It is not always possible to purchase new furniture, but you can update it, make a more interesting option out of old things or inexpensive furniture thanks to wood stain processing. With the help of such a tool, even from cheap furniture, you can make a very unusual and interesting option, giving inexpensive types of wood the look of noble and expensive furniture.
Features of the
Wood has always been the most demanded material, even newfangled materials do not compete with it. Rooms with wooden furniture or finishes using this natural material will always have a winning look and create a special atmosphere. Wood products require constant care. With the help of a stain, you can protect its surface from the following factors:
- from high humidity;
- from external factors that adversely affect the surface;
- from direct sunlight;
- prevent dirt and scratches.
Covering old furniture or surfaces with stain will not make it new, but it is quite possible to give it a stylish and unusual look. Staining wooden surfaces is the easiest way, which allows the material to appear in the most advantageous shade.
Wood stain penetrates the material without leaving a layer like conventional paints do. The application of stain allows you to achieve a quick change in the color of the product, to give it a more interesting look, to emphasize the structure without overlapping it. To date, stains have already appeared, thanks to which it is possible to increase the exploitation of wooden surfaces, moreover, they do not have a disinfecting property.
You can protect the material and extend the life of wooden surfaces and plywood products by treating them with stain. Such a coating is called stains, it serves to protect the surface from pests that may be on wooden products. These funds are divided into aqueous and non-aqueous, the latter are also divided into oil and alcohol.
Water stain is considered the most common; you can purchase a ready-made product or in powder. This is the most common type, in the arsenal there is a huge selection of various shades, ranging from light colors to the darkest shade. The color intensity depends on the amount of powder. Water stain is odorless, so you can work with it even indoors, which is an undoubted advantage of this product.
But it also has its drawbacks. During spreading, it slightly lifts the fibers on the surface to be treated, as a result of which the moisture susceptibility of wood coatings increases. It takes at least 12-14 hours to completely dry the surface.
When choosing a water stain, it is recommended to pre-moisten the wooden surface, then sand it with sandpaper, thereby removing the raised fibers, and then apply the product.
After working with it, the surface can be varnished. Before starting work, the product should be stirred very thoroughly so that small particles do not remain.
Alcohol stain in its composition contains aniline dye, which dissolves in denatured alcohol. Can be used as a finished product or in powder form.The undoubted advantage in working with this tool is that such stains dry out literally within half an hour, because the composition contains volatile alcohol. Alcohol stains can be tricky to work with, as stains can form on the surface if they dry very quickly. To avoid this, use a spray gun.
It is produced in dry form, for use it is dissolved with white spirit. The basis for the product is most often flax oil, so it can rightfully be considered safe and environmentally friendly. In the oil environment, the dyes dissolve, which allows you to achieve the most interesting shades. This tool is popular with decorators. The stain dries quickly enough (in just 2-3 hours).
In the process of application, the wooden fibers do not rise, it is applied without the appearance of stains, during the process a film forms on the surface.
New types of wood protection products have already appeared: acrylic and wax. During their production, all the disadvantages of other types were taken into account, they should be attributed to the new generation of tools for working with wood surfaces. The color palette is much more interesting and varied - from natural shades to unusual exotic ones.
Acrylic stain, in addition to its undoubted advantages, has disadvantages. If applied in more than two coats, stains can appear on the surface, and it is also quite expensive. Wax is not used when processing with polyurethane. By applying this product, the stain does not saturate the surface, but creates a layer that protects the wood.
If you add acid or hydrogen peroxide to the stain, you can get a discolored bar, which can then be painted.
There are other types of wood stains, they are made independently. Such products are inexpensive and environmentally friendly, have a wide variety of shades: oak, walnut and other tree species. One has only to choose the desired color scheme and apply the composition to the surface.
Colors and effects
For the treatment of wooden surfaces, stain is used. When you mention it, the surface immediately appears brown. For many consumers, this color seems to be the most relevant. Having studied the features of the product, its color scheme, it becomes clear that this product has a wide variety, which allows you to give the interior a new and unique look. Thanks to a wide variety of assortments, any colors and shades can be selected.
