  • Constructed from such types of folding and folding mechanisms, which are distinguished by their simplicity of design, this significantly increases the life of the product;

Roman shades come in three varieties:

  • Classic;
  • Cascading;
  • Frameless.

The principle of operation of these curtains is the same: when lifting, the canvas moves vertically upward and gathers in folds. But the external characteristics of classic, frameless and cascading curtains differ radically.

Classic curtains, both unfolded and folded, form an even canvas; they look very laconic and elegant in simple interiors with smooth lines. The curtain of classic curtains is equipped with cords.

Cascading, unlike classic curtains, both in folded and unfolded position, form cascading lines or draped waves. Such models are more suitable for provincial interiors such as Country, Retro or Provence.

The third type is frameless curtains, which differ from their counterparts by the absence of cords. This is a simplified version of Roman blinds, instead of rigid inserts, the canvas is laced with thin threads. When folded, the frameless curtains form graceful frill-like arcs.

The elements

Roman blinds are very simple, their design consists of only a few parts:

  • Cornice;
  • Lifting mechanism;
  • Curtains;
  • Decorative elements (not available on all models).

The main elements of the curtain are a fabric cloth, which folds into horizontal lines when raised, and a cornice, the device of which differs from the type of fastening of the entire structure to the window.

In addition, Roman blinds have a lifting mechanism, with the help of which the fabric is folded and decomposed.

Cornice

Methods of fastening Roman blinds differ in the material and design of the cornice, its location and lifting mechanism. The most common types of curtain rods are either wall-mounted, or fixed to the ceiling or window frame.

The cornice of Roman blinds is of three types:

  1. Classical. This type of construction is the most common; its length ranges from 150 to 180 cm, which corresponds to the dimensions of standard window frames.
  2. Mini cornice. The dimensions of the structure differ in their small dimensions, otherwise they are the same classic types of cornices.
  3. Beveled. These structures are designed for window openings of non-standard shapes, they can be installed both on the wall and on the ceiling, the difference is that they are in the form of triangles, rhombuses and can be installed at an angle relative to the floor covering.

Lifting mechanism

All types of lifting mechanisms for Roman blinds can be divided into three groups:

  1. Manual control;
  2. Mechanical;
  3. Electrical.

Hand operated Roman blinds are equipped with a rope mechanism. This is the simplest and most common type, it is easy to use, but only suitable for those blades weighing less than 5 kg. In order to fold or unfold the curtain with a rope mechanism, you just need to pull on the cord.

The mechanical hoist is equipped with a special shaft that is driven by the same chain. Cords are wound on the lifting shaft and the curtain is folded. This design, in turn, can withstand about 7 kg. A minimum of effort is required to control the mechanism.

The electric cornice also consists of a chain and a shaft, but the mechanism is driven by an electric drive. In order to fold or unfold the blind, simply press the button on the remote control.

Curtains

Roman blinds are made from natural materials such as linen, cotton or canvas. The curtain is glued to the pipe, which is located at the base of the cornice. By type, fabric canvases are divided into frame and frameless. The first type is equipped with cords, the second, in turn, does not contain a rigid base and when folded, a lambrequin is formed, somewhat reminiscent of a frill. Popular double roman blinds usually consist of two different types of fabrics. For example, the inner curtain is made of blackout fabric, and the outer curtain is made of more light-permeable materials.

Decorative elements

Roman blinds can be supplemented with decorative tips, perekids and lambrequins, and the cornice can be easily decorated according to the style of the upcoming holiday, for example, New Year or Christmas. You can also use beads, braid or fringe as decorations. The cornice and lifting rails of the mechanism are decorated with decorative elements in the form of corners, chains or appliqués.

The presence or absence of jewelry depends on the design of the structure and the individual requirements and preferences of the owner.

Dimensions (edit)

The size of the window opening affects the type of cornice and the way it is attached. In order to choose the best mounting method, it is necessary to take into account the size of the window. For ordinary window openings of standard sizes, classic types of curtain rods are suitable, they are attached to the wall and do not take up much space.

Overall window openings should be covered with Roman blinds with mechanized lifting mechanisms, otherwise it will be quite difficult to adjust the position of the canvas.

For small window openings, the best option would be to choose mini-curtain rods that are attached directly to the window structure. Thus, the curtain fabric fits snugly against the glass, and the window sill space remains absolutely free. It is an ideal solution for small spaces, as this type of curtain rod saves space and does not clutter it up. It is recommended to attach mini-curtain rods to a plastic window; on other types of profiles, the structure is not fastened so securely.

For windows with non-standard geometric shapes, the fastening method is developed taking into account the layout and individual characteristics of the window opening. For example, the curtain rod of beveled Roman blinds is set at an angle, ideal for roof windows.

If all measurements are calculated correctly, then the structure will fit perfectly into the window opening

How to choose?

When choosing roman blinds for your home, there are several important aspects to consider:

  • The type of eaves and lifting system directly affects how much weight and load the structure can withstand.
  • You should not choose structures with a cornice length exceeding 4 m. This often leads to the fact that the lifting mechanism and the cornice are deformed and fail too quickly due to excessive loads. It is better to place such curtains on two cornices, distributing the weight.
  • The same rule applies to curtains with long canvases. Curtains and crossbars longer than 3 m put stress on the lifting system.
  • Fasteners also affect the strength of Roman blinds. Standard curtain rods are attached with two brackets. More massive structures are complemented by a third fastener, which is installed in the center of the cornice.
  • The design and characteristics of the curtains directly depend on the interior and the purpose of the room in which these curtains are planned to be hung.

