Shabby-Chic means “shabby luxury”. This elegant style was created by housewife and antiques connoisseur Rachel Ashwell. The interior of the shabby-chic style is not simple, it balances between aristocracy, luxury and "dilapidated antiquity". Many people liked the shocking, but gentle and restrained direction in design in English.
Features of the
The interior features soft pastel shades, noble dilapidated walls, worn tiles, expensive parquet, and the presence of antiques. Shabby chic borrowed the best from Provence, Baroque, retro, combining romance, comfort, antiquity and luxury. It is confused with Provence due to a touch of dilapidation, but unlike the sweet rustic rudeness, it leans towards aesthetics.
Shabby chic is opposed to minimalism, which requires perfect renovation, new technology and lack of decor.
"Shabby luxury" is dissolved in a calm light range of colors, there are antiques here, a sense of antiquity combined with expensive materials. Delicate floral ornaments can be found everywhere: on furniture, curtains, textiles. Despite the preference for uniform tones of the cladding, it can be diluted with tiles with an unobtrusive pattern.
This is not to say that shabby chic belongs to inexpensive interiors, the presence of antiques and natural solid materials requires certain financial investments. And the abundance of light and space needs spacious rooms.
The room, decorated with shabby chic tiles, delights with an abundance of light and air. But the color scheme suggests the presence of color not in its pure form, but in a slightly faded interpretation with a touch of antiquity. For this, the tiles are specially aged. The design is characterized by delicate shades of blues, pinks, smoky white, lilac and cream tones.
It is a cocktail of shades, not a clear color, that characterizes this style.
The participation of several equally warm shades in the interior is permissible. Shabby chic does not like contrasts and bright combinations. Sometimes, in an abundance of pastel colors, tiles with sophisticated floral patterns or abstract patterns with blurred outlines are interspersed. The cladding does not allow dark tones, but their use is possible in decor, for example, in the design of forged handles for furniture, antique figurines or tableware.
On the walls, a milky-white cladding material without gloss is often used, which has a refined wear. The floor is covered with pastel-colored ceramics or wood-like tiles in light bleached shades with artificial cracks.
The texture of ceramic tiles
The designers have developed a tile that imitates the old material with defects. Tiling the floor with similar ceramics of different sizes and spreading them unevenly can give the impression of an old coating.
Wide seams of unequal dimensions are used in the cladding, distributed over the surface. In this case, the effect of the old tile is achieved by imitating its "spreading" from time to time.
In the shabby chic collection there is a tile made under a light aged brick, which is especially popular, judging by the reviews. It is used in living rooms to decorate a fireplace, in bathrooms and as an apron in the kitchen.
When creating a “shabby luxury” style, attention should be paid to the entire interior. Correctly selected furniture should be combined with aged tiles, otherwise the cladding will look unkempt.
Application in the interior
The tiles are made with the participation of clay, sand and other natural materials, pressed and fired at a high temperature. As a result, a durable moisture-resistant material is obtained, which is used in rooms with high humidity: bathroom, kitchen, bathroom, hallway.
For the bathroom, tiles are a familiar material. Impregnated with an antibacterial coating, it does not hold back mold and mildew and is easy to maintain. A shabby chic bathroom is not created for lovers of ultra-fashionable trends, it is permeated with warm shades, disposes to comfort and romance.
In the kitchen, tiles with a faded pattern are used, light colors visually make the space wider. Most often it is used to create an apron and flooring, but sometimes walls are lined with it.
Shabby chic tiles are suitable for creating stylish terraces and verandas.
Consider a few examples of the use of tiles in the interior:
In the bathroom, the wall tiles imitate white brick with clearly defined seams. The bright room is full of antiques
The bathroom, tiled with milky ceramics, looks light and comfortable. An interior with high walls could have melted into a monotonous white shade, if not for the insertion of delicate floral decor.
You can very clearly show the shabby chic style. Floor coverings, pieces of furniture and paintings - all have an accentuated touch of antiquity. White brick tiles conceal rather than emphasize the "antiquity" of the furnishings
Two types of ceramics are involved in the facing of the room, which harmonize beautifully with each other. Airy light brickwork frames the walls and arched vault. On the large tiles laid out around the window, the imitation of cracks, characteristic of "shabby chic", is visible
Aged stone-look tiles in the bathroom. The interior is diluted with white textiles and decorated with fresh flowers
In the floor covering, the technique of "sloppy" laid out tiles was applied, it looks quite vintage
The bathroom walls are lined with tiles with a blurry pattern. Instances of plot ceramics are randomly inserted. Plain pavement patches match the floor color. It gives the impression of a very old interior. It seems that it was necessary to redo the fragments of the walls with the lost copies
The kitchen-living room in the shabby chic style is represented by light beige floor tiles. The ceramic of the apron is several tones higher than the shade of the floor. The room is bright, spacious, with well thought out decor
Living room decorated with wrought iron elements. The floor is paved with aged cladding in various sizes to create an antique look.
In the room, ceramics are present on the floor and on the wall with washbasins. Tiles of different textures and patterns are combined with furniture and textile decor. The presence of antiques is indicated in the mirrors
