House renovation is not complete without the use of paints and varnishes. At this moment, the question is brewing: which paints are better? Among the wide range of paints and varnishes, alkyd paint occupies a special place. What it is and what its composition is, we will find out below.

When choosing finishing materials at the final stage of renovation work, you want everything to be beautiful, of high quality and as natural as possible. If we talk about paints, then you should pay attention to coatings that contain organic solvents.

What it is?

Alkyd paint is a versatile organic solvent based paint. As a rule, refined kerosene acts in its role. The composition of such paints includes alkyd varnish (glyphtal or pentaphthalic - it is used more often), many fillers (oils, sand, marble, granite chips of the finest fraction), solvents (white spirit or turpentine) and coloring pigments, hence the wide range of colors.

The composition of the paint depends on which coatings it is intended for. If these are wooden coatings, then antiseptics are present in the composition, if metal surfaces, then the presence of anti-corrosion components is mandatory.

Features of the

Alkyd paint is a special type of finishing material, it has a lot of features and a number of advantages. The name of the material speaks of its main components, which are the binder in the paint.

The advantages of this type of paints and varnishes include:

  • increased durability;
  • elasticity and durability;
  • no shrinkage, and therefore minimizing the appearance of cracks on the painted surface;
  • the possibility of using both indoors and outdoors;
  • high resistance to changes in temperature conditions (withstand from low minus temperatures -50 to incredibly high temperatures +50);
  • protective functions that paint gives to painted surfaces;

If we talk about the shortcomings, then based on the history of the use of paint, they are as follows:

  • increased toxicity, a pungent smell of varnish, which means that alkyd paint can be harmful;
  • low vapor permeability;
  • fire hazard (solvents in the composition are highly flammable);
  • low resistance to alkalis.

Alkyd paints and varnishes, depending on the basis on which they are made, for painting which surfaces they are intended for, and what type of their application, are divided into many types.

The entire range of alkyd paints and varnishes is divided into two main groups:

  • oil;
  • enamel.

Oil coatings are based on drying oil. If we talk about the density of colors, then they can be divided into categories:

  • liquid;
  • pasty.

If we take into account the degree of gloss, then alkyd oil paints and varnishes can be:

  • matte;
  • glossy;
  • semi-matte.

Matte finishes perfectly mask minor surface imperfections… In apartments, during finishing work, matt paints are used when painting corridors and as decorating elements in rooms.

Semi-matt paints have increased water resistance… They are perfect for painting surfaces in rooms with high humidity or those coatings that have to be washed frequently.

Glossy paints are used when decorating rooms.… They can easily highlight interior details or divide a room into zones.

Oil paints are divided into groups based on the type of drying oil that is part of them:

  • MA-021, which contains a film-forming component in the form of natural drying oil;
  • MA-025 with the addition of a film former in the form of a combination of several varieties of drying oil;
  • GF-023 based on glyphthalic drying oil;
  • PF-024, where the base is pentaphthalic drying oil.

The cost of oil paints is much lower than the cost of enamel coatings.

This type of paint and varnish material, along with the advantages, also has disadvantages:

  • high toxicity;
  • fire hazard;
  • tendency to yellowness and color fading;
  • the ability to be exposed to alkaline components.

Enamel coatings are made on the basis of varnish. They are considered universal and can be used for painting any surfaces.

Taking into account what kind of varnish is the basis of the paint, there is a division into two types:

Glyphthalic… The peculiarity of such a paint and varnish material is fast hardening, but a low degree of abrasion resistance, therefore, most often such paints are used indoors. They are also easily exposed to mechanical stress. A wide range of colors of glyphtal paints allows their use in all design directions

The most popular paint of this type is GF-230. It is suitable only for interior work, it can be painted on ceilings and walls.

Pentaphthalic… The most common type of alkyd enamel paint. They are water resistant and have a high degree of protection against rapid abrasion, burnout and damage. The popular pentaphthalic enamels are considered to be PF-115, PF-133, PF-223 and PF-253. PF-115 is intended for outdoor painting, it has a beautiful shimmer. PF-133 is not very resistant, does not cover the surface well, therefore it is better to apply it to previously primed surfaces, it dries within a few hours. Drying time is 10 to 24 hours

PF-223 is suitable for painting metal and wood surfaces. Perfectly adheres to the coating without making gaps, and has a wide range of colors.

PF-253 is intended for priming wood surfaces. It is quick-drying, forming an even and glossy color. It is applied, as a rule, in several layers.

Enamel paints can also have a glossy or matte finish. They have high resistance, excellent strength and durability. Surfaces painted with alkyd enamels are not afraid of any temperature extremes, be it severe frost or heat.

However, the greatest advantage of alkyd enamels is its high degree of water resistance, which allows it to withstand high levels of humidity. Accordingly, if a thin colored layer can withstand any moisture, then there will be no formation of fungus. Such enamel is not afraid of mechanical and alkaline influences.

Due to its elasticity, all alkyd paints and varnishes do not spread over the surface, are easy to apply and do not fade after a long time.

