"Pleated" curtains were invented in Germany quite a long time ago, but they still do not give up their positions. This type of curtain has a number of differences and advantages that distinguish it favorably from all other types.
What it is?
It is extremely simple to give a description of pleated blinds. They are a canvas of dense material, folded with a frequent accordion, and from a distance do not differ from classic horizontal blinds. However, upon closer inspection, it turns out that we are not seeing individual slats, but solid material. Pleated curtains are suitable for almost any window size and shape. They can be hung both on plastic windows and on wooden ones, while there will be no problems with the fastening of curtains.
Corrugated blinds are available in different versions. They are also made from different materials and can be either plain or colored. This opens up a huge scope for imagination regarding different interior design of rooms. Blinds "pleated" perfectly protect from the sun and heat from the street, not allowing the room to get too hot on a hot summer day, and also protecting the room from burning out.
The distinctive features of this type of blinds include the fact that they can be washed directly at home (of course, if we are not talking about paper models).
Corrugated paper curtains can be made independently, while they will serve no worse than purchased ones, and will fit into the situation much better. However, fabric options still need to be purchased. They are made of 100% polyester, treated with a special impregnation, which prevents dust and dirt from entering the fabric. Thanks to this protective coating, the blinds are easy to care for.
When folded, they take up very little space - about 4 centimeters in height. At the moment, it is the most compact device for decorating window spaces.
The design of the blinds is a sheet of material folded with an accordion, attached to aluminum profiles or fastened with ropes. The control is carried out using different techniques. The simplest is control with a handle. On one side, the blinds are attached to the window, and on the other, a handle is attached directly to the lower strip of the blinds. With it, you can adjust the degree of opening of the panels.
Operation with a rope or chain is more suitable for windows that are much higher than a person's height. Such a system is familiar to us from the classic vertical blinds, which are controlled by the rope method. The blinds equipped with an electric drive are suitable for hard-to-reach windows, which cannot be opened and closed manually. In this case, the pleated curtains are adjusted using the remote control. At the moment, such motors are quite silent, so they will not cause any particular inconvenience.
A distinctive feature of pleated curtains is that they can be opened both from top to bottom and from bottom to top, which makes them very convenient for installation on the ground floor. And access to sunlight is open, and the room is protected from the prying eyes of passers-by.
Despite the similar design, there are several subtypes of pleated blinds:
Day-night blinds, which are very popular today, are often installed in bedrooms, living rooms, and children's rooms. They consist of two fabrics of different density, with independent control systems. One of the fabrics allows you to provide a good dense blackout, and the second simply protects from the eyes of strangers. When installing the "day-night" system, they are usually limited only to it, without additionally purchasing classic curtains (tulle and curtains). There is a "but" here: these systems are only suitable for installation on rectangular windows, they have not yet been adapted for shaped openings
Corrugated curtains on an arched window do not have an opening function, since they are made in the form of a fan. However, at the moment this is the only way to arrange such a window, while protecting the room from the sun. Pleated blinds are also suitable for interior partitions. In this case, the roller shutters will play a decorative role, the only functional load will be greater separation of spaces from each other
Electric blinds are suitable for framing skylights and skylights. It is noteworthy that tension models are suitable for inclined windows, while they do not sag thanks to a special fastening system. Such a look as vertical "pleated" cannot be called traditional.… They are controlled mainly by hand and are used to decorate small windows. Self-adhesive blinds are attached directly to the frame. There is adhesive tape at one end of such a curtain, so that they can be installed at least from the top of the window, at least from its middle
Also of interest are the so-called "corrugation" designs… They are made of two panels, fastened to each other in a special way. Between them ropes are fixed, with the help of which control is carried out. The air trapped between the canvases allows for a good heat-insulating effect: in summer they protect the room from overheating, and in winter they do not let cold air through
The most popular today are fabric "Pleated". One of the reasons for the frequent choice of this material is that fabric blinds can be washed, although not all. Blackout curtains and metallic coated fabrics will lose all their properties after washing… For the rest, washing ordinary corrugated curtains is possible in water at temperatures below 30 degrees with the addition of a gentle pH neutral agent. Dry the folded fabric, from time to time straightening the blinds so that the "lamellas" do not stick together. The next most popular are paper models. They are chosen for framing windows not only in houses, but also outside, for example, on a balcony.
