To choose lamps for the bathroom, you need to take into account the characteristics of the room, including stylistic ones. Having figured out all the variety of shades, it will become much easier to create a unique design of a bathroom and toilet using lighting. You also need to calculate the required number of fixtures to create a sufficiently bright light.

Features of the
When choosing lamps for the bathroom, one must take into account not only the characteristics of the lamps themselves, but also the room. It turns out to be not so easy to install the right lighting in the bathroom due to the high humidity and constant temperature changes.

When planning the wiring of light for the bathroom and toilet, it is imperative to insulate well not only the lamps themselves from water, but also the wiring.
The question of the occurrence of mold is also relevant. Some of the materials used in chandeliers are easily contaminated with fungus, resulting in an unattractive look. Therefore, an important indicator for bathroom fixtures is resistance to all kinds of similar troubles.

Since the installation of such systems requires considerable costs, it is important to install durable models that will not become unusable. Ideally, the luminaire should last without replacement until the next repair. In addition, a high-quality model will not lose its attractive appearance.
In modern bathrooms, it is customary to install not only an overhead light, but also local lighting.
A mirror is usually equipped with lighting elements, since it often plays the role of not only a mirror for washing, but also a make-up one. It is worth remembering that within a radius of 60 cm from the sink there is an area most susceptible to splashing water, therefore, for installation within these limits, it is necessary to select the most protected lighting devices.

The protection of a particular model of the luminaire is indicated on its body using the IP index. This index shows how resistant the luminaire is to the ingress of dust or water.
Luminaires with the following indexes are suitable for installation in the bathroom:
- Within the bath or shower cabin, fixtures with the highest IP65 index, which means that the model is protected from directed jets of water, should be installed.
- Within 60 cm from the sink and 60 cm from the bath or shower, it is allowed to install lamps with a lower IP44 rating, protected from water splashes.
-
Elsewhere in the bathroom, a sufficient degree of protection is IP23. In such cases, the luminaire is protected from dust and water vapor, but it will not withstand the effects of moisture directly falling on it.

You should not buy models of bathroom fixtures without an IP rating, as this often means that the products have not passed the mandatory certification.
Varieties
A different design of lamps is chosen for the bathroom, which is determined by the style and size of the room. A properly selected lighting fixture can completely transform the proportions of a room, making them more attractive and harmonious.

Today, ordinary point built-in models in the form of a "tablet" are in great demand. They are installed in the ceiling, and for small bathrooms, such samples are enough to create light.

Design samples with a special configuration or color look more unusual. The designer model can be on-board or built-in, however, it is worth noting that there are much more design options for patch spotlights.

There are also more familiar models, for example, a sconce with an outlet and a switch on the body itself. The use of luminaires with exposed wires is discouraged as damage to the insulation could result in serious electric shock. For safety reasons, professional builders and designers recommend hiding all wiring in the walls or ceiling, leaving only one shade with a light bulb outside.

In large bathrooms, in places where moisture does not get into, you can put a floor lamp. It will illuminate especially dark areas, creating the necessary level of brightness in the room.

Speaking of large bathrooms, one cannot fail to mention the ultra-fashionable trend - the use of pendant chandeliers in the design. They can be on a bar for height adjustment, overhead or ordinary suspended. As a rule, this innovation is only suitable for modern interiors. The rooms, complemented by a pendant chandelier, are completely transformed. Such a functional room as a bathroom immediately begins to give the impression of a cozy and regal corner.

Many different types of lamps are used for bathrooms, and the choice of one or another option completely depends only on the interior designer.
Which is better?
Depending on whether you are looking for an option for a small bathroom or for a large one, different design ideas will do.
For a small room, it is best to opt for a built-in lighting. You should not pick up overhead models, or even more suspended ones, they will only litter an already small room. Please note that with the help of built-in lamps, you can visually balance the proportions of the room, make it larger.