In addition to the main classifications of alkyd paints and varnishes, there are a number of surface painting products that you should pay attention to. For instance, aerosol alkyd enamel in cans… Designed for painting primed metal and wood surfaces. Often used when painting car parts.

Has a list of properties:

  • high gloss;
  • air drying;
  • has resistance to abrasion and mechanical damage;
  • increased adhesion;
  • excellent covering ability;
  • resistant to changes in air temperature;
  • has the ability to use indoors and outdoors.

To change the physical properties of paints and varnishes, additional components are added to them.

Taking into account the presence or absence of certain auxiliary components, alkyd paints can be divided into several more types:

  • alkyd-urethane;
  • styrene.

These types have the longest service life - from five to six years. Compared to standard alkyd coatings, they last about three years. They withstand critical temperature conditions from -60 to +60 degrees, very resistant, they are not afraid of mechanical and chemical damage, but they are long-lasting.

The classification of alkyd coloring agents is based on a certain digital code, by which it is easy to determine the specifics of the material:

  • 0 - this is a primer, which in some cases is applied before painting surfaces;
  • 1 - This is a material for outdoor use;
  • 2 - paint for interior work;
  • 3 - a material designed for a short service life is most often used for marking;
  • 4 - moisture resistant paints;
  • 5 - coloring material used in rooms with rodents, as it has protection against insects and rodents;
  • 6 - material resistant to components such as gasoline and oils;
  • 7 - paint resistant to chemical attack;
  • 8 - material with increased heat resistance;
  • 9 - paint for electrical insulating manipulations.

It is also worth knowing what the letter abbreviations on the packaging mean:

  • GF - glyphthalic paint material;
  • PF - pentaphthalic paint material;
  • NTs - fast-drying nitrocellulose enamel coatings with a glossy sheen;
  • KO - heat-resistant and weather-resistant paints with the addition of silicon organic polymers;
  • XC - anti-corrosion coatings for the metal base;
  • F - moisture-resistant paints that perform protective functions on an oil-phenol basis. Ideal for painting metal surfaces.

Color solutions

The color palette of alkyd paints and varnishes is not very wide, but it can be expanded with the help of tinting. Additionally, the desired dye is purchased and mixed with the main color, as a result, the desired shade is obtained. To obtain unusual tones, you can mix several dyes with paint at once.

Each type of alkyd paint taken separately has its own color range. For example, PF-223 has 17 tones, the GF-230 paint has many shades, ranging from a milky tone to all shades of brown. Spray paint in cans is distinguished by a variety of colors.

The most popular are black, brown and white paints.

Which is better?

To understand which type of paint is best to use during repair work, you just need to compare the technical characteristics of paints and varnishes. Most often, buyers choose between alkyd and acrylic paints and varnishes.

So, alkyd paints dry quickly, two days are enough for complete hardening and drying, which can not be said about acrylic materials, which may take 10-30 days to completely dry. It all depends on where the acrylic coating is used and what bases are painted with it.

The service life of surfaces painted with alkyd material is 3 years, and surfaces painted with acrylic paints will last much longer (5-8 years), and on metal bases and plasters, the service life is 15-20 years.

The price segment is also an important decisive factor, since the cost of alkyd materials is much lower than the price of acrylic coatings.

The compositions of the two types of paints are completely opposite.In one of them, acrylic and water are the basis, and in the other, varnish and white spirit are the basis, therefore, when choosing a specific type of coloring material, all factors and properties should be taken into account.

Tips & Tricks

In order to get the most out of the finishing material, you need to clearly understand its purpose and use it where it should be.

Alkyd paint is applied by brush, roller or sprayed on the surface. Before painting, the base must be prepared in advance, cleaned of dust, dirt, roughness and previous finishing or facing materials removed. On average, for painting 1 m², from 30 to 150 grams of material is consumed.

Before use, the paint must be thoroughly mixed to a homogeneous consistency. The usual shaking of the jar is not enough, stirring when opening the container with the material is better with an ordinary wooden stick.

Brushes for alkyd materials must be purchased from natural fibers, synthetic ones will not work, as they will retain paint, reducing the degree of gloss.

For painting surfaces made of wood, for example, a floor, it is better to use a material with an increased degree of abrasion resistance PF-253. Almost all grades of alkyd paints are suitable for painting metal products, but the environment of use should be taken into account… For example, for coloring heating radiators, it would be right to opt for PF -223. It is suitable for indoor use only and is resistant to high temperatures. Before using it, it must be diluted with gasoline.

Non-standard room decoration is not complete without the use of spray enamel. It is easy for her to paint small details and paint over hard-to-reach areas. It is odorless and dries very quickly.

For painting doors, furniture, it is better to use thixotropic alkyd paints… They are easy to apply with a brush and have an attractive semi-matte finish, but roller is best to avoid smudges. Such a coating is not afraid of frequent washing and the use of detergents.

Regular alkyd enamel is suitable for painting almost all substrates, this is a universal coating… It is used both indoors and outdoors. It is moisture resistant, durable and not afraid of temperature extremes. Most often it is used for painting facades.