The advantages of paper include wear resistance, a large selection of color variations and low cost.
Paper "pleated" can be made from thick wallpaper left over after repair, or you can buy ready-made. Basically, paper models are operated manually with a pen. Aluminum options are not very popular for a number of factors. Firstly, they heat up very quickly, which is why they cannot be installed on a dormer or skylight. Secondly, conventional horizontal aluminum blinds are much more practical than corrugated ones. Thus, fabric has the greatest functionality today. It can be selected for all types of windows, equipped with an electric drive, it is easy to maintain and often has hypoallergenic properties due to the dust-repellent impregnation.
Pleated blinds have a huge range of sizes. They can be used to decorate both tiny and very large windows, for example, panel windows. The width of the corrugated curtains varies from 25 centimeters to 2.8 meters. In height, they can reach 4 meters. The folds laid in different models can be both wide and very narrow - from 1.5 centimeters.
The dimensions of the blinds are selected depending on the dimensions of the window and on where exactly the panels will be mounted. The corrugations that are glued directly to the glass itself will be much narrower than those that are attached to the window opening.
Mini blinds are installed on small decorative windows, for example, attic or located in the walls of the bathroom. Here you can choose both in favor of classic horizontal models and vertical ones. Both those and others will look equally advantageous. It is not forbidden to supplement the "pleated" with sliding curtains. For example, the combination with long curtains, on the contrary, is welcomed in styles such as Modern or Minimalism.
The honorable first place was deserved, of course, by the German "pleated" blinds. Almost all fabrics supplied from Germany for these designs are of high quality and a wide range of colors. The production of pleated blinds was also picked up in other parts of Europe. Great Britain has been particularly successful in this. Manufacturers such as Designers Guild, Watts, Byron & Byron supply the best today fabrics for pleated curtains. They are of high quality, do not fade in the sun, perfectly keep their shape and wash well.
Italy did not stand aside. The company representing her Casa Valentina produces not only fabrics, but also fastening elements. A special Italian character can be traced in the colors and ornaments of the materials, so when choosing, be sure to consider whether this style of blinds is suitable for your interior. French brand Hope and Phillips supplies luxury materials for sewing curtains and the production of pleated blinds. The colors offered by this company are most suitable for Baroque interiors, as they are distinguished by an abundance of gilded trim elements. However, with the proper skill, you can find suitable blinds here too.
When ordering fabric models in the workshop, you will certainly be offered a choice of fabrics. Remembering the names of the listed brands, it will be easier for you to make the right choice.
How to assemble?
Depending on which model and with what type of control you have chosen, the assembly method also depends. A typical kit includes a curtain, 4 housings, 4 clips, 4 brackets, 2 handles, 4 brackets, 4 covers, 8 screws and 4 double-sided tape plates. It is enough to assemble this set to be able to install pleated blinds. Installation on a plastic frame is done without drilling. Fasteners are installed at the top and bottom of the window using double-sided tape. You need to install the body and the retainer on them, and finally the cover is installed.
Installation of a structure on a wooden frame is generally similar to fastening to a plastic one, but it is done with screws. So, the fasteners must be fastened to the frame not with double-sided tape, but with screws. Then you should repeat all the same steps as when working with a plastic window. These options are suitable for installing blinds on blind windows. It is better to entrust the installation of curtains to a swing-out frame to a professional, since the fastening mechanism in this case is a little more complicated than the one given. A professional should also be involved in the installation of electric pleated blinds, since it is important that the control system on the remote control is properly configured.
How to remove: instructions
Dismantling the pleated blinds does not present any particular difficulties even for a person who is far from the world of technology. To remove the corrugated shade for cleaning or replacement, follow these steps:
- Assemble the canvas and secure it folded.
