Sleep is a natural human need. The bed and its attributes have accompanied humanity since the distant cave times. The quality of bedding, be it a pillow or blanket, bedding, mattress, has not changed too much since then. The functional feasibility of these items has always come first. Among the numerous inventions of mankind that have survived practically unchanged to this day, cotton mattresses can be distinguished for a comfortable sleep.
Features and Benefits
An ordinary wadded mattress, on which our grandmothers still slept, and today is a simple and reliable companion to the kingdom of Morpheus. The simplicity and reliability of the product is ensured by the peculiarities of its manufacture, design, or rather, the lack thereof. This, in general, distinguishes this product from other types of mattresses, more modern: polyurethane foam, spring, orthopedic, - it can be listed for a long time.
But is it worth wasting time and money, if an elementary comfortable rest can be obtained from an unpretentious, but very nice cover made of bright natural fabrics with dense filling with a hypoallergenic filler.
In the absence of a bed, it can be used directly on the floor (is that why mattresses are usually sold in furniture stores). Cozyly soft and warm for a child, strong and hard enough for an adult, quilted wadded mattresses have not lost their relevance and popularity today.
Regardless of the weight of a person, this type of product retains its shape, showing elasticity without springs. The product is quite flexible: it folds well into a weighty roll, convenient for carrying, transportation. Polyurethane, polyurethane foam, and even more so, spring ones are unlikely to be able to give such a compact form.
Budget prices for this type of bedding attributes also contribute a lot to the demand nowadays. If necessary, you can make a replacement for a new product without much damage to your wallet.
Thanks to all these features, wadded mattresses are still widely used not only at home, but also in public institutions: hospitals, hotels, boarding schools, army barracks. The product is functional and economical for temporary stays that do not require special comfort: in hostels, hostels. It is also pleasant to stretch out on the shelf of a reserved seat carriage of a long-distance train, covered with a faithful companion - a cotton mattress filled with fresh linen, falling asleep under the measured sound of wheels.
How does it work?
The structure of this ancient bed attribute has practically not changed since the time of Peter I. Then they were first brought to Russia from Germany and Holland. Durable springless bed-size fabric cover is densely stuffed with cotton wool. Then it is quilted together with filler in a certain way, reminiscent of a carriage tie.
The perimeter of the cover is stitched on all sides at a short distance from the edge. The resulting sides form the frame of the product.
This allows, after filling the cover with a cotton filler, to keep the shape of the structure, giving it strength and at the same time flexibility. The cover of the cotton mattress is not removable, it is sewn up tightly. The product is quilted (dived) over the entire surface with a special quilting with peaks. It secures the case with the filler and improves the characteristics and quality of the product.
Compliance by manufacturers of these products with the standards of the current GOST maintains the standard level of product quality.This ensures successful competition with numerous modern models of the bed attribute, contributes to its relevance.
The standards set for the filler of the product give it not only softness, splendor, but also elasticity, low thermal conductivity.
The quality of the cover material - its density, set in the range of 110-190 g / m, - does not allow dust to pass inside and cotton fibers outside. All characteristics of the material for the cover are regulated by the current GOST 7701-75, as well as GOST 11039-2015. The latter document replaced the widely used 11039-84, but with no major changes. For example, the fabric, as before, should not exceed the formaldehyde emission standard, wear out, shed.
The through-stitching with peaks (“buttons”) increases the service life of the product, if their number (minimum - 16 peaks) meets the standards. Improvement of production processes has increased the guaranteed service life of this type of product up to five years. In practice, subject to the rules of care and operation, it can be doubled. For this, as well as to facilitate the care of the product, you can optionally purchase an additional removable cover, choosing the size of the product.
The main filler is, as can be seen from the name of the product, cotton wool. This is a special non-medical cotton wool. The current GOST 5679-91 “Cotton wool for clothes and furniture. Specifications”defines the quality characteristics of the filler used in the product. White cotton wool is made up of a mixture of short and long cotton fibers. They prevent the mass from falling into lumps and caking. It is the mixture of fibers of different lengths that gives the finished product splendor, softness, elasticity.
White wool mattresses do not cause allergies when used, unlike polyurethane and polyurethane foam.
Typically, mattress manufacturers write the word GOST on the labels. This means that the filling is white cotton wool made from 100% cotton (sewing, Premium or Lux). The PB label means regenerated fiber, that is, recovered from the remnants of weaving materials. PB can be white, but this is a different quality.
The fibers, well processed on special equipment, are stuffed into covers of standard sizes from cotton fabrics: teak or coarse calico, polycotton. As a result of this process, they acquire a standard weight corresponding to the dimensions (from 6 kg for a product 60x190 cm, up to 13 kg for 160x190).
Which is better - foam or cotton?
Choosing the best product from the above two is a matter of taste. Each type of product has advantages and disadvantages. Foam rubber is synthetics, cotton wool is a natural product, it will not cause allergies. Foam rubber is aging rather quickly: it turns yellow, crumbles into fine dust when destroyed. In this case, dust penetrates through the surface of the cover to the outside, which is not conducive to the health of the user. Cotton wool is more durable. It is not for nothing that this type of mattress often wanders around the families of relatives and is successfully passed on by "inheritance" to the next growing generation.