Roman blinds for the kitchen are selected taking into account such properties as the resistance of the fabric to dirt, the ability to absorb odors and ease of cleaning. For the kitchen and dining area of the structure, you should choose models that are easy to use and care for.

The wide assortment presented by the manufacturers opens up a lot of space for the implementation of all kinds of design ideas. Specialists in the design of premises give some simple recommendations for choosing curtains:

  • It is not recommended to hang canvases with large prints in small rooms;
  • A horizontal geometric pattern visually expands the space, and a vertical one lengthens;
  • The textile design of window openings should correspond to the style of the interior;
  • The installation of dark and dense curtains is not recommended in kitchen and dining areas, such models look best in bedrooms or living rooms.

For recreation areas, the design of the curtains is selected taking into account the lighting and the type of room. In living rooms, color and texture solutions of furniture, finishing materials and curtains should be combined.

It is popular to hang curtains with a color tone that is darker than the rest of the decor. If the window openings are on the sunny side or overlook a busy street, then it is better to purchase curtains made of thick fabrics.

But in the case when the curtains perform an exclusively aesthetic function, then translucent lightweight models will be an excellent solution for the home. Light and translucent canvases add airiness to the interior, they will be an excellent solution for small spaces.

It is not recommended to choose catchy tones for the bedroom; it is better to give preference to soft and calm color schemes. They will help create a comfortable area for relaxation and sleep. Window decoration can be combined not only with pieces of furniture, but also with other textiles, for example, a blanket or pillows matched to the curtains harmoniously fit into the style of any interior.

Both for the bedroom and for the living room, organza, bamboo, tapestry, velvet or blackout canvases are most often used as material for Roman curtains. These materials have a high level of opacity, so they are supplemented with translucent canvases.

The owner of double curtains can either open the window completely or curtain it with a thick fabric or light curtain. Double roman blinds are also perfect for the bathroom, if you choose models made of moisture-resistant and opaque materials.

How to reduce?

A Roman blind consists of a single piece of fabric, which is equipped with longitudinal inserts for stretching the textile. There are times when it is necessary to change the length of the curtain, for example, if it is decided to outweigh the product to a window with different dimensions. It is possible to do this with your own hands if you have several readily available tools:

  • First, you need to determine the desired length using a measuring tape, mark measurements on the structure, it is better to first detach the textiles from the cornice;
  • The next step is to change the length of the lifting cord, it shrinks exactly the same length as the textile.
  • Before cutting off the excess pieces of fabric and cord, it is necessary to measure the window opening and the curtain itself again, then retreat 2-4 cm from the first mark on the fabric in order to make a twist and hide the cut line. Thus, two lines are obtained - one for the cut, and the other for the hem;
  • Then you can start getting rid of the extra centimeters of fabric. This must be done carefully, in a straight line and using sharp scissors;
  • Next, you will need assembly glue to create a "blind seam". The piece remaining after the measurement is wrapped on the wrong side and fixed with glue. It is better to use wood or textile assembly glue. But if you wish, you can not glue, but sew on a textile hem;
  • After the glue has dried, you can attach the curtain to the curtain rod.

How to fix it correctly?

The curtain rod of Roman blinds can be attached in several ways:

  • Fastening to each window sash with a separate curtain. This is a very practical option, since there is unhindered access to the window sill and it becomes possible to open and close the sashes. Most often, such mounts are equipped with magnets so that the curtain fabric fits snugly against the window.
  • Fixing to the window frame - one of the most common, but not very functional ways of attaching Roman blinds. With free access to the window sill, it is no longer possible to open the window sashes or vents.
  • Installation between the walls of the window opening. As a rule, standard windows have a niche that forms a window sill and additional walls, and it is to them that the cornice is attached. In this case, the distance from the window frame is chosen purely at the request of the owner, but at the same time taking into account the width of the niche.
  • Fixing to ceilings or walls. The cornice is mounted directly into the wall or ceiling. The convenience of this method of fastening is that when the curtain is raised, access to the window sill and window is opened.

In addition to the various methods of fastening the cornice, there are also several types of textile fabric installation. There are:

  • Fastening the curtain to the cornice with Velcro. This method allows you to easily remove the canvas and attach it back, which is very convenient if the location of the curtain involves its frequent cleaning of dirt. In addition, you can simply replace such a canvas if it becomes unusable or the owner just wants to change the interior.
  • Hinged curtains or drawstrings look a bit like standard curtain models. Such canvases can be hung on a regular cornice, but they mainly have a rope lifting mechanism.
  • There are Roman blinds without cornices. Adhesive tape is immediately attached to the textile fabric, and then the structure can be fixed directly to the window frame.

It is not difficult to assemble the structure on your own and hang the Roman shade. When buying a product in furniture stores, the kit includes a whole set of basic fasteners and instructions with a detailed installation process. The installation method depends on the individual characteristics of the cornice and the lifting mechanism.
