With the help of textured paint, your room will sparkle with new colors. This article will show you how to do the staining process with this substance yourself. This instruction is suitable even for novice craftsmen.
Features of the
Today, when decorating walls, any idea can be displayed on their surface. In addition to the usual putty, at this stage of the repair, the master is provided with a wide selection of textured paints - a special material intended for painting. It includes a structural component.
Textured paint is used for external and internal work. It can be used on a wide variety of surfaces - wood, glass, metal and brick materials. It is suitable for surfaces containing a layer of finishing filler. The paint can mask the presence of small cracks on the surface, giving it uniformity and smoothness. The silk paint finish is especially suitable for wood.
Advantages and disadvantages
Textured paint, like any other type of finish, has its own advantages and disadvantages. One of the qualities for which the material is so highly valued by the masters is its decorative effect. A variety of colors and textures allows you to implement the most sophisticated design solutions in your work. The second advantage is the long service life of the coating. Wallpaper is an alternative option for decorating walls, on average, it can last about 5 years, and textured paint has a 10-year lifespan. The material is applied relatively quickly, while saving the time of the master.
You can refresh the color of the walls by applying a new layer of paint, while the wallpaper that has lost its brightness will have to be re-glued, which will take longer than repainting.
It is worth noting that the harmful effects of sunlight on textured paints do not apply., as a result of which the material does not fade. This type of coating has ductility and, with natural shrinkage of buildings, will not be covered with small cracks. This finishing option is solid, which means a continuous continuous coating without any adhesions and overlaps, which cannot be avoided as a result of the use of other materials. Their presence is subconsciously perceived as a defect that visually violates the integrity of the wall. The textured coating is unpretentious; you can easily remove dirt from its surface with a foam sponge. The material has an antistatic property, due to which dust settling on it is excluded.
The use of this material is also permissible when arranging the interior of a nursery. For decorating a child's room, the choice falls on water-based paints, which do not contain irritating components in the composition and do not cause allergies. Textured paints are suitable for covering a room for any purpose, including a bathroom, since they are highly moisture resistant and do not deteriorate from exposure to water vapor. Lack of susceptibility to dampness plus everything prevents the formation of mold. The textured coating is used when decorating kitchen premises, because it practically does not absorb odors.
The material has frost resistance and resistance to high temperatures, which greatly expands the possibilities of its application.
The disadvantage of using textured paint is the mandatory preliminary preparation of the walls. The surface should be as smooth as possible, but the presence of small irregularities is not critical, the paint is able to cover them. The inconvenience of textured paint is high consumption. A large amount of material can be consumed per unit area, which indicates the high cost of this finishing method.
Paints for textured finishing are different in their composition:
- Mineral is produced in the form of a dry powder based on lime and cement. Used for exterior wall decoration.
- Silicone based paint will serve as a durable coating both outside and inside the room. At the end of the work, the finished coating is resistant to temperature extremes and moisture.
- Silicate textured paint - this is the most expensive type of material, but compared to the previous one, it has more positive qualities. It has an antistatic property that prevents dust from settling on the surface and is easy to clean and can be wet processed. Used in conjunction with a silicate-based primer.
- Acrylic textured paint is the most plastic type of material, allows for a variety of tinting and the use of suitable fillers.
Textured paint often includes additional components that give the surface the desired design. Sawdust and quartz chips are added to the paint in order to create the relief of the walls.
To form a textured velvety surface a mixture of the base material with quartz sand or tiny particles of metals is used, which is then specially colored unevenly. Such a textured material is called atacama, it is able to reflect light due to those small particles in the composition. Misuri is a type of coating made with acrylic paint with the addition of artificial starch.
Preparing the walls
First of all, it is necessary to close the ceiling and floor from unwanted pollution; for this, a special film is used, which is fixed with masking tape.
The walls must be prepared before applying textured paint. Old coatings, rust, grease stains and mold formation are removed from them. Then the walls must be given smoothness by plastering them and puttingty the surface. After the putty layer has dried, the walls are treated with a deep penetrating acrylic primer. It provides a tight interaction between the surface and the textured paint, eliminating the possibility of unnecessary consumption. The color of the primer must match or be close in tone to the textured paint itself. After priming, you need to wait 5 hours until it dries completely, then you can start painting itself.
