Modern technologies make it possible to make independent home repair an affordable and exciting experience. If earlier the concept of "leveling the walls" meant, first of all, the search for a specialist who could do it, and many owners were simply baffled, today it is enough to paste over the walls with plasterboard, and you have a perfectly flat surface. It is fast, it is inexpensive, and, most importantly, it can be done by hand.

Features of the

A universal building material - drywall - allows for little money and in a short time to independently align the walls, mount an interior partition and much more. A drywall sheet consists of two layers of cardboard glued together with a layer of gypsum. The standard sheet size is 2500x1200x12.5 mm. Such a sheet has an area of 3 square meters and weighs about 30 kg. On sale you can find drywall and other sizes.

In practice, two options are used for fastening drywall sheets:

  • using a steel profile;
  • using special glue.

The first method involves the installation of a special metal structure for further fastening of gypsum plasterboards. This requires additional financial costs, as well as at least minimal editing skills.

To work with the second method, it is important to know how to glue the slab to the wall. Glueing drywall sheets can be done on any wall surface, you just need to remember that drywall is basically paper (albeit quite hard), and like any paper, it is afraid of moisture. Therefore, drywall is intended only for interior decoration.

Types of glue

The choice of adhesive solution directly depends on the appearance of the surface on which the drywall will be glued.

In hardware stores, you can find special adhesives that can be used when working with drywall

  • Ceresit - This is a tile glue, but gypsum plasterboard can also adhere well to it.
  • PerlFix - allows you to adhere drywall to porous surfaces such as brick walls. An inexpensive and easy-to-prepare composition that can be easily used in self-repair.
  • Fugenfuller is a dry putty, diluted with water, mixed by hand, thinly applied with a roller.

  • Silicone glue. It is used in the event that it is necessary to stick ceramic tiles or a mirror on drywall.
  • Knauf Fugen. This composition is used for gluing gypsum board to wall surfaces that do not have defects. Has a plastic consistency. It is applied very thinly.
  • Polyurethane foam. Convenient and easy-to-use material, inexpensive in cost. For this reason, it is most often used in work with drywall.

Scope of application

The surfaces intended for pasting the gypsum board are conventionally divided into three groups according to the material from which the wall is made.

  • Aerated concrete slabs. They are characterized by a relatively smooth surface. Irregularities are small, no more than half a centimeter. Drywall can be glued to aerated concrete with any glue. The most common is polyurethane foam.
  • Wall of foam blocks. The surface of the foam block must first be well treated with deep penetration soil. Allow the foam block to dry well for 12 hours. In drywall, every 40 cm, make holes with a diameter of 2-2.5 cm, apply PerlFlix glue on the wall, then glue the drywall, and remove excess glue that has come out through the holes with a spatula. At the same time, good reinforcement will be provided, which is important when using foam blocks.

Brickwork. When pasting brick walls, they come depending on the appearance of the surface. Any glue can be used for even laying. For uneven brick surfaces, PerlFlix is ideal. The glue is applied to the sheets in a dotted manner along the perimeter. The thickness of the glue layer varies from 5 to 30 mm, the distance between the "points" should be about 30-50 centimeters

A special moisture-resistant drywall is used for the kitchen and bathroom.

If necessary, drywall can be glued to a layer of insulation, for example, to a penoplex. In this case, the insulation is glued directly to the wall using any tile adhesive, and after drying, drywall is glued to it.

Preparing for installation

Before you start gluing drywall directly, you need to prepare walls, tools, buy glue and a sufficient number of drywall sheets.

The amount of drywall is calculated by the area of the glued surface of the walls, assuming that one standard sheet has an area of three square meters. The area of the walls is divided into three, this will be the required number of sheets of drywall.

The amount of glue is also determined depending on the area of the glued surface. The manufacturer indicates the consumption per square meter on the packaging.

You will need the following tools:

  • putty knife;
  • container for diluting glue;
  • several blocks of wood;
  • knife;
  • pencil;
  • plumb line;
  • reinforcing tape;
  • sealant.

To prepare a wall for pasting with plasterboard, you must:

  • determine with the help of a plumb line the degree of curvature of the wall;
  • remove all protruding elements from the wall: nails, dowels;
  • remove from the surface the remnants of old wallpaper, other finishes, ideally - clean it up to a brick or concrete base;
  • clean the surface from dust, dirt, old primer;
  • draw lines on the floor and ceiling, it is along them that the sheets will be aligned;
  • treat the surface of the wall with a primer, choosing it depending on the material from which the wall is made.

After all the preparation activities are completed, you can start gluing. The sequence of actions depends on whether the drywall is glued to a flat or uneven surface.

Perfectly pasted over with plasterboard surfaces, the irregularities of which are no more than 5 mm.

Drywall is attached to such bases by performing a series of sequential actions

  • Prepare the glue according to the instructions on the package. The diluted glue is not stored for a long time, so there is no need to dilute a large portion.
  • Place several centimeter-thick blocks on the floor along the wall to be pasted. This will provide air for the adhesive to dry.
  • Place a sheet of drywall horizontally on the floor, placing wooden blocks under it. This makes it easy to lift it off the floor.

  • Apply continuous strips of adhesive around the perimeter and in the middle of the sheet using a notched trowel. In this case, it is necessary not to allow the glue to come out on the joint of the sheet.
  • Lift the sheet and, placing it on the bars, press it against the wall.
  • Align the sheet with the lines drawn on the floor.
  • Glue the following sheet in the same way.

Plasterboard laying begins from the corner, gradually filling the entire wall. The sheets are placed end to end. It is necessary to periodically check the straightness of the laying with a building level.

