Features of the

At the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries, electricity was a novelty. Incandescent lamps have just become widespread. It was fashionable to have electric lights in the house. Lighting devices of those times took over a lot from their predecessors - kerosene and oil lamps, candelabra with candles, chandeliers. The development of technologies also played a role: then plastic and many other modern materials had not yet been invented. Metal, glass, wood - the main materials for the manufacture of lamps in those years.

Today we call retro-style lamps the lighting fixtures of the first half of the 20th century.… They are steeped in the spirit of modernism and change - it was with such lamps that future revolutionaries built their plans, the underground workers discussed the operations and the poets of the Silver Age wrote their poems. They have a special romance. To acquire them, it is not at all necessary to chase after antiques, especially since genuine samples cost fabulous money. Today, both mass manufacturers and fashionable interior designers produce retro lamps that are quite affordable for a modern city dweller.

In some interiors, it is advisable not only to hang lamps, but also completely make semi-antique wiring. On sale there are retro wires (thick twisted cords that do not hide in the walls, but are attached from the outside), ceramic sockets and even modern Edison lamps of appropriate shapes with a luminous spiral inside. Modern retro lighting is used in cafes, bars and restaurants with a corresponding theme. It is perfect for youth clubs, hangouts. Antique lamps are suitable for loft, country, provence, modern styles. They can decorate both hallways and corridors, and living quarters.

Models and shapes

Behind the scenes, it is customary to divide retro-style lighting fixtures into two categories - loft and vintage. The former are more utilitarian: they were created not for beauty, but primarily for convenience. As a rule, this is a lamp in a socket, supplemented with a simple lampshade (shade), or completely "naked".

Vintage lamps are the choice of representatives of bohemia. They are intricate, complex and beautiful. Socket lamps can hang from the ceiling with long cords or chains. You can hang them pointwise, for example, over a long table above each seating position, or you can group them in one place - you get something like an impromptu chandelier.

Another old form lamps - plate. By the way, it is still used in kitchens. The lamp is hung on a cord or chain, and the cartridge is, as it were, under an inverted plate. It scatters the light and directs it down into the room. An incandescent lamp can be open, or it can be covered with a glass bulb or a shade of interwoven metal rods.

Also, just one lamp can make a small sconce on the wall or a table lamp on a stand. Pay attention to the cartridge - it is brass and quite massive. May have shades: black (as if forged or cast iron), bronze, "antique gold"… Its understated sheen is perfect for creating a retro vibe.

It is important that such a sconce must necessarily rotate in different directions, redirecting the light flux to where you need it.

A slightly more complicated option is a shade made of metal rods or a glass bulb. Ceiling, wall and table lamps can be decorated in this way. An incandescent lamp is placed in a "shade" made of simple metal rods (reminiscent of anti-vandal shades in the entrance). They can be simple (oval) or slightly more intricate, reminiscent of songbird cages. In any case, they look very simple, as if they were made not for beauty, but only for the safety of the lamp.

The glass bulb looks unassuming too. Flasks can be closed or open like shades, of various shapes and sizes.

A popular type of retro light fixture is lanterns or lamps. These are the shapes of shades made of metal and glass, reminiscent of a street lamp and an old kerosene stove. Ceiling lamps, wall sconces, floor lamps, table lamps can be decorated in this style. There are models with metal shades of various complex shapes - they resemble retro, but rather, they are more related to a modern loft. In particular, the spider chandelier.

Vintage lighting fixtures are often circular in shape. It can be a shade close to the ceiling, richly decorated or painted, a round chandelier with crystal trimmings in large quantities. Metal fixtures in oriental style also look vintage, especially if you put a "burning candle" lamp in them. Of the table lamps, the most beautiful in this style are lamps with a textile shade, which is decorated at the bottom with tassels or pendants made of stones or beads. A floor lamp can be decorated in the same way.

If you want to create the atmosphere of a medieval castle (it is especially appropriate in the hallway), you can hang torches on the walls. They look very original if the body and wall mount are made of solid wood and complemented by a metal rim.

A good option for different styles is a luminaire from a bar. This model looks luxurious if there are exposed beams on the ceiling. An oblong wooden block can serve as a base for built-in lamps, or lamps can be wound around it on long wires / chains. Such a model will decorate the ceiling in modern loft interiors, as well as in "medieval" halls.

Most of these models will be united by such a detail as an open-eyed lamp. If in modern chandeliers and sconces, the light bulb is hidden in the shade of the original shape, then here it is in plain sight. It is advisable to install special retro lamps in "antique" lamps. They come in the following forms:

  • round;
  • oblong and narrow, like chemical flasks;
  • in the form of a burning candle;
  • pear-shaped.

The tungsten filament in them can be laid in loops, herringbone or spiral. The flasks can be transparent, or they can be sprayed with different colors. They are usually manufactured with a standard E27 base, which means they can be used in most modern luminaires. The main disadvantage of such lamps is their high power consumption. In fact, this is the most common incandescent lamp that heats up and wears out quickly enough. It is fire hazardous and more expensive than usual. However, no other lighting fixture provides such a warm, soft light that promotes relaxation and ease.

As for the external wiring, then beautiful twisted cords are available for purchase in any color… White, beige options, a shade of cappuccino, dark brown or even red - you need to select it based on the color of the walls. Components are also purchased for the wires: special ceramic insulators (shaped like plugs on an old electric meter) and ceramic sockets. They have a vintage look, a notch for a thick twisted cord, but "accept" modern wide plugs of electrical appliances.

Use and interior

Retro light will be appropriate in various interiors:

The most popular today is, of course, loft. Artists and writers decorate their houses with it, they decorate bars and entertainment establishments in this style, they love it very much in photo studios. Many young people today are trying to recreate this style in their apartments. Warm retro light is ideal for walls with exposed masonry where bricks and all chimneys are visible

Depending on the purpose of the room, the lamp itself is chosen. For a large hall, a design on a canvas is appropriate, for a corridor - a sconce, for a kitchen - spotlights on long cords or spots.

For a classic interior a vintage chandelier is perfect. This is a good option for a living room or kitchen-living room. Round with hanging glass or crystal, it will give the room a touch of bohemian and chic. It would be appropriate to hang such a model in a large bedroom, decorated in a luxuriously classic spirit: carved furniture, expensive finishes, stucco molding on the ceiling. For a small bedroom, you can pick up a small crystal chandelier. It is desirable that the place where the chandelier is attached to the ceiling in such interiors stands out with special round stucco tiles: this will give the ceiling a finished look

For rooms in country or provence styles you can pick up very interesting options for lighting fixtures. Provence will be complemented by white chandeliers with openwork details, neat little shades and hanging beads. Copper (as an option - copper color) or forged heavy chandeliers with candle lamps will look great. A retro floor lamp or a table lamp with a wood base and a lace lampshade is perfect for a bedroom. If the hallway is made out in the Provencal style, sconces are definitely suitable. Lamps of various types on a wrought iron or wooden base are suitable for country styles. A luxurious room, for example, in the spirit of a Swiss chalet, will be decorated with a large forged chandelier with a large number of candle lamps

Vintage lighting fixtures are often used by designers when decorating rooms. in the American style. It is close to the classic one, but they use massive heavy furniture of simple geometric shapes, and the rooms are functionally zoned. A large and luxurious chandelier can be placed in the living room, but the rest of the rooms are best zoned with light, using sconces and other small lamps

A medium sized wrought iron chandelier will perfectly decorate an American bedroom with a traditional high bed.