When carrying out external finishing work with textured paint, attention should be paid to the weather. In no case should it be rainy or very hot. You should also avoid direct sunlight on a damp paint surface. Avoid the formation of condensation on the work surface. The optimum ambient temperature will be in the range from +5 to +30 C.
If the coloring of textured materials occurs indoors, it must be carefully ventilated.
One of the important factors that ensure the successful completion of wall decoration with textured paint is the right lighting. Experienced craftsmen advise when working to use the type of lighting that is planned to be installed in the room after the completion of the repair. The perception of chiaroscuro of the future relief, which forms visual perception, depends on the direction of the incident light. Before starting work, the paint must be warmed up to room temperature. Before applying, it must be thoroughly mixed and, if necessary, add color to it to create a certain color. After adding it, mixing is repeated.A drill with a special mixer attachment will help to get the most uniform mixture. It is permissible to add a small amount of water to the mixture to change the consistency, but its amount should not exceed 1%.
The options for applying a textured coating vary depending on what result is planned to be obtained. Basically, an extensive spatula is used to apply paint; the surface is worked out in the corners, on the contrary, with a narrow one. It is recommended to apply a thick layer of paint on which the relief designs can be easily applied.
The minimum thickness of the textured paint layer should not be less than 3 mm. The movement on the working surface should pass from the angle of the plane to the opposite. When covering the wall with textured paint, it is necessary to work quickly and without long breaks, since pauses can lead to uneven drying of various fragments. It is impossible to create an even layer at the moment when it has already begun to dry out on a separate part of the surface. There is a high probability of the appearance of irregularities that will nullify all the work.
The creation of patterns requires the plasticity of the still raw paint, which it retains for an hour and a half after application.
At the end of the application, the containers with textured paint should be tightly closed. Air ingress will dry out and deteriorate the material. Textured paint can be used with a roller. Its pile can be either smooth or hard, up to 1 cm long. The roller direction should be the same throughout the entire painting period, this will make the surface uniform.
There is a third method of applying textured paint, which requires a pneumatic spray gun. Its essence lies in the fact that the paint is sprayed over the entire surface. Applying paint with a spray gun will give a high-quality result if its nozzle is at least 3 mm in diameter, and the pressure is 5 atm. If necessary, painting takes place in two layers, and the drying time of the first layer takes from 3 to 10 hours. Complete drying of several layers of paint takes one day in duration. After finishing work, the tools must be thoroughly rinsed. The final polymerization is completed after 2 weeks.
Drawing a pattern is difficult for beginners, therefore, an inexperienced person in this matter needs patience. You can test your strength on a small fragment of the surface, which in the future will not be very conspicuous or will be obstructed by furniture after the repair is completed. You can give an unusual texture by step by step following a certain work algorithm. With a paint roller, you need to roll the leveled surface. Then another paint is applied to the resulting dried texture, its remnants are removed with a sponge, and in the recesses of the relief it remains saturated. As a finishing touch, the enamel is applied using a soft-bristled roller. Additional texture can be created by wrapping the roller with a thick rope or leaving marks on the paint from impacts with a damp cloth.
To obtain the original texture, a trowel is used, which serves to apply a second layer of paint to the wall surface.
Marseille wax provides many decor options. This plastic material is applied over the paint, it can be given any relief.
If you scratch the patterns shallowly with a sharp object in the not yet solidified layer of the dye, you can circle a stencil on this inhomogeneous surface. The use of a rubber roller can set the rhythm of the embossed pattern, the surface of the instrument will contain bulges and valleys in a repeating order. Its print will be placed over the entire surface of the walls after they have been rolled with a roller. A notched trowel can be used to apply the pattern, then the surface will be decorated with figures from lines.
The resulting pattern depends on the angle at which the spatula was moved; it can be made in the form of semicircles or waves. A newspaper wrapped in polyethylene will allow you to create irregularities on the wall of an apartment with your own hands, resembling flower buds in shape, each of which will have its own unique pattern. They can be given any color - red, pink, burgundy.