The seams between the gypsum boards must remain even and have a dense filling. Excess glue from the seams is removed with a spatula. The glue will dry for about 3-4 days. After that, the supporting bars are removed, and the cracks are sealed with a sealant.

To glue drywall to a wall of concrete or brick with irregularities of 0.5 - 2 centimeters, they do almost the same, only use a different glue and apply it differently.

  1. The glue is applied pointwise. The diameter of the "point" is 1.5 centimeters. The distance between such "points" is about 30 centimeters. For large flaws, use PerlFlix glue. Just as in the first case, glue is applied along the perimeter and center, or diagonally.
  2. After applying the glue, the canvas is placed on the bars, aligned with the markings and pressed against the wall.

If the defects on the surface are large, in order to obtain a better result, a frame is made of drywall strips

  • The canvas is cut into strips, each 10 centimeters wide.
  • The strips are glued vertically, 50 centimeters apart, using PerlFlix glue.
  • Check the location of the stripes strictly in one plane. The appearance of the future surface depends on a well-formed frame.
  • The frame is allowed to dry for 2-3 days.
  • Plasterboard sheets are glued to the dried frame using Fugenfuller or liquid nails.

After the glue has completely dried, it is necessary to putty the joints:

  • apply a leveling putty;
  • press in the reinforcing tape;
  • after drying, apply a layer of leveling putty to the joints;
  • seal the gap at the junction with the floor with sealant.

If, in the process of work, all the subtleties of installation are correctly observed, then even the initially uneven wall after pasting with drywall will look perfectly plastered. After all, it is not for nothing that drywall is often called dry plaster.

Cosmetic finishing is done only after all materials are completely dry.

Tips & Tricks

Properly glued drywall is only half the battle. This is followed by finishing work: pasting the gypsum board with wallpaper, tiling or painting.

Drywall is of different types

  • GKL - standard plasterboard sheet. It is used for interior decoration of rooms with normal humidity.
  • GKLV - gypsum plasterboard with hydrophobic impregnation. Used for finishing kitchens, bathrooms and toilets.
  • GKLVO - gypsum plasterboard, which, in addition to moisture-resistant impregnation, has a fire-resistant treatment. Has high heat resistance. Used for finishing baths and saunas.

Drywall must be prepared for gluing wallpaper or tiles, otherwise various troubles may arise

  • the fall of the wallpaper or the lagging of the tiles due to the rapid pulling of the gypsum board of all moisture from the adhesive composition;
  • protruding grooves in the places of longitudinal joining of drywall;
  • a very noticeable joint of wallpaper when the joint seams on the wallpaper and drywall match.

Drywall processing before finishing consists of the following stages, performed in strict sequence:

  • padding;
  • reinforcement of seams with serpyanka;
  • puttying;
  • grinding.

The primer is used for deep impregnation of finishing surfaces or based on acrylic suspensions. Much depends on the quality of the selected primer: this is the degree of adhesion of the solution to the surface of the gypsum board, and the quality of gluing the wallpaper. The priming process itself consists in thoroughly covering the surface of the gypsum board with a strengthening solution without gaps. The work is done with a roller, and in inaccessible places, for example, in the corners, use a paint brush.

There is no need to prime moisture resistant drywall. It has already been impregnated by manufacturers. In this case, only the places where the putty was made are primed - joints, flaws.

Primer the wall in one layer. The primed surface is allowed to dry for 4-5 hours.

After drying, it is necessary to glue everything - both longitudinal and transverse seams with a serpentine. Serpyanka is a self-adhesive fiberglass mesh. It has different widths. In this case, stripes 10 centimeters wide are used. Although the mesh is self-adhesive, it must be well pressed onto the surface. And the serpyanka is also afraid of drafts, and quickly disappears under the air currents.

Sewing the seams with a serpentine allows you to strengthen and mask the seams, making them subsequently almost invisible. Then a glue-putty is prepared, which is literally pushed into the seams by transverse movements of the spatula. It is necessary to fill the seam as completely as possible, but so that the putty does not protrude to the surface. Do it twice.

After drying, the walls are covered with a thin layer of finishing solution. Allow to dry.

Grinding the surface allows you to correct the flaws of all the previous stages. It is carried out without unnecessary fuss, lightly brushing the abrasive along the plane of the wall.

Tips and tricks from experienced craftsmen on the technology of working with drywall will allow you to perform the work with high quality. As a result, the walls in the room will become perfectly flat, and the sheets will hold firmly.

  • All electrical work is carried out during the preparation of the walls. If necessary, channels are made in the wall for wiring. In the gypsum board, neat holes are made in advance for sockets and switches.
  • Drywall can only be glued to the plastered surface if the plaster is in excellent condition or there is no lime layer.
  • In this case, both conditions must be fulfilled simultaneously. If the slightest errors are found, the plaster layer must be removed.
  • To provide additional strength, use dowels, 4 for each plate.
  • Works are performed at a temperature not lower than +10 degrees.
  • Having bought drywall, it is left for several days in the room in which it will be glued.
  • Cut drywall in such a way that a gap of 1 centimeter remains between the sheet and the floor. This is done in order to protect the drywall from moisture from the floor.

  • The selected material must meet the requirements of the room.
  • The material must be of good quality. Then the walls made of gypsum plasterboard will last more than 10 years.
  • All work steps must be followed. Ignoring, for example, priming can turn into unpleasant surprises in the form of cracks, decay, chips in a year.
  • You must use professional tools that can be purchased at any hardware store.
  • For cutting drywall, a regular painter's knife is suitable.
  • To remove scratches from the surface of drywall, a reinforcing tape is used: the damage is expanded, filled with putty, a tape is applied on top and pressed into the plaster.

Do not forget about the little things, because they are very important for a high-quality work result.
