Any apartment welcomes guests and residents entering it with its own corridor. It is in this place that the first impression of your home is formed. And the household members, upon entering their apartment, have a pleasant feeling of a familiar home atmosphere. The corridor space is practically the internal "facade" of the whole house or apartment.
But oddly enough, for many, it’s the last thing to do before renovating and arranging the hallway. We carefully think over the design of the living room, bedroom and nursery furnishings. But we often pay very little attention to the hallway in our house.
The layout of many multi-room apartments includes a long and rather narrow corridor. This space, at first glance, is very difficult to use effectively and beautifully. The installation of furniture is either completely impossible due to too little free space, or the installed cabinet or cabinet completely obstructs the passage area, constraining the residents and interfering with normal movement between rooms. But a long corridor in an apartment is not at all a punishment and a lack of planning, as many might think. The space of a long hallway can be easily arranged, making it both comfortable and beautiful.
Thinking about projects for the improvement of the hallway, many come to a dead end. Often the first thing that comes to mind is redevelopment. This option can be considered, however, it is not always feasible, moreover, it is very costly. The duration of such repairs is delayed and involves a lot of noise and the formation of a large amount of debris in the process. It is much more economical, more convenient and faster to equip and decorate the space of a long corridor using cosmetic methods, with the help of a competent selection of colors, design and placement of suitable and practical pieces of furniture.
It is worth starting the transformation of your large hallway by defining functional areas in it. The corridor includes two zones: entrance and passage.
In the design, it is worth dividing these zones using various options for finishing and styling the decor:
The entrance area begins immediately after the door and can have a different area. This is the area in which guests and residents of the apartment take off and leave their outdoor shoes and outerwear. It usually contains cabinets and cabinets for shoes, a wardrobe, wall hangers for clothes. It is important to have a mirror in this area, because when leaving the apartment, each of us strives to look at ourselves, adjust the hat or pull up the wrapped edge of the coat
The mirror can hang on one of the free wall surfaces, or the wardrobe in the hallway can have a mirrored door. The area near the door can be laid out with floor tiles.
The walk-through area includes the rest of the corridor space, stretching along the rooms. In this area, you can lay a carpet or linoleum. Colors and ornaments are selected in accordance with the design of the walls and furniture. Light and soft colors visually create the impression of a wider corridor
Wall, floor and ceiling decoration
The entrance and passage areas should be decorated in different styles and colors in order to visually fix the zoning boundaries:
Hallway or entrance area it is better to arrange in darker colors. Lay an easy-to-clean surface on the floor (floor tiles, parquet, laminate). From furniture there are items necessary for storing clothes and shoes. At the very entrance it is good to have a small curbstone for storing bags and packages. For convenient storage of keys, you can attach a stylized key holder to the wall
Do not unnecessarily clutter up the hallway area with pieces of furniture, otherwise you and your guests will have nowhere to turn around at the entrance. Try to find the most practical and appropriate options.
Passage area of the corridor in a three-room apartment, it is usually narrow and visually, as it were, presses. To get rid of this unpleasant effect, it is better to use light colors of the warm spectrum in the design of walls and ceilings. It is not necessary to level the walls with drywall, this finishing option will steal the already necessary and precious centimeters of width. For the corridor, liquid and vinyl wallpaper, wallpaper with a textured pattern are suitable
Large abstract patterns "expand" the space between the walls well. Conversely, vertical or horizontal stripes on wallpaper reduce the visual perception of the size of your hallway.
Ceiling it is better to make it monochromatic, without a pattern. Well suited for the hallway stretch option. You should not opt for a multi-level ceiling design, it is suitable for large, spacious rooms
How to furnish?
Well-chosen furniture will help to equip the corridor in the most stylish and practical way. First of all, in a narrow and long hallway, you need to pick up compact pieces of furniture so as not to clutter up the already small free space.
Necessary pieces of furniture in the hallway and corridor:
- Cabinet or shelf for shoes.
- Chest of drawers.
- Wall or floor hanger.
- Ottoman or stool.
If space permits and there is a need, this list of furniture items can be expanded. For a wardrobe, it is better to choose the option with sliding doors. To save space, it is convenient to use folding or pull-out elements of small furniture (pull-out table, folding chair or stool).
It is better to place pieces of furniture along one of the walls, and leave the other free of furniture. Cross-placement does not look aesthetically pleasing in a narrow space, and it also interferes with the design of the walls. Built-in ceiling mezzanines are a good and convenient option for storing various things.