When choosing in favor of built-in backlighting, you should pay particular attention to the manufacturer of the luminaire. For the bathroom, you need to buy models of proven brands that have proven themselves in the market and provide a long warranty for their fixtures.
Renowned companies have specialized lines for bathroom lighting, and it is advisable to select just such special samples.
You should not choose models without moisture protection. In whatever dry corner you think you place the lamp, there is still a great risk that water will get on it. In the best case, the luminaire can simply fail, and in the worst case, it can short-circuit the entire network. It is best to select models with one-piece shades made of waterproof materials that do not allow moisture to pass through.

If you are choosing lighting for a mirror, you need to build on the safety of the structure again. In this case, in addition to tightness, the luminaires should not produce too bright light that hits the eyes. Usually, tiled floors are made in bathrooms, on which it is easy to slip with the wrong lighting of the whole room.

Hanging chandeliers only work harmoniously in large bathrooms. When choosing a suitable model, pay attention to whether it is sufficiently resistant to hot water vapor.

Even those models that are not installed directly above the bathtub or shower stall are exposed to high humidity, and it is important that the chandelier does not sparkle at the most inopportune moment.
Manufacturers overview
Many countries produce decent bathroom models. Among them, European manufacturers are well-deserved. Italy, Spain, Belgium, Germany, Czech Republic care about their reputation, producing only high quality samples.

It is worth noting especially the Italian chandeliers, which differ from all the others in a huge selection of design solutions. You can even say that Italy is a trendsetter in the lighting market.
Options are in great demand from Turkey. Turkish lamps are of high quality, modern and are an order of magnitude lower than European ones. Turkey is among the leaders in the lighting market, as the quality of Turkish models is on a par with models from Europe, but the choice of a variety of fashionable options is less. In addition, most European manufacturers offer luxury models, while Turkey offers mid-range models.

Russia produces much lower quality models than Europe or Turkey, but prices are stable at the European level. In Russia, there are not many really worthy manufacturers that provide tolerable options that have passed mandatory certification. A small assortment also does not add popularity to Russian lamps.

The stereotype that China produces low-quality products, alas, not always turns out to be just a stereotype. Cheap models are not of good quality, but they are available in a wide range. A large selection is the only plus of models from China. Don't fall for the low price, remember that the miser pays twice.

How to choose the right one?
First of all, you need to think about the safety of the bathroom space. It is necessary to buy quality fixtures from trusted manufacturers, this is the only way you can avoid many problems. For example, it is not always possible to immediately replace a burned-out lamp that has been in use for only a couple of weeks: the repair budget is simply not designed for this. In order not to pay twice, buy a good quality model right away.

When purchasing, check if the luminaire is compatible with your ceiling type. For example, not all bulbs are suitable for mounting on stretch canvases, since they get so hot during operation that they simply melt the ceiling surface. A deformed ceiling in spots is not needed by anyone.
Check the IP index. Select the value that is optimal for the area where the luminaire is located. This issue was discussed in more detail in the "Features" section.
When choosing a light bulb, it is best to give preference to LED options. Such models are distinguished by the longest service life, which can be up to 50 hours. They do not heat up during operation, in addition, there are various variations in light temperatures: from mild yellowish to cool white.

Feel free to combine different types of lighting. Ideally, you should try to highlight all three zones: top, middle and bottom. When choosing one or another lamp, pay attention to how it is combined with other lighting fixtures and with the entire room as a whole.

Some aspects of the choice need to be considered in more detail, since they are often the most difficult.
How much should it be?
Bright light in the bathroom is not always appropriate. Sometimes it is necessary to create a relaxing atmosphere with subdued soft light. As a rule, this is exactly the effect that is achieved in SPA-salons, and it is quite possible to reproduce this at home. The main thing is to remember how many lamps should be in the room and how much light each of them should give.

There is a standard for the level of illumination for each room. The total number of lamps varies depending on the area of the premises, as well as on the required level of illumination. See the table for detailed wattage values.

It must be remembered that each of the lamps has its own level of light output, so it is important to focus on it when calculating the required number of lamps. You need to divide the total power from the table by the power of the selected lamp, and you will receive the number of required lamps.
Please be aware that these figures are approximate and will need to be adjusted as you go. In addition to the calculations performed, be guided by the intended purpose of the zone. Some of the spaces require more intense light than others, for example, the mirror area needs to be well lit, and corner spaces need not be supplemented with additional lamps.

