In order to choose a suitable curtain fabric, you need to understand its types and features. Some of them are suitable for residential use only, others for non-residential use. The appearance of the room and the service life of the curtains depend on how correctly the fabric is selected.

Requirements

In addition to aesthetic appeal, curtain fabric should have a number of important differences:

  • The fabric should last a long time. For some rooms, this point is very important.
  • It must be suitable for the room in texture, and also have a suitable weight so that it can be safely hung on the cornice.
  • It should be easy to look after.
  • It should not be flammable.
  • Advantage if the fabric does not absorb odors.
  • Often it is necessary to create folds or folds in the fabric, in which case its elasticity is important.
  • Should not fade in the sun (especially for curtains on windows on the sunny side).

Based on the listed parameters, you should make your choice.

Depending on the room, this or that property of the fabric is important to a different extent. For example, for decorating a bedroom, it is not at all necessary to take care of the resistance of the fabric to combustion, but in the kitchen, on the contrary, this property comes to the fore.

In addition to the above, the composition of matter plays a significant role. Natural and artificial materials decompose in a number of ways and can also be used in different rooms. In some rooms, preference is traditionally given to curtains made of artificial materials, for example, in the bathroom.

Properties and characteristics

As mentioned above, materials are divided into natural and artificial, depending on the composition. In addition to these two groups, there is a third - blended fabrics. It includes materials, natural and artificial fibers in the composition of which are woven. Today, many designers recognize blended fabrics as the best choice.

In terms of their qualities, artificial fabrics are sometimes even better than natural ones. They are easier to care for, strong and durable. However, natural ones have a number of advantages: they are hypoallergenic, do not electrify, look very luxurious, but not defiant.

The price difference is sometimes quite large, but most often good artificial materials are close in price to natural ones.

The same applies to mixed fabrics: due to the merits of the material, manufacturers sometimes "wind up" prices.

However, each of the individual types of fabric has different qualities from others. Fabrics differ in structure, fiber composition, pattern, as well as the type of weave. The strength of the fabric depends on it, as well as the presence or absence of the face and the wrong side. When choosing fabric for sewing curtains, pay attention to woolen (linen) and satin (satin). They differ from each other in the density of the weave: the woolen fabrics are quite dense and durable, and the satin ones are smooth, soft, elastic.

Natural

Natural fabrics are popular despite their numerous analogues among artificial materials. Natural fiber curtains are hung in the bedroom, in the nursery, in the small living room. There are several popular types of fabric from which curtains are usually sewn:

  • Cotton. Cotton fiber is used everywhere. It is woven as an independent cotton fabric, and other types are supplemented with cotton threads. It is found in many different configurations: both thin cotton fabrics and rather dense fabrics are made. Cotton is destroyed by exposure to sunlight, thinning and becoming less durable, so cotton curtains are recommended to be made lined. It is easy to wash; stubborn dirt can be removed by soaking the curtains. Cotton can be ironed when the iron is heated to maximum.
  • Satin. As a rule, satin is made of cotton and differs in the way it is woven. Due to this, it has a shiny smooth surface, but remains quite durable. In terms of its characteristics, it is in many ways similar to cotton. Satin is machine washable and should only be ironed on the wrong side.?

  • Linen. It is a specially selected fiber obtained from the plant of the same name. Linen fabrics are completely different - from the thinnest veil material to dense upholstery. Flax has a number of advantages over its natural counterparts. In addition to being easy to care for, it does not accumulate static electricity and is air permeable and has the ability to disinfect air, which makes the choice of this fabric ideal for an allergic bedroom. Linen has an interesting checkered texture due to the different thicknesses of the threads used to create the fabric. Since linen fabrics fade in the sun, it is advised to sew curtains from them on a lining. Iron the linen at the maximum iron temperature.
  • Silk. Natural silk is the thread that Bombyx mori caterpillars - silkworm butterflies - give off. For the manufacture of fabric for curtains, they mainly use wild silk, which remains after the main production of dress fabric. Silk products are incredibly smooth yet durable. Silk has ideal fire-fighting characteristics as it does not burn, but melts when exposed to fire. Silk is washed in the delicate wash mode with cold water, dried by throwing it over a horizontal bar, and only completely dry fabric is ironed without using steam with a non-hot iron. When exposed to heat, silk loses its luster and gloss.
  • Wool. The hair of animals (mainly sheep) is widely used in the production of fabrics. Wool protects the room well from drafts, sunlight, extraneous noise, while allowing oxygen to pass through well. Woollens are also delicate with cold water, as they tend to shrink. As a rule, ironing is not required.