- Remove the covers covering the mount structures.
- Pull the clips out of the housings.
- Carefully detach the shade from the guides.
That's all. The pad is ready for further cleaning or replacement.
Examples in the interior
Below are examples of the use of pleated blinds in interiors with a similar analysis of each of the design solutions.Replacing familiar curtains with modern functional corrugated blinds is a great idea, especially when it comes to decorating a window with an unusual shape. Here the rectangular windows are lined up in a semicircle.… Such a choice of design for them allows us to focus on the unusual arched structure of the wall itself, into which the windows are mounted. The color is matched in one shade with the classic eco-interior of the living room.
Pleated blinds are often chosen as a solution for window decoration in Loft style interiors. They look stylish, minimalist and are also very functional pieces of furniture. When thinking over the design of an office, it is important to find a solution in which nothing will distract from work. Corrugated fabric curtains without unnecessary details are an excellent choice. Here are the curtains of the corrugation, matched to the window of an unusual shape, as well as for a slanted rectangular window.
The choice of deep red is not accidental. Passing the sun's rays through themselves, the blinds help paint the whole room in warm colors, and in such a kitchen the appetite immediately increases. Moreover, the predominance of warm colors allows you to give the room a cosiness and a homely atmosphere.
This image shows an example of the use of wide pleated pleated curtains. For the interior of this bedroom, not a solid curtain covering the panoramic window was chosen, but several. This allows the lighting zones to be adjusted more precisely. Also, corrugated curtains in this case are used not only for protection from sunlight, but also for zoning space. Here is a good example of using pleated sheaths for a winter garden. Ceiling models are usually equipped with an electric drive system that makes them easy to operate.
The selected white color allows you to gently diffuse sunlight entering the room.
Multi-colored corrugated curtains are often used when decorating a nursery. This room is suitable for both a boy and a girl. The cheerful colors will surely appeal to children. Pay attention to the blinds in this particular case. Two canvases of the same texture are installed here. When stacked on top of each other, they will allow you to almost completely protect the room from the sun's rays, and also provide the effect of thermal insulation, protecting the room from drafts. The arched window is framed by a fan-shaped "pleated". This solution looks very stylish and interesting and is suitable for both bedroom and kitchen design. Despite the fact that the blinds in the semicircular compartment cannot be opened, the window as a whole does not look bulky. On the contrary, with this design it seems more interesting.
The "pleated" curtain favorably emphasizes all the unusual design.
The "day-night" option is an excellent solution for the bedroom, allowing you to get a good night's sleep during the day and at night. The unusual design of the curtains will definitely attract attention, so you need to keep this in mind when creating a design project.
Advantages and disadvantages
If you look at the reviews of people who have installed pleated blinds, there are much more pluses in them than minuses. The advantages include the following qualities:
- Low price… The purchase of curtains and installation require significantly less investment.
- Versatility… This type of blind can be matched to any shape and size of windows, including dormers, panoramic or tiny attic openings.
- Easy to care for. Vacuuming the blinds is usually sufficient to restore them to their original cleanliness. However, fabric models are also allowed to be washed infrequently with the use of a gentle detergent, so as not to wash off the special impregnation from the fabric.
- Saving space. Pleated blinds take up very little space both when unfolded and folded. This is extremely important when choosing curtains for a small room.
- A variety of species. In addition to the usual pleated blinds, there are double pleats on the market, and day-night models, and blackout, not to mention the abundance of various colors and ornaments. In addition, the width of the folds can also vary depending on the preference of the customer.
- Illumination control. Due to the fact that the curtains can be opened both from bottom to top and from top to bottom, it is possible to create such lighting and in such quantity, which is necessary.
Consumers talk about the following disadvantages of corrugated models:
- Pleated curtains are not suitable for large spacious rooms, they look ridiculous in them.
- For some people, the disadvantage was that the blinds are attached directly to the frame or glass of the swing window, and when you open it wide, it swings open with the blinds, leaving the room "bare".