Optimal size
The appropriate dimension of the luminaire is closely correlated with the shape and size of the bathroom itself. The height of the ceilings also matters, since the length of the luminaire directly depends on this.

For a little low premises, it is advisable to choose flat built-in models that fit tightly to the ceiling. These can be spotlights with a diameter of 60x60 mm or wide flat surface-mounted chandeliers of large diameter. For small rooms, spot lighting is mainly chosen, since it is enough for lighting and does not take up much space.

For small bathrooms with high ceilings you can use hanging models of a minimalistic design of medium size or small intricate structures. In both cases, the luminaire cannot provide enough light, so it is supplemented with small, high-brightness spot patterns.

For spacious rooms the choice of dimensions is quite large, but there is one limitation: the main luminaire should not be small. Small models in large rooms look ridiculous, even if it is a bathroom. You can choose a large diameter overhead chandelier or a suspended fantasy model. From small pendant lights, you can create a whole composition. It is desirable to additionally use small point built-in LEDs.

For mirror illumination usually do not use large lamps. Models are mounted along the perimeter of the mirror and do not exceed its dimensions. Often, a long lamp is smaller than the sides of the mirror, no matter where it is mounted: top, bottom or sides.

Forms
The traditional shape of ceiling lights is a circle. The round models are suitable for most interior styles, and also fit into all rooms, regardless of their size and proportions. Currently, absolutely all bathroom fixtures are made round: point, overhead, pendant.

Square options are more often used as wall lighting. They are used as lighting fixtures for mirrors, niches, interesting details. Since square lamps look unusual and modern, they are often used as independent decorative elements - an alternative to paintings. Square-shaped models can be made in various dimensions, however, point built-in square models cannot be found. This is due to the peculiarities and fragile structure of the ceiling.

Curly options are used in bold styles in large rooms. Lamps can be made in the form of crystals, balls. Popular spot options with adjustable narrow beam of light.

Tubes are used to illuminate mirrors or other interesting items in the bathroom. The cylindrical version can be fixed both horizontally and vertically. There are even interesting dual-lamp models available. The models are made in a waterproof version, so that they can be installed in an area of high humidity, for example, close to the bath itself.

The choice in favor of this or that configuration is limited only by the imagination of the owner of the bathroom. It is important to take into account the functionality and location of the luminaire in order to choose the most suitable form option.
Materials (edit)
There are materials that are absolutely not intended for installation in places of high humidity. These include wood, plaster, ceramics. Despite the fact that many are not at all averse to mounting a wooden lamp in the bathroom, this is strongly discouraged.
Wood is a very "capricious" material that quickly loses its appearance due to sudden temperature changes, and in a room with high humidity, wood can even rot.
Plastic, on the contrary, "takes root" well in bathrooms. Overhead structures made of plastic panels with LED filling have long become classics of the genre for decorating bathrooms.

Please note that only LED bulbs can be used with plastic shades, all other designs will cause the body to blacken and melt.
With models in a glass case, the situation is just the opposite. Glass tolerates temperature extremes and high humidity, and is by far the preferred option for bathrooms. Both matte and transparent variations cope equally well with their protective functions, the only difference is in the softness of the light: in the first case, the luminous flux is sharper, and in the second, it is diffused.

Often, plastic or glass samples have impregnations of metal, mainly aluminum. It does not corrode and weighs quite little, as a result of which it has received widespread acceptance. In the design of bathrooms, aluminum inserts of the color chrome, bronze, light silver are often used. The listed colors are the most versatile and are suitable for both classic and modern bathrooms.

Actual styles
Bathrooms are furnished in completely different styles, respectively, and different lighting devices are selected for them. Somewhere it is appropriate to use fanciful pendant lamps, somewhere - a modest spotlight.

For bathrooms and toilets in a retro style, it is common to use fanciful hanging structures.
Despite the fact that their light is sometimes not enough, the use of additional lighting is not encouraged. The most you can decide on is to attach a pair of classic design wall sconces in the mirror area or on the sides of the bath. The material for the chandelier is glass or crystal combined with a forged metal base.

