Stained glass

Currently, there are many different lighting fixtures, but there is no limit to perfection. Stained glass lamps are gaining more and more popularity. There are several types of techniques for their manufacture:

  • glasses are soldered to each other;
  • heat up, melt and stick together;
  • the forged form is filled with many small pieces of glass, the product is created by hand;
  • the outline of the ornament applied to the glass is trimmed with a special material, after which the pattern itself is painted over with paints of different colors;
  • a picture is printed on the film and glued to the glass sheet, as a result a stained-glass window is obtained;
  • the glass sheet is processed with sand (under the pressure of the air flow), before that it is covered with a protective film, leaving only those places where the pattern will be free - after using this method, the stained glass window acquires a matte shade;
  • Tiffany technique. It is worth considering it in more detail.

A bit of history

Brand founder - Louis Comfort Tiffany… He was the son of Charles Lewis Tiffany, the owner of a world famous jewelry house. Louis Tiffany studied art in Paris. The young man was very impressed by the Chartres Cathedral, or rather, by the stained glass windows. Since then, this glass has become the subject of his admiration. Louis traveled half the world, studying its features and properties.

Returning to America in the late 19th century, Tiffany founded his workshop. It employed about three hundred people. Among the clients were well-known politicians, writers, entrepreneurs. The workshop staff participated in the design of the White House, the Cuban president's apartment.

Louis Comfort introduced a new type of glass - "favrile" ("flaming"). It plays with colors so much that it resembles metal.

These models were exhibits at the Paris exhibition and received the Grand Prix. The manufacturer created stained glass windows, bijouterie, lamps, thanks to which stained glass later not only adorned chic houses, but also appeared among ordinary people.

Manufacturing technique

The peculiarity lies in the fact that each detail of the product is wrapped in copper foil, then placed on a sketch of the pattern - and only then soldered. Thanks to this, the drawing turns out to be complex, ornate and voluminous, and the lampshade itself is light. However, such perfection of technology was not achieved immediately. Initially, the bezel strips were made of lead. This made the plafonds heavier, made them rough and deprived of volume.

As for glass, at first Louis Tiffany generally used ordinary bottles and flasks, but even they looked interesting.

Then he started experimenting. Thanks to this ingenious inventor, the following types of glass became widespread:

  • Iridescent: metal dust is poured onto the uncooled canvas, and it gets a beautiful shimmer.
  • Folded: warm raw materials are deliberately distorted, getting folds on it.
  • Opalescent: "Cloudy" glass. This effect is provided by tin or burnt bone. Its severity can be adjusted by changing the amount of impurities.

Interesting fact

Tiffany worked in Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles. For such products, a special type of ornament is characteristic - natural: dragonfly, lotus, broom, various flowers. Recently, however, scientists have established that the idea for the design did not belong to Tiffany at all, but to Clara Pierce Walcott, who worked for him. Before that, the designer created ornaments with geometric patterns. Clara was an art school graduate. She worked at Tiffany's workshop for 20 years. It was she who became the author of the patterns. "Dragonfly" and "Narcissus", which are the most famous today.

It is worth mentioning the price as well. Real lamps Tiffanycreated by branded firms in compliance with all technological rules are quite expensive. But on the other hand, they differ in originality, because you can make them to order, having come up with a drawing yourself.

All such products are divided into 4 categories:

  • Ceiling: they are usually placed in the lobby. They are massive and attract attention even when turned off. For their manufacture, glass of light colors is used so that they better transmit light.
  • Tabletop: for them, it is better to choose plafonds, extended at the bottom, so that the radiation goes to the table.
  • Floor standing: they will create a cozy atmosphere in your living room. A forged metal leg, on which the lampshade is located, gives such products a spectacular effect.
  • Wall mounted: they will favorably emphasize the interior. Such products are fixed in the bedroom or hallway. They are varied in shape: in the form of a flashlight, flat, protruding. For the sleeping area, pastel shades of shades are great, they will contribute to relaxation.
