The massive development in the 60-80s of the last century left a legacy of many so-called "Khrushchevs", in which almost a quarter of the country lives and huddles. Your own apartment is, of course, good, but you want it to be “warm and cozy” right from the doorway. This is where many layout problems arise. Narrow, small hallways and corridors of an incomprehensible shape will make those who decide to renovate them puzzle.

Features of the corridors in typical "Khrushchevs"

The Soviet building left us several types (series) of "Khrushchev". As a rule, such apartments had a narrow and small corridor. The layout of the apartments is such that the hallway could be in the form of a small square or the letter "G". The main task of the corridor was the separation of adjacent rooms, other functionality was not provided.

Considering the fact that the apartments themselves are small, it was an unforgivable mistake to ignore a few square meters of the house, so the territory of the corridors was massively used at that time. As a result, it turned into a warehouse of things hanging on hangers or folded in the vestibule, let alone the mezzanine. They could contain an incredible amount of everything.

Another problem of the premises is the lack of additional light sources. The constant twilight does not add aesthetics to the apartment, and there is not enough comfort in such corridors.

Time passed, but the "Khrushchevs" remained. There are also problems that need to be solved with modern finishing facilities, functional furniture and competent placement of details and accents.

Corridor dimensions

The size of hallways and corridors in small apartments is their main "problem". Expand 3 sq. m is very problematic. The width of the room was conceived so that everything could be reached by hand, 0.85 cm - a little less than a meter by the standards of those times. The height of the ceilings, as a rule, is decent - 2.5 meters, but often it is "eaten up" by built-in upper cabinets or mezzanines.

The corridor is catastrophically small, so the decision to expand it at the expense of other rooms suggests itself. If a radical demolition of the walls is impossible, then various niches and storage rooms become the territory of the hallway. (fortunately, in the layouts of "Khrushchev" often such are provided).

Various styles in "Khrushchev"

The modern market of building and finishing materials presents the owners of "Khrushchev" houses with the opportunity to embody the most daring fantasies in terms of style. You can embody high-tech, classics, Provence, baroque, art-deco in "Khrushchev", if only there are funds. But the realities are such that most often minimalism is used in the interior of the Khrushchev corridors, and we can say maximum minimalism.

In the design of hallways, such style directions are often used, which involve the use of high-quality furniture without unnecessary frills (including a complete rejection of unnecessary interior items), prevailing light shades, natural materials.

The modern style of the corridors in the "Khrushchevs" is a kind of mix of minimalism with Provence, classics or any other style that organically fits into the concept of the entire interior of the apartment.

Decoration and design of small-sized corridors

The operating conditions of the hallways dictate a certain choice of materials that must meet several criteria:

  • The color should not be easily soiled, but at the same time light. It is the light gamut that is used most often, the prevailing dark colors in the interior of the corridor are extremely rare.
  • Resistant to water and cleaning agents. Dirt and slush are frequent "guests" of this room.
  • Wear resistance. The corridor is a walk-through room.
  • Aesthetics and economy.

The design of the corridor should be performed using a wide variety of decorating techniques aimed at expanding the space.

Colors

It doesn't matter what the corridor will be - painted with water-based paint, covered with vinyl wallpaper or finished with decorative stone. If the color combinations are chosen incorrectly, it will not be possible to save the interior. Accept the fact that the geometry will not change anyway, but you can and should work with visual perception.

It is well known that light colors create an effect of lightness and airiness, thereby pushing boundaries. It is quite impractical to use pure white color, unless only on the ceiling or as accents, but various light powdery shades, as well as pastels, beige, pink, gray, light green will be quite appropriate.

When choosing the color scheme of the hallway, you need to take into account the fact of low illumination of the room. Cool shades, such as blue, purple, violet, will further emphasize the lack of light.

Bright and vibrant colors can make good color spots that catch the eye, while dark colors are good in detail. They perfectly draw lines, create verticals and horizontals. As you know, vertical lines are able to "raise" the ceiling, and horizontal - to expand the room inward. The diagonal also has the ability to expand space. A cage or "ladder" will look advantageous, especially on the floor.

If your favorite color is not suitable for the design of the corridor, but you want to use it, you can use a fashionable design technique - to make a color stretch (ombre or gradient) with a predominance of light and warm shades. Smooth color transitions also push the walls and ceiling well.