Artificial

Artificial fabrics are easy to care for, they do not fade in the sun, do not wear out and do not deform. There is a fairly wide selection of various artificial fabrics for sewing curtains that look quite decent on the windows. Basically, these are curtain fabrics, but there are also curtain fabrics:

  • Taffeta. This fabric reflects light very well, which is why designers love to use it in sunny rooms. Although the fabric is quite dense, it drapes easily. Taffeta is a rather “capricious” material that requires delicate care: since it “shrinks”, it is washed in cold water with gentle detergents.
  • Viscose. The fabric is very similar to silk, but it is more resistant to light and heat. Often the fabric is made with polyester splashes, so it does not wrinkle and is easy to wash.
  • Polyester. Contrary to stereotypes, high-quality polyester will last more than one year. It is very easy to maintain, wear-resistant, resistant to various environmental influences. A huge range of products is produced from it. Polyester voile can be found just as often as thick curtains. However, such curtains should be washed in the delicate wash mode with cold water and dried while hanging. As a rule, it is enough to go through the iron for 1-2 heating stages in order to completely smooth out accidental creases on the fabric.

  • Organza. Hard and prickly material is often chosen for curtains. Organza can be matte and shiny. Both are easily draped, creating interesting large folds. Organza curtains are light enough, but do not fly apart at the slightest breath of wind. To take care of them, it is enough to wash them in a typewriter, without wringing out, and immediately hang them on the cornice - the fabric dries very quickly.
  • Jacquard. A fabric with a convex pattern matching the color of the main canvas or another shade looks very interesting and elegant. Jacquard curtains are a modern alternative to brocade curtains. Most often, when decorating matter, natural themes are used. Jacquard curtains are best maintained with a vacuum cleaner and not damp cleaned. If the dirt is heavy, you can take the curtains to a dry cleaner.

For roll

Roller blinds are traditionally made from artificial materials impregnated with a special compound that provides them with density. The weaving of linen or lavsan threads will be very effective on roller blinds.

Also, roller blinds can be made from natural materials, which are also impregnated with a sealing compound. Linen or satin are great options.

The choice of different models of curtains is extensive. Nevertheless, they all have one thing in common: wear resistance, the ability to protect well from sunlight, resistance to external influences, ease of care.

Interesting modern materials

In addition to traditional materials for window decoration, completely new ones are also used. It is worth dwelling on them in more detail:

  • Grid. It is a knitted openwork fabric. The abundance of colors and weaving options made the net a favorite replacement for the already boring tulle curtains. Mesh curtains can be matched to any interior, both traditional and fancy modern.
  • Reaper. Wrinkle-free curtains from the header will complement the interior of the hall, living room, bedroom, adding grandeur and gloss to the room. The material is extremely practical and easy to clean. The interesting structure of the fabric is distinguished by an abundance of spontaneously created creases that do not repeat, so it is better to make the curtains from the header in one color.
  • Rogozhka. This double-sided fabric has a very coarse texture with a sparse weave. The mattress has been known to mankind since ancient times, but few housewives use it in interior decoration. The styles popular today, on the contrary, are credited with using rough canvases, so that the matting has firmly taken its position in the list of current curtain materials.

You will learn more about how to choose a fabric for curtains in the following video.

We select depending on the purpose of the room

Not all rooms can be fitted with classic fabric curtains. Often, only blinds are suitable. It is necessary to take into account the peculiarities of each of the fabrics before choosing it for the decor of the room.

Rooms are divided into residential and non-residential. It is appropriate to supplement residential ones with curtains or curtains, sometimes decorated with lambrequins. You don't need to do this in non-residential rooms. In them, the curtains should not serve as decoration, but cope well with their functional role: to protect the room.

With the help of curtains, you can add comfort to the room or, conversely, make it cooler; visually enlarge the room or reduce it; to give the home a neat, modest look or defiantly pompous.

So it's important to think about what effect you want to achieve.

Living room

To decorate the hall, dense curtain fabrics are traditionally used in combination with light curtains. The material of curtains and curtains should be of two colors, not necessarily contrasting ones. For light curtains, a shiny organza or an embroidered voile will do.

Mostly curtains are made of materials such as gabardine, jacquard, velvet, satin. Jacquard fabrics look very rich, soundly, but are not suitable for decorating small rooms. The same goes for soft dense tissues. For example, velor fabrics will perfectly emphasize the size of a large living room, while at the same time isolating it from unnecessary noise and drafts.

For a lambrequin, it is better to choose the same fabrics from which the curtains were sewn. If this is not possible, select at least similar material colors.

It is ideal to have two sets of curtains for the hall: winter and summer. A summer set should be easy to clean and machine washable. For example, linen, organza and similar fabrics are great for summer. For the winter, choose dense fabrics that will give a feeling of comfort and security.