On the other hand, foam rubber products are lighter in weight than wadded ones. But they also sag more easily, wadded more elastic, hold their shape better with a large user weight. Their prices are comparable, but wadded ones are still more economical, even if the filler is of the Lux class, and the cover is marked "100% cotton".
Cotton mattresses are subdivided into:
- one and a half;
They are manufactured according to the same dimensional grid. All sizes of the product are standard and correlated with the parameters of a person: his height and shoulder width.
GOST determines the dimensions of products: parameters, weight. Size chart for single items:
- 90 x 200;
- 80 x 200;
- 80 x 190;
- 90 x 190.
Double mattresses are double width:
- 160 x 200;
- 140 x 200;
- 200 x 200;
- 160 x 190;
- 140 x 190;
- 190 x 190;
There are so-called one-and-a-half: wider than single beds, but already double:
- 120 x 200;
- 120 x 190.
As you can see from the dimensional grid presented here, all mattresses, like beds for them, come in two length standards - 190 cm and 200 cm (for very tall people - above 175 cm).
Children's mattresses are much narrower in width, shorter in length (60x120, 80x160). But their length can reach the size of a standard adult product (70 x190).
The thickness of the products also varies: from thin (4-8 cm) to 18 cm for premium products. The thicker, the higher the mattress and the better the spine feels. But the cost of such a product will also be more expensive.
This product is widely represented on the Russian market by both domestic and foreign manufacturers. Imported models are usually made in China. It is preferable to choose a product from Russia, since during its production the norms regulated by GOSTs are observed. In domestic production, compliance with regulatory sanitary and hygienic requirements, quality control, in contrast to foreign models, is monitored. Their quality criteria may not coincide with domestic standards.
With all the simplicity of the device of a cotton mattress, the danger may come from the quality of processing of the filler, the composition of the dyes for the cover.
The bright, attractive colors can hide toxic and allergenic materials used in the manufacture. The filler can be treated with unknown reagents. Products are often offered "from the manufacturer" - small workshops. Here you should be more careful, since it is more difficult for small industries to comply with all the requirements of GOST and the quality of the raw materials used.
How to choose?
Choose a wadded mattress using organoleptic properties. You need to touch, smell, maybe even sit on it (if the seller doesn't mind). The product should be pleasant to the touch, smooth, without lumps, and have a neutral odor. Extraneous chemical odors or moldy odors emanating from the product should alert you. They signal possible irregularities during the production of the product or storage. The cotton mattress cover must be clean, free of dust and stains. It is worth checking the integrity and quality of the seams, the presence of gaps in the filler fibers.
It is recommended to examine the product labeling, to clarify:
- the size;
- filler composition;
- cover material;
- indication of GOST.
It is even possible, even necessary, to ask the seller for documents on the compliance of the goods with sanitary and hygienic standards. This is especially important if the product is purchased for children. Only then can you be sure of the high quality and safety of the product.
In the event that a small repair of the cotton mattress arises during operation, it is made independently.
You can clean up dirt with homemade detergents.
When choosing them, one must remember about the possibility of subsequent contact of the surface of the product with the skin. Shampoo, whipped into lather, will deal with stains. It is easy to sew up a loose seam, apply a patch to the leaky fabric of the cover. Even if you have sewing skills and a typewriter, it is not so difficult to re-run the case with the filler itself.
It can be costly to send the product to a specialized workshop for restoration. It is easier and more economical to buy a new cotton mattress. Many problems can be avoided by periodically drying the mattress in the fresh air. Cotton wool is very hygroscopic and can dampen. It is also recommended to turn the product over to the other side from time to time in order to avoid knocking down lumps and caking of the filler.
Advantages and disadvantages
Like any product, this product has its positive and negative sides, benefits and harms it brings. On the one hand, cotton mattresses:
- provide comfortable rest and healthy sleep;
- as a natural product, safe for humans, do not emit toxic substances, allergens;
- environmentally friendly (harmless to the environment during operation and disposal) for the same reason;
- compact in storage and easy to transport;
- easy care does not cause any particular problems;
- budget price available to any buyer.
On the other hand, there is negativity: wadded mattresses do not have orthopedic properties.
They cannot provide a comfortable rest of the same level as modern mattress products with springs from new materials belonging to the orthopedic group.
The filler (vata) does not follow the contours of the body accurately enough, so it will not be possible to completely relax. Prolonged stay on a sufficiently hard bed leads to numbness of various parts of the body. You may experience pain in the cervical or lumbar spine.
With insufficient drying and ventilation, it is possible to provoke the development of fungal organisms, the waste products of which can lead to physical discomfort (at least headache, memory loss, attention), cause allergic manifestations, especially dangerous in children.
With a huge variety of mattresses on the modern market, there are few reviews of these products. Basically, they relate to the problem of choosing children's product models.
It is gratifying that many parents focus on cotton mattresses, trying to avoid an allergic reaction in their child. They also care about the state of posture of their beloved child. At the beginning of life, a bed that is too soft does not relax the muscles and leads to a curvature of the spine. Families with many children show particular interest in this product, having convinced themselves from their own many years of experience in its practicality, cost-effectiveness and obvious benefits for the health of children.
Judging by the reviews of concerned parents, the individual reaction of the child's body to the composition of the synthetic components of the models promoted by marketers may not coincide with the declared properties of these products. This is where the old and kind, soft and warm cotton mattress, on which more than one generation of Russians has grown up, comes to the rescue.
