean the seams between the drywall boards from any dirt and dust. The fasteners must also be clean. Otherwise, the putty will not adhere firmly enough to such a base. Over time, she can completely fall off from him.
  • If you do not plan to glue wallpaper on drywall bases or paint them with paint, then only rough puttying will not do. You will also need to produce a quality topcoat.