Small room do not overload with a variety of colors … Better to limit yourself to one or three.

If you still want variety, then it is better to "play" with color shades. In this regard, a practical solution would be to choose a floor covering a couple of tones darker than the color of the walls.

Furniture in the hallway

It is very difficult to arrange a lot of furniture in a small apartment and especially in the hallway, but it is simply necessary to equip this corner, because this is where the house begins. Entering a room, a person must find a place where to hang or put outer clothing and shoes. Often, cabinets are allocated for these needs, but as a rule, there is no place for them in the "Khrushchevs". Therefore, an additional area of storage rooms or niches is used where furniture is built.

However, if there is no place for building the cabinet, then the free space of the corner is used, You can also place narrow furniture along the wall (pencil case, wardrobe; the depth of objects should not exceed 40 cm). In cases where the installation of even a narrow cabinet is not possible, an open hanger (a row of hooks on the wall) is used, complete with a shelf for hats and, possibly, a small shoe rack, which is additionally used as a place for sitting and changing shoes.

In the apartments "Khrushchev" you can also find mezzanines - small cabinets under the ceiling.

This arrangement of furniture allows you to save space and solve the problem of storing things, it does not clutter up the passage, however, it somewhat conceals the height of the ceiling.

Wall, floor and ceiling decoration

It is possible to make repairs in the corridor, which visually expand the space, thanks to the use of modern finishing facilities. Starting from the ceiling and ending with the floor, the entire decoration of the hallway should be consistent with the characteristics of the room.

The ceiling can be simply leveled, whitewashed or painted, but you can turn to specialists who will build a low plasterboard structure with built-in light around the entire perimeter, if the height allows. Also, craftsmen can stretch the ceiling, which, due to its surface and lamps, will visually enlarge the room.

This effect can be achieved with a glossy canvas.

Walls can be painted, plastered, wallpaper pasted, but you should not use panels, since you will need several "extra" centimeters of space to fix them. When choosing materials for wall decoration, you should take into account the nature of the use of the room. Materials must be wear and moisture resistant.

Not all paint or plaster can withstand frequent spring cleaning, but vinyl wallpaper does.

Hallway floors should be chosen for the same reasons as wall coverings. The most common flooring materials are as follows:

  • Tile. Perfectly withstands frequent washing, however, "cold". Under it, you can lay a warm floor, however, during the period of active operation, such a technique will become very energy-consuming.
  • Laminate. Most models do not contact well with water. Careful selection of moisture-resistant laminate is required.
  • Linoleum. Insulated material will be an excellent and economical solution for the hallway. Durable enough and not afraid of high humidity.

Room decor

The final touches in the design of the room can help level out the imperfections in the interior. Using well-thought-out lighting can create the very coziness that has been lacking. There should be a lot of lighting in the corridor. Possible placement options for lighting fixtures are given below:

  • Built-in lights around the perimeter of the ceiling or along the wall, staggered, wave, and so on;
  • Lighting of built-in furniture (both top and bottom);
  • Diffused light from wall lights.

The use of frescoes on the so-called accent wall can visually expand the space. The fresco can be replaced with a large original painting or photo wallpaper. In addition, you can lay out a decorative stone frame around the arch or partially along the wall. It imitates natural material well and can fit perfectly into the concept of a hallway.

An excellent decorating solution for a narrow corridor will be the placement of a small photo or art gallery. Small images will become the very accent that will play up the width of the narrow corridor.

The corridor is a through room, and the main piece of furniture that connects the hallway and the rooms is the doors and doorways. Beautiful doors can contribute to the interior of the room. Refined arches or strict doorways will become a logical continuation of the corridor and a "window" to another room.

It is difficult to imagine a practical hallway without a mirror, because you definitely need to look into it before leaving. It is imperative to use it, because it is known that the mirror perfectly expands the space.

Mirrors placed on the cabinet door or on the wall, together with lighting fixtures, can create the illusion of additional volume.

Interior options

Everyone can create a beautiful and practical corridor design. The main thing in this matter is to approach thoroughly the choice of materials and furniture, to decide how the lighting of this dark nook will be organized.

The use of various design and decoration techniques is encouraged, due to which the room will seem larger.