Velvet fabrics with a special soft coating would be an excellent choice.

Bedroom

For window decoration in the bedroom, it is best to choose lightweight natural materials. A person spends a third of his life in the bedroom, so it is very important that the curtains do not provoke his health problems such as allergies (artificial material) or asthma (material that easily collects dust).

It is also possible to use BlackOut curtains. They are completely opaque thanks to a three-layer fabric structure that prevents sunlight from entering the room. Blackout will appeal especially to those who work at night and have to sleep during the day.

When choosing curtains, look at silk or linen, depending on the style of the room. Such options are expensive, but you cannot save on curtains for the bedroom. Curtains made of mesh knitted from cotton yarn will be an interesting solution. They will protect your privacy while not blocking light from entering.

The best fabrics for curtains in the bedroom are linen, cotton, silk, soft wool.

Kitchen

In the kitchen, on the contrary, it is not advised to buy curtains made of natural fabric. Synthetics are much more suitable if we are not talking about the space above the stove: then it is better to choose linen roller blinds or roman blinds.

Short curtains made of organza or polyester will perfectly fit into the interior of the kitchen. They are very easy to care for, so they can easily withstand frequent washings, and in which case they can be easily replaced with new ones without much damage to the budget.

Short classic curtains with a chintz lambrequin will look cute and rustic. Chintz is easy to wash, but it absorbs odors, so it is only suitable for those kitchens that are equipped with a good hood and ventilation system.

Children

For the nursery, as well as for the bedroom, preference should be given to natural materials. It is advisable to choose fabrics with a pattern so that the child is interested in looking at the pictures on the windows.

Translucent fabrics are a great solution. If you can, you can hang silk curtains. However, this is often a waste of money: curtains in the nursery need to be washed quite often in order to completely get rid of dust and possible allergens.

Organza made from natural fibers or a veil will compete with silk. It is much easier to care for them, they tolerate frequent washings and dry quickly, while the organza practically does not require ironing. There is a huge selection of all kinds of colors and patterns on the market. You can also order a photo print by yourself choosing an image.

We take into account the style features

To choose the right curtains, you need to remember about the style of the room. Be sure to rely on the overall design solution of the room.

You can make the curtains a focal point. To do this, choose an unusual fabric and type of fastening. For example, a muslin of two colors on the eyelets will definitely attract attention.

Please note that not every fabric is suitable for a particular style. For example, satin or silk curtains are a hallmark of the Baroque style, but such curtains cannot be hung in a minimalist room.

Remember the colors too. The color of the curtain fabric should be in harmony with the surrounding space.

To prevent the fabric from completely merging, if you are decorating the window in a shade similar to the walls, choose curtains that are darker or lighter than the main color.

Top manufacturers

Elite fabrics for curtains are produced by European countries: Italy, Spain, England, Sweden other. English and Swedish fabrics are distinguished by a high price, Spanish fabric is a little cheaper, but the quality is not inferior.

In recent years, Turkey has pleased with its material. A rich selection and affordable prices have provided Turkish fabrics with an honorable place among the leading manufacturers.

Russia also offers a wide range of products. Unfortunately, prices for Russian fabrics are slightly lower than for foreign ones, but in terms of quality they cannot always compete with imported counterparts.

Care

Curtains do not always need total cleaning, sometimes it is enough to just tidy them up to give a special atmosphere to the whole room.

The curtains should be cleaned regularly. If you do not remove dust in time, it can stick into the material, as a result of which it will permanently lose its neat appearance.

You can use a vacuum cleaner to remove dust from the curtains. Set it to the lowest setting and clean the curtains with a furniture brush. If you want to be sure to avoid dust getting in the air, take a damp gauze and wrap it around the end of the vacuum tube. Next, just process the curtains. Change the gauze to clean gauze regularly to avoid smearing dirt on the curtains.

Periodically heavy curtains need to be taken to dry cleaning in the future.

On average, it is enough to carry out a professional cleaning procedure every six months. It is good if you have several sets of curtains in your arsenal. So you will save them from quick wear, and from time to time you will be able to refresh the interior.

If the curtains can be washed at home, we recommend that you purchase a special curtain cleaner. It, unlike ordinary washing powder, will not damage the structure of the curtain fabric, will not clog it, as a result of which the material will remain breathable and will not lose its shape.

Curtains should not be washed with other items, especially wearable items. If any of this fades, the curtains will be irreparably damaged.

Whatever the manufacturer says, you should not use a drum spin or twist the fabric. Also, you can not use any devices to accelerate the drying of curtains: hair dryer, dryer, and others. Allowing the material to dry naturally will minimize the risk of damaging it. If the structure of the fabric is damaged, it will become very fragile and can easily tear in the future.