When choosing a color, one should be guided by the fact that the composition will appear differently on different surfaces. Even if there is a certain color on the samples presented in the store, it is better to first check it at home on a small area of the treated surface and make sure that the tone matches. Although the manufacturer indicates the tone on the package, on different surfaces the color may appear differently, since natural materials absorb the composition and acquire completely new shades.
By treating the surface with water or alcohol stains, you can achieve a natural effect. When choosing a tool, you should consider what effect you plan to achieve. You can ennoble a room in a matter of hours if you apply oak or ebony to the surface. After processing, mahogany will look more red, while maple, due to its density, practically does not change color when applied.
When applied to the porous surface of a poplar, the color of its coloring will change. The oak will have a pronounced pattern due to its structure. Often neutral tones are chosen for processing. You can choose dark shades and take the color mocha, walnut, mahogany or cognac.
Treatments for wood surfaces are available in a wide variety of colors, making the old finish immediately more interesting.Surfaces treated with oak, beech, cherry and teak stains are original.
For processing wood, not only store-bought stains are used, the surface can be treated with means obtained from plants
- Larch is suitable for giving products a red hue; a decoction from its bark will help to achieve this effect. The tree will turn redder when covered with onion peel decoction.
- Milled walnut shells will help to achieve unusual shades. The powder is boiled, at the end of boiling soda is added. The addition of fringe results in a rich reddish tone. If you add acetic acid, the color will turn gray.
- When using walnut powder and apple tree bark, a brown color can be achieved, with the addition of alum, the color becomes dark brown.
- When applying a decoction of unripe buckthorn fruits, you can get a golden hue.
You can achieve a varied color palette and get an interesting rich color, such as wenge, oregon, pine or a shade of bog oak, black, using stains based on tea, coffee and vinegar.
- The use of coffee allows you to achieve a brown tint. Grind coffee beans and add baking soda, or make instant coffee and apply to the surface.
- You can add a dark brown color using regular tea leaves. The strength of the brew affects the color saturation.
- The ebony effect can be achieved using metal and vinegar. For this, metal products are poured for at least 2 days, and defended in a well-ventilated place.
- To give the product cherry shades, potassium permanganate is used. After processing with potassium permanganate, at the rate of 50 g per 1 liter of water, the surface is varnished so that the material does not fade in the sun.
The color palette is so diverse that it is difficult to decide which color to take. You can dwell on neutral shades, choose a colorless option. The color palette allows you to use unusual shades: yellow, green, orange, emerald green. Blue stain, white or blue - this is not a complete list of colors for renewing wooden surfaces.
When applying the product to the surface, you need to be as careful as possible. If in the process of work there are difficulties, the advice of professionals will help.
- If streaks form, remove the top coat as soon as possible before the stain is dry. After it dries, another layer is applied, and then both are removed. If the surface is already dry, use a solvent.
- If spots appear on the surface, a plane is used to eliminate them.
- If the work is carried out on a surface of coniferous trees, the resin should be removed from them, since they will not absorb the product well and the color will not change.
- By applying water stain, the material is moistened, so that the dye is better absorbed.
- When applying, it is best to use a brush, roller, foam or cloth swabs, spray gun.
To choose the right tool, you should immediately decide what the end result will be. For a slight shade, a water-based stain will do. The same result can be obtained by choosing an alcohol-based product, in addition, the alcohol will protect the surface from fungus and bacteria. Alcohol and water products allow you to emphasize the naturalness of wood, easily imitate the natural surface.
If you want to completely change the color, you can use oil-based stains. To give the tree nobility, they choose the color of ebony or Peruvian walnut, with their help you can revive even completely nondescript products.
For tinting furniture made of wood and other surfaces, a concentrate dye is used. To dilute these products, use nitrosolvents, nitrobait, or water stains.In this case, the tone of the surface to be treated will depend on the base, the number of layers and the chemical composition. Dye concentrates offer tremendous opportunities for wood finishing. With the right choice, they will improve the appearance.