Playing with color a narrow corridor
All light and warm colors are well suited for decorating a narrow hallway space. The main goal in this option is to visually expand and increase the space, to reduce the feeling of "heaviness" from nearby walls and ceilings. You can also experiment with bright colors with warm light colors. It is highly desirable that the floor and ceiling differ from the walls by several tones. Usually the ceiling is made the lightest or whitest, and the walls are decorated in pastel colors.
However, the introduction of relatively bright elements is still desirable, otherwise there is a possibility that your hallway will look like a white hospital corridor. You can hang bright pictures on the walls, or pick up light-colored wallpapers with a large pattern. Dark colors should be avoided, especially on the ceiling. A dark pattern will strongly "crush", darken and visually reduce the space.
A correctly selected lighting option can be a good assistant in correcting layout flaws. In the case of a narrow hallway, only one light source should be avoided. For example, one chandelier in the entrance area will not be able to sufficiently illuminate the entire length of the corridor, and a chandelier suspended in the middle or at the end of the passage area will weakly give light into the hallway.
Spot lighting is ideal for a long, narrow corridor. Several LED lamps can be installed in the false ceiling along the entire length of the corridor. The corridor will be lit evenly and brightly enough.
A beautiful and stylish option that can be used to decorate and illuminate a long space involves placing multiple fixtures along one wall. If you choose such lamps or lamps in accordance with the general design style, they will also perform a decorative role.
Pictures or mirrors on the walls can be emphasized by illuminating them with a special LED strip. LED spotlights can be installed in furniture.
When choosing lighting, try not to leave dark corners and low-light areas. Mirror and glass surfaces, reflecting light falling from lighting fixtures, will visually expand the space.
How to decorate?
A small space of a narrow hallway should not be overloaded with decorative elements. You can decorate the walls with wallpaper with a large pattern. Decorative lights or lamps will also decorate your hallway. Small paintings can be placed on the walls to match the overall style of decoration.
More recently, backlit large-format pictures have become popular. The large aspect ratio and lighting design make such a picture a very good option for decorating a corridor.
It should be remembered that you should not choose such paintings for the hallway in gloomy and dark colors.
Embossed decorative plaster in combination with mosaics is often used to decorate walls. A particularly beautiful effect is provided by a combination with a mirror mosaic, accentuated by lighting. Mirrors can also be decorated with LED lighting.
Tricks to increase space
A few simple rules will help to visually enlarge and expand your corridor:
- The corridor must be sufficiently well and evenly lit. Dark areas drop out of the field of view and reduce the visible space.
- It is not necessary to install one lighting fixture only in one part of the corridor. It is preferable to perform spot lighting along the entire length of the hallway with several LED lamps or ceiling lights. You can place multiple stylized fixtures along a single wall.
- Do not place large or large chandeliers or lamps on the ceiling and walls of a narrow corridor. In a small room, they "steal" the visual space. Large chandeliers look good in spacious rooms.
- Do not put bulky furniture, try to save unoccupied free space of the walk-through area. You can use pull-out or folding furniture (table, stool, chair), which can be easily removed after use. It is better to give preference to wardrobes and dressers with a small, compact width, it is better to compensate for it with a greater height or length of furniture.
If the height of the ceiling allows, you can mount a mezzanine on one of the sections of the corridor. Usually mezzanines are installed at the end of the walk-through area, above the entrance to the room and decorated as a multi-level structure. This option is not suitable for apartments with low ceiling heights.
- In the design of the walls, ceiling and floor, you need to adhere to light, warm colors. It is better to leave the ceiling plain, without a pattern. Avoid wallpaper with vertical or horizontal stripes, which will narrow and stretch the space. An abstract large drawing is good for decorating a corridor. You can use paintable vinyl wallpaper and paint the walls in a solid light tone.
- To save free space, you should give preference to wardrobes with sliding doors. They do not swing open and do not interfere with the passage.
- Interior doors can be replaced with arches. This is a very stylish and beautiful solution. If this option is inappropriate, you can consider sliding door models.
Ideas and the best solutions in the interior
The design of a multi-room "stalinka" with a long corridor can beautifully complete the unusual and stylish interior details.
Self-leveling floor is an interesting, aesthetic decor option. At the moment, this type of flooring is gaining great popularity. Using decorative stone to decorate specific areas of the hallway will also give it a unique style.
Shelves and furniture with built-in spot lighting are very popular. The illuminated shelves can be used to place art and decorative items.
Decorating the walls and ceiling with large mirrors will create the feeling of a more square corridor. Mirrored surfaces should be well lit. By reflecting ambient light, they create the effect of a spacious room.
If the ceiling height is about 3 meters or more, ceiling lamps hanging from thin legs look beautiful and original.
