In order for the curtains to look decent in the interior, they need high-quality fastening. In this case, a profile cornice becomes a frequent choice. The profile itself can be made of different materials and supplemented with various decor details, from adhesive decorative film to rhinestones.

Features and Benefits

To describe the profile cornices, it is rather difficult to pick up epithets. They do not carry any aesthetic load, playing only a functional role. However, they cope with the role of fastening for curtains perfectly, remaining one of the most popular options. Today, more than 70% of consumers choose profile cornice systems.

Profile cornices can be made of various materials that are not particularly sophisticated. Plastic or aluminum - that's the whole choice. Their price does not vary much depending on the material, but they handle the load differently. Aluminum is more durable, but plastic is lighter. Therefore, plastic models are often preferred for stretch ceilings.

The covering of the profile structure is usually white, regardless of what it is made of. However, there is a wide range of decorative materials on the market: baguettes, decorative adhesive tapes, coatings. The cheapest option is to order a profile of the desired color. In this case, its price will not change significantly, however, if desired, it will be more convenient to hide it under a lambrequin or puffs.

The adhesive tape imitates various materials: wood, metal, and so on. It looks quite realistic, and sometimes it is not immediately possible to guess what the model of the curtain holder is actually made of.

Baguettes can also be decorated with various materials, including eco-representatives (wood, leather), bohemian options (rhinestones), for classic interiors (carving, gilding).

Due to the fact that the profile is made of flexible materials, it is suitable for the design of various curly windows, niches, extensions, and the unpretentiousness of aluminum and plastic allows you to mount the cornice not only in the living room, but also in non-residential street: in a bathhouse, a gazebo, on a veranda or terrace.

The advantages of such structures include their flexibility, versatility (suitable for both light curtains and heavy curtains, ease of installation (the profile can be attached independently, regardless of the chosen placement option), functionality, durability, low weight. existing types of ceilings also makes it one of the favorites.

An unattractive appearance sometimes does not play a special role if it is planned to install a cornice in a niche or under a molding. In such cases, on the contrary, the small size of the structure allows you to hide it as efficiently as possible, while you do not need to make a large ledge while maintaining the height of the ceilings.

Varieties

First of all, profile options are divided according to the material from which the profile is made. Aluminum ceiling models are a favorite classic, especially when it comes to attaching heavy curtains. Plastic is inferior in its characteristics, however, tire consoles can often be found on fashionable stretch ceilings.

The number of rows may fluctuate. If one-row-three-row models are no longer surprising, now there are models with more than four rows. The number of guides varies only depending on the designer's imagination: there can be curtains with two lambrequins, several curtain canvases or multilayer tulle.

Single-row plastic options are selected for hallways, kitchens, children's rooms. In such rooms, a tulle curtain alone is often enough, so there is no point in spending money on an aluminum model of the cornice. At the same time, the three-row cornice allows you to hang a veil, brocade and a soft lambrequin with swags or ties. This design is an invariable classic for halls, living rooms and bedrooms.

Models also vary depending on the design of the sidewalls. Recently, they often make a decorative edge so that it looks more or less presentable, but there is an alternative: a profile with end curvatures. Both options are perfect for a profile that covers the entire space of a wall with a window, and for one that decorates a window opening.

There are different types of profiles depending on the curtain opening mechanism:

The first and most common is manually controlled, when the curtains are manually pulled apart

  • The second option is a little more complicated - it is cord control. It is made using a chain, like on blinds. The systems allow you to symmetrically push the curtains in different directions or direct them only in the direction of the chain attachment.
  • The third kind - auto. In this case, the system is equipped with an electric drive, and the position of the curtains is controlled using a remote control. It can be portable or wall-mounted.

If the cornice is purchased for decorative purposes, it is equipped with a baguette - a bar that covers the area where curtains and cornice meet, as well as guide elements.

Convex carved wooden, flat with rhinestones, narrow metal strips have their fans both among professional designers and among ordinary buyers who decided to make repairs.

Fittings

Depending on the quality of components, brand and country of production, the filling of standard packages may also change, not to mention the fact that such nuances affect the price. The standard configuration of a profile cornice usually includes the following components:

Guide profile up to 6 m long can be straight or curly. Usually, curved models are deformed to the desired shape even at the time of ordering, but there are also structures that should be bent only at the time of installation itself (for example, made in Japan). Materials vary depending on the shape. For example, almost any bend can be modeled from aluminum, but it is not suitable for fastening to fragile structures

Runners, used for fastening and moving curtains, are made mainly of plastic. There are two models of runners: roller and slide sliders. The first type is used for attaching heavy curtains, the second for light curtains. Curtains of medium density can withstand any of the types. There is also a third type, which is mainly equipped with a cornice on automatic or cord control - a master glide. It helps to close the curtains as tightly as possible

  • Hooks are attached to the runners, with the help of which the curtains are suspended. Hooks can be made, like sliders, in plastic or metal. In terms of strength, the former are not much inferior to the latter, however, metal models are often better suited to the design of curtains and the profile cornice itself.
  • Feet serve to fix the curtain fabric on the cornice. They are often used with arched or trapezoidal structures to prevent curtains from sliding out of the rails.

