Painting various surfaces is not only able to give them an updated look, but also often helps to protect the product from rust or even minor mechanical damage. The use of paint for home repairs is inevitable, but certain obstacles to the acquisition of the desired composition are possible: the consumer may be scared off by the high price of the product, or it will not be available at all in the provincial wilderness.

In such situations, a possible solution to the problem would be to make the dye yourself.

Features of the

Regardless of the type, paint is perceived by most people as a purchased product, however, it is not so difficult to prepare it with your own hands at home. Typically, such a mixture contains only 2-3 main ingredients that must be included, which can be purchased on the market without any problems.

At the same time, expensive paints and varnishes of the best brands can show much higher qualities due to the inclusion of various additives, but home paint will also work for unpretentious use.

Making paints with your own hands allows you to significantly save on the purchase of expensive paint and make a product of exactly the type and color that you need.

It is quite possible that such material will be somewhat inferior to expensive industrial counterparts, say, in terms of durability or ability to withstand negative external influences, however, for a conditional small repair in a garage, this option is ideal.

Manufacturing methods

There are many recipes for making paint with your own hands at home - it all depends on the type of paint and varnish material that you plan to prepare. It should be noted that too complex varieties of paint (like facade or heat-saving paint) are better to buy after allbecause they contain a huge amount of additives. Everything else you can and should try to do yourself.

Slate

Blackboard paint paints any surface in such a way that an imitation of a chalk board is obtained. There can be quite a lot of ways of practical use of such a finishing material, but first of all, the eyes should light up in children - it is very convenient to write on a painted surface with chalk!

The composition is absolutely non-toxic even in the factory version, therefore its use in a nursery is quite appropriate. The home version differs from the one sold only in that the surface is scratched faster.

The easiest way involves the banal addition of two tablespoons of cement to a glass of any acrylic paint.

There is also a more complex recipe: add one part of matte varnish based on the same acrylic, cement (or putty, or grout) and water to three parts of acrylic paint. In both cases, the mixture is thoroughly mixed. The creator chooses the tinting at his own discretion.

For turning a wall or furniture into a full-fledged slate board you can also mix a small amount of magnetic chips with the cement - then the resulting substance will be able to attract metal objects to itself… It is not difficult to calculate the amount of such a crumb: the more there is, the higher the magnetic properties of the dye.

Oil

The paints used by artists for oil painting are very similar in their recipe to their construction counterparts, and people of art traditionally prepared materials for creativity on their own.

The most difficult to get hold of are pigments, that is, dyes. You will not be able to cook them yourself, so you just have to buy in a store or order on the Internet. The manufacturing process can be toxic, so you should take care of personal protective equipment in advance.: respirator and gloves.

The procedure should be carried out only in a well-ventilated area.

Separately, it should be said that the finished composition can react with metal, therefore metal dishes are not suitable for such operations.

Then everything is simple: the pigments are thoroughly mixed with linseed, nut, poppy or hemp oil. The exact proportion does not exist, however, the manufacturer's task is to completely moisten the pigments and bring them to a state of homogeneous slurry with a minimum of oil used, otherwise the paint will quickly turn yellow when dried. For kneading, use a glass stick or a special artistic tool - a palette knife.

You can also add a little wax (provides dullness), resin (gives shine) or turpentine (helps thinning the mixture) to the composition.

Acrylic

It is not difficult to make acrylic paint in words, but its composition includes many ingredients that are unlikely to be found in the house of an ordinary person. As in the case of oil paint, you will have to independently find and select ready-made pigments that are mixed with water to obtain a colored paste. After that, the resulting liquid dye is combined with an acrylic dispersion, which will also have to be specially purchased. The density of the composition is regulated by adding the required amount of water.

Since shopping for tricky ingredients is essential, you can look into using other supplements as well. Special antifreezes will help the paint and varnish material better tolerate low temperatures, flame retardants will make the composition resistant to high temperatures and fire.

Textured

Stylish modern renovations are characterized by the use of textures that are significantly different from smooth and even surfaces. For wall decoration, special textured paint is often used, which is a cheaper substitute for expensive repairs using natural stone, sand, and so on.

The variety of finished products cannot be replicated at home, but the simplest varieties can be made by yourself.

The basis for such experiments will be acrylic paint of any type. To give the characteristic rough texture, a filler is needed, which can even be made from ordinary putty.

For something a little more sophisticated, you can head to the hardware store for granite crystals or bricks-and-mortar sand to give the paint the appropriate texture.

Specialists pay special attention to the fact that the use of ordinary river or sea sand instead of clean construction options is not encouraged due to the heterogeneity and size of the fraction, and this does not contribute to good adhesion.

Other options

Recipes for different types of paints are quite numerous and strongly depend on the type of surface to be painted and the required properties. In particular, the huge the so-called Finnish paint has gained popularity for outdoor work… It is heat resistant and designed primarily for wood, but also suitable for concrete and various types of roofing.

A large bucket of such paint requires: 8 liters of hot water, 1 kg of rye flour, 1 kg of ferrous sulfate, 120 g of kitchen salt, 0.8 liters of drying oil and 4 kg of ocher. The same recipe can be found everywhere on the Internet, although in each case the proportions may be slightly different. For coloring roofs, a Finnish recipe is usually used with a doubled drying oil content.

For home use, decorative types of paints are often made, for example, stained glass or for painting on glass… In most cases, the basis is the same acrylic paint, and it remains only to understand what to add in order for the composition to acquire the desired properties. Thus, marker paint is obtained by adding polyurethane and epoxy resin to an acrylic dispersion, which provide it with smoothness and elasticity in combination with water-repellent properties.

Any paint becomes fireproof by adding the right types of flame retardantand the metallic color can be complemented with a characteristic texture through the addition of metal chips.

Rubber and powder paintwidely used in the automotive industry are almost the only paints and varnishes that are usually not made at home due to the complexity of the process and the inability to get all the necessary ingredients of proper quality.

Helpful hints

For those who are just experimenting with creating homemade paints, a few more proven tips will be useful:

  • When mixing paints on wood (in particular for furniture), the use of a flame retardant in the recipe is mandatory, because only this component guarantees that the surface will not contribute to the spread of fire.
  • If a century-old service is required from a painted surface, it is foolish to rely on water-based paints. The widespread use of acrylic dispersion as a base is due precisely to the fact that such a base is very durable, therefore it is worth overpaying for it.

  • Any thinner should be used wisely as the paint must remain thick enough. In the case of water-based paints, water becomes a real drying agent and promotes sagging on the painted surface. In the case of an acrylic base, the added solvent can play such a negative role, although in some cases its use is justified by the end purposes.
  • Texture paint will turn out to be cheaper and more natural looking if you use a substance of a similar shade as a filler. A structural black or pearlescent mixture is usually made using sand of the same color.
