In carrying out the final finishing work, we strive to take into account every little thing - one wrong stroke can ruin the entire final result. When it comes to working with building tiles, special attention should be paid to the design of the seams. The adhesive solution can see through between the elements of the masonry, which spoils the impression of the finish. This is especially important when it comes to cladding external walls, because they are in plain sight. Consider the features of grouts for clinker tiles, which are traditionally used in the exterior of houses, terraces, steps and paths.

Clinker tiles have a ceramic base and are produced by the single firing method. For production, shale clays, fluxes and coloring oxides are used. Holland is considered the homeland of this finishing material, from there it spread throughout Europe, and came to Russia from Germany. This material is no less durable and practical than stone, and even surpasses it in some characteristics. Such tiles easily tolerate temperature fluctuations and exposure to moisture, therefore it is widely used for outdoor masonry.

What is grout for?

The use of grout allows you to solve and prevent a lot of problems. The advantages of using it are obvious:

  • Aesthetics… If you choose a grout to match the tile, then the general appearance of the masonry will immediately change - it will look perfect. The option with contrasting grout can also look very good due to the originality of the color scheme.
  • Correction. In the hands of a professional, this material can work wonders. Even chips on individual tiles will be invisible thanks to the competent use of grout. Irregularities in lines with defects in masonry will also be easily hidden, the main thing is to entrust this work to the master.
  • Strengthening… Thanks to grouting, the strength of the masonry increases - it becomes more resistant to mechanical damage.
  • Protection. Moisture-resistant composition avoids premature deterioration of the exterior finish.

Of the manufacturers of clinker grouts, as a rule, German companies are heard, for example, "Quick Mix". The most popular are brick, red and brown grout, but if you wish, it will not be difficult to acquire this material of a different shade.

Next, you need to decide on the composition of the mixture. They are divided into three main types.

Dry powder… They are made on the basis of Portland cement and contain plasticizers. The packaging indicates in what proportions they need to be diluted by adding water or liquid latex. They are distinguished by convenient application, even when processing narrow seams, plasticity and low price

Cement. The preparation of this grout is inconvenient. During kneading, dust scatters around the room, which means it is better to do this with a respirator, gloves and glasses

Epoxy… These mixtures contain epoxy resin and hardener. They are particularly robust and retain their hydrophobic properties, even in harsh climatic conditions. Their disadvantage lies in a viscous consistency, so using this material is not as easy as others

Whichever type of grout you prefer, it is better to entrust the work with it to an experienced master. If you still intend to process the seams yourself, check out the different ways of working.

Semi-dry application technique

This method is used when working with Portland cement, which only needs to be slightly diluted with water and mixed thoroughly. To work, you need to purchase a bricklayer's jointing that matches the width of the seam on your masonry. In this case, the minimum seam depth should be 5 mm. Here's what the progress of work looks like with this method of applying grout:

  • adding a little water to the mixture, make a composition that resembles wet sand in consistency;
  • put the right amount of mortar on plywood or other material;
  • move it to the tile under the joint to be treated, and put a little of the mixture into it with jointing.

The texture of the joints filled in this way will have a rough surface, but in the case of clinker tiles it will look good, and in some cases it will even give the building an interesting "aging" effect.

The unusual texture of the seams processed in this way is a definite plus of this method. As for the disadvantages of using semi-dry technology, they are the complexity of the implementation and the very modest color range of the grout used.

Pistol technology

This is the simplest and most popular way to grout clinker tiles, which can be mastered not only by a professional, but also by an amateur:

  • prepare a pasty solution from the grout;
  • fill it with a regular construction gun and squeeze the composition out of the tool into the cavity of the seams without touching the tile itself, and if the mixture nevertheless gets on the masonry elements, immediately wipe it off;
  • after the initial setting, remove the excess with a knife;
  • now place the material more carefully into the seams with your finger or a spatula, avoiding strong pushing into the depth, otherwise water may accumulate in these places.

Where vertical and horizontal seams meet, it is best to make T-strips first, as these are the most difficult areas. Then you can walk through the rest of the intervals. Then the general appearance of the surface will be more accurate.

The biggest plus of gun trowels is ease of use, and the minus is their high cost. Also, plasticizers in their composition can lead to displacement of the tile if it did not have time to set.

Surface grout

This method is also not particularly difficult. It consists of several stages:

  • prepare the solution and let it stand for up to 15 minutes;
  • stir it again with a construction mixer - it should become like sour cream;
  • coat the wall with the mixture, and then remove the excess with a rubber float, leaving the seams at the level of the tiles;
  • Finally, go over the tiles with a foam sponge.

Excess composition must be removed as early as possible, before they have dried, otherwise you will have to use construction chemicals.

Any grout for clinker tiles gives the building a more well-groomed and expensive look. Be sure to use this trim, and do not forget that it is better to trust such works to an experienced craftsman.