Bracket (caliper) it is used to fasten the eaves to the surface. Depending on the severity of the curtains, universal mounts or power ones are selected. The number of brackets varies depending on the length of the curtain rod and the weight of the structure including curtains. Usually, the distance between the rails and brackets does not exceed 5 cm, however, if it is necessary to install a structure with a large indent, it is recommended to delegate the work to professional craftsmen

Components for the cornice should be chosen of high quality, regardless of the room in which you plan to mount a solid structure. If it collapses, it can lead to damage not only to curtains, ceilings or walls, but also to the surrounding environment.

How to choose?

To choose the best option from all the existing ones, you should focus not only on the price. Of course, as a rule, higher quality models and more expensive ones, however, Russian manufacturers produce products that are not inferior in quality to samples from Italy or Japan. Check the manufacturer ratings and read reviews to form your own opinion on this issue in the future.

You also need to decide what material to buy the structure from. For classic multi-layer curtains, of course, the best choice would be the model made of aluminum, however, the plastic rail looks almost invisible, merging with the ceiling.

Think in general about what you want your curtains to look like in the end, and based on this idea, decide about the number of rows. For modest options "curtain + curtains" two-row is suitable, for pompous "curtains + curtains + lambrequin" - three-row. A special aluminum model is available for Japanese panels, so be sure to ask your sales assistant to show you samples.

You should not focus on the aesthetic appearance of the structure, it is much more important what functionality it has and how long it will last.

How to install?

Depending on where exactly you plan to mount the profile cornice - on a wall, in a window opening, on a window frame or on a ceiling - a different set of components will be required. A huge advantage of profile models is their lightness, thanks to which they can be mounted to any ceiling: plasterboard, monolithic, tension or wood.

For those models that are designed for heavy curtains and multi-row structures, ceiling mounting is recommended. Standard weight curtains can be hung on the wall curtain rod.

As a rule, a set of components for a curtain rod is already included in the standard kit, but if the curtain rod is long enough, calculate the number of brackets for fastening correctly. When mounting on a wall, the step of fastening should be 1-2 meters, depending on the severity of the curtains. For the ceiling, the fixing step varies from 15 to 40 cm.

You will also need the following tools:

  • ladder;
  • puncher;
  • screwdriver;
  • pencil and tape measure;
  • dowels with self-tapping screws;
  • building level.

First, take measurements from the window. Please note that if the measurements of a classic window can be carried out independently, then for a figured window (bay window, trapezoidal, etc.), it is better to entrust the taking of measurements to professionals.

Depending on how exactly you plan to position the cornice, its length also depends. So, for installation in the entire wall, you should leave gaps of 10 cm on each side, therefore, the length of the cornice is equal to the width of the wall minus 20 cm. For location only above the window opening, add 20-45 cm to the width of the opening on each side, so that the curtains were easy to move. Fastening to a window sash requires choosing a profile that is 1 cm narrower than the sash. To fix the profile to the frame (note that installation is possible only to a wooden frame), you should choose a model 5-6 cm narrower than the frame.

Proceed with the installation of the curtain rod on the wall using the following instructions:

  • Remove the platbands from the cornice.
  • Step back 2.5 cm from the window opening and mark the attachment points for the brackets at this height. It is advised to start marking from the center. Mark the points with a pencil, then drill the holes for the fasteners. To install plastic mounts, you need to make two holes, for metal mounts, three.
  • Insert the dowels into the holes. Then, using a screwdriver, fix the brackets with self-tapping screws in the dowels.
  • Place one of the tips on the cornice, then insert the runners into the guides. Install the remaining tip.
  • Hang the curtain rod from the brackets.

For installation on a ceiling, in a window opening or on a frame, the fastening scheme is similar, with the exception of the indentation distance.

So, for fixing to the ceiling, the brackets are fixed at a distance, which is calculated by the formula: protrusion of the window sill / heating radiator plus 5-6 cm (correction for curtain assemblies). When choosing a frame or sash mount, the windows are guided by the center of the frame or the top edging of the sash.

How to care?

The maintenance of the profile cornices is extremely simple. The main thing is to remember that wet cleaning is contraindicated for these structures. Being under the ceiling, the cornice physically cannot get very dirty (except in unique cases), so it is enough to wipe it with a dry cloth from time to time.

Cleaning with a vacuum cleaner is also possible. If you walk down the cornice with a furniture brush, you can effectively get rid of the dusty layer.

If dirt gets into the corners of the structure, you can carefully remove the tips, wipe the cornice and put the tips back. Also, if possible, "blow through" especially dirty corners with a vacuum cleaner.

It should be noted that it is not necessary to remove the curtains to clean the curtain rod, however, it is highly likely that the dust from the curtain rod will settle on them. To avoid this, it is recommended to clean the curtain rod before each wash of the curtains. So your window decoration will stay fresh and neat for a long time.

Testimonials

Based on the experience shared by the owners of such products, we can say with confidence that in the overwhelming majority of cases it turned out to be positive. People noted that both plastic and aluminum profiles served well, did not deform, and the installation did not cause problems. Several people had problems with operation, as they incorrectly calculated the frequency of the step for installing the brackets; the problem was resolved when the problem was corrected.

For many, a big plus is that the curtains slide silently on such a cornice. Some of the respondents noted the possibility of ordering a model without joining, but with a solid profile. In general, people were satisfied with the purchase and recommended it for use.