Oddly enough, the hallmark of modern techno bathroom interiors is the lack of lighting. All kinds of small luminaire models are used here: spot, ceiling and wall spots. Most often, it is customary to install only one type of fixture, avoiding creating combinations.

A mandatory element is the presence of mirror illumination. It is advisable to choose a cold white light for decorating a bathroom, the temperature of which is kept at about 4000 Kelvin.
The popular loft trend opens up a wide scope for experimentation, as it approves of the use of almost all types of lamps, from classic chandeliers to ultra-modern long models. Any possible combination of them with each other for zoning a room is welcomed, for example, illumination of a sink and a bath with one type of lamps, a rug and a cabinet with towels - another, and the like.

How to arrange?
To make the lighting as comfortable and functional as possible, you should place the backlight at strategically important points in the room. The greatest difficulty is the location of the lamps near the mirror. In this case, it is important to place the backlight either around the entire perimeter or on the sides of the mirror, since if you place the lamps above and below, this will distort your reflection, making it difficult to correctly apply makeup or shave.

Don't forget to put an extra floor lamp next to the towel cabinet. This will make the bathroom more comfortable, at the same time making it easier to navigate when looking for the necessary item. If the cabinet is located in a so-called "damp" area, use several spotlights-spots or a suspended model of diffused light in a waterproof housing.
You can place the LED strip of regular light behind the sink by the faucet. This option will save you the need to turn on the overhead light if you just need to wash your hands. This will lead to big energy savings, freeing up the budget for more important purchases.

Create a highlight for niches or interesting details by positioning the light to focus on similar elements. This will make the overall interior more interesting and dynamic.

Stylish options in the interior
- Surface mounted spotlights are often used in small bathrooms with high ceilings. Burnt-out models are easy to replace with new ones. The height of the ceiling makes it possible not to strongly influence the steam on the ceiling covering itself, thereby practically not affecting the built-in wiring.
- It is worth paying attention here not so much to the ceiling lamps and the wall model as to the luminous sink. Such a solution is extremely unusual and will not fit into every interior, however, in this particular case, the luminous sink is the main accent of the entire room.
- A fully sealed circular pendant chandelier creates soft, diffused light. As a rule, one such lamp is enough to illuminate a small bathroom. Most likely, there is another lamp in a dry corner near the shelves, since the light from the chandelier is clearly not enough to illuminate the entire proposed area.
- Elite crystal models are usually not installed in bathrooms, but this example is special. Many unusual solutions were used here: a lambrequin on the window, a mirror ball on the edge of the jacuzzi, and so on. The lower area is illuminated with lamps built into the bathtub. This move made the area of the room visually larger.

- In this case, the light is used in a metered manner and serves to create a special atmosphere. The soft candlelight is in harmony with the illumination of the mirror area. Spot luminaires that create directional streams of light sufficiently illuminate the rest of the area. The use of built-in lighting directly in the bathtub makes the room interesting and modern.
- In low-rise bathrooms equipped with a stretch ceiling, it is best to use built-in spotlights. They will not take up much space, will not draw attention to themselves and will create a sufficient level of lighting in the room. It is advisable to equip the mirror with additional lamps that do not allow water to pass through.
- The original lighting structures look interesting and old-fashioned in a good way. The designer has chosen the perfect duo from a ceiling-mounted chandelier and ghostly sconces. You can see that there are two switches next to the sink: for the overhead light and for the sconce. It is better not to use switches in this place, if water gets on them, a short circuit may occur.

- Several overhead ceiling lamps are a great alternative to recessed lighting. They look extremely harmonious, since the size and shape are almost identical to the tiles, which are laid out on the walls and floors. Chandelier cover panels prevent direct water ingress on the light bulbs.
- Despite the retro touch, the bathroom still remains modern thanks to the competent selection of mirror lamps. Their minimalistic design and the use of luxury materials made them an important detail in this room. They are not protected from water, so the designers competently separated them from splashing with a glass partition.
- In a room with niches, a good solution would be to create their illumination. So the bathroom is completely transformed, the illusion of a large room appears, which continues beyond the niches. It is also necessary to focus attention on details, for example, on objects hidden in niches or mirrors.
