Drywall is a very popular building material. With it, you can do any job: align a wall or make an interior partition. Often, with the help of plasterboard sheets, various arches or structures with increased complexity are formed.
When erecting such structures, it is often necessary to minimize the number of joints between gypsum boards. To avoid careful fitting of each such joint, its soil, reinforcement and filling, experts are increasingly resorting to preliminary preparation of drywall - to its milling.
This process allows not only to accurately cut sheets of material, but also to create a variety of holes in the gypsum board, as well as cut grooves of complex geometry.
Drywall is a rectangular sheet of small thickness. It consists of a gypsum layer, which is covered on both sides with construction paper - cardboard. Due to the fact that the material is simple and easy to use, it is quite possible to install it yourself - you just need to stock up on the necessary tools in advance.
Drywall in its composition does not contain harmful substances and chemicals, so it is absolutely safe for health. The product can serve for a long time, but only in those rooms where the humidity is not high, otherwise it will simply deteriorate.
Plasterboard sheets vary in color and size. Its thickness is different: 8, 12.5, 16.5, etc.and the color is gray or blue. But there are such types as GKLV (moisture resistant gypsum plasterboard), GKLO (material with increased fire resistance), GKLOV (fire and moisture resistant drywall).
Advantages and disadvantages
Milling drywall, like any other construction process, has its advantages:
- Save time… The use of the considered technological process reduces the costs of working time during the construction of boxes and corners. Without exception, everything is done significantly quickly. In addition, there is no way to spoil the material if you follow all the tips.
- Reducing the number of open ends… This makes the structure neat, and also greatly simplifies work: there is no need for putty and sanding. Plus, you don't need to fix everything except the folds, which dramatically reduces costs and can save you time.
- Possibility of forming systems without erecting a frame… If the box or coal ledge is not a load, then you can not increase the profile of similar components. They themselves have good hardness and will last for many years without deformation.
The disadvantage of this method, perhaps, is only the fact that for work you will have to buy a milling machine. However, if you do not often do repair work in your own home, it is easier to use a tool rented from a store or from acquaintances.
The maintenance cost is low, so you will save substantial money.
To form a groove, you will need a special device - an electric milling cutter. It is not recommended to buy expensive professional equipment in case the specialist is not in any way fond of processing drywall regularly and he needs it for his individual needs. In this case, you can limit yourself to an economical view - the conditions for the milling cutter are not so demanding.
Milling should only be done in a smooth and hard plane., excluding a slight sag of the leaf. Experts advise using workbenches (often deliberately, without the help of other blanks for these purposes).
However, you can do without them by performing the procedure on a smooth floor plane or on a stack of sheets.
V-shaped cutter used to select the required groove, is considered a curvilinear device. For this reason, in order to obtain straight directions of bending, you cannot limit yourself in any way without the use of specialized rushing tires or different templates.
They are made, as a rule, from scrap materials, the most common of which is plywood. In order to make a straight cut, the template is fixed on drywall, after which the electric milling cutter is guided along its border.
From among the popular manufacturers of electrical appliances for processing drywall, cutters of the following brands are used:
- Bosch - this type of product is in great demand, as it has great technical capabilities;
- "Anchor" - the equipment of this brand is made of strong high-quality material, contains soldering from a hard alloy, is durable and has a long service life;
- "Globe" - the brand is known for the release of a durable device designed for processing hard or soft wood.
- Sekira - for the production of devices of this brand, hard alloys, high-speed steel are used - this makes it strong and comfortable to work with.
The choice of brand depends on the surface of the drywall, the size of the machine or the cost. In addition, it must fit the technical process.
A disc milling cutter with a Strong cutter is needed to form rectilinear grooves and sawing the drywall itself. Its advantages are speed and cleanliness. But for creating grooves of a more complex shape, this tool will not work.
The router performs milling of the gypsum board. Often it is used to cut more complex grooves and create a variety of hole shapes: round, oval and others. This tool uses a Festool cutter.
Milling drywall sheets makes it possible to bring to life the most unusual design ideas that could never have been realized with a knife. Only milling makes it possible to acquire a flawlessly smooth edging, which is especially significant in variants where several elements are joined in one plane.
Specialized cutters are used for any case. The following varieties are often used:
- straight - makes grooves and holes at an angle of 90 degrees;
- edging nozzle - used only when chamfering is required;
- T-shaped - allows you to create extremely large holes;
- U-shaped - forms the grooves of a semicircular figure;
- V-shaped - used for sawing triangular grooves.
As a rule, such a set of cutters should be available to any highly professional specialist who often needs to use such nozzles for processing drywall sheets. A home craftsman for processing gypsum board will have a V-shaped cutter as the main one.
The Festool V-cutter can be used to produce a wide variety of plasterboard products, while the sides will dock at right angles.
This feature allows you to create straight corner surfaces with a minimum of seams. When selecting, you should pay attention to the size: it must fit the router. This is often 32 mm in diameter.… But in order to mill the gypsum board, you need to know how to use it, and also buy a good mill.
In order to use a V-cutter, you need to purchase a milling machine. Such equipment is quite expensive, so not everyone will be able to afford it.To mill drywall yourself, you do not need expensive fixtures, you can do the work with a handheld device. The prices for hand tools are low, the device performs any cutting of drywall, and most importantly, that it is fast.
Using a hand tool, you can easily change the angle of the cutter.
Before starting work, you need to adjust the cutter so that the nozzle itself does not damage the bottom layer. After that, you can start working directly with the tool. If you do not indicate the exact cut point, then make a mistake… In this case, you will have to take another sheet of drywall and start this process again. In order to get started, you should attach a measurement for a cut and draw a router along the marked lines.
If you want a perfect cut, milling the back of the sheet as well if possible. To do this, carefully turn the sheet over and go along the marked lines with the tool.
The milling technology allows you to make any shape of the structure, but you need to follow the above rules - only then will you get the desired result.
If you milling without connecting a vacuum cleaner, it will lead to pollution of the room.
It is better not to perform milling on wood, since wood is denser than drywall, so the edge will turn out to be rough and ugly.
For good work, you only need to use high-quality cutters - take care of this in advance!
If finances allow, it is better to purchase a full set of cutters for work. The kit allows you to make the desired cut and cut out a certain part of a different shape. The presence of a large number of attachments will also allow you to process material at any degree of inclination.
But novice craftsmen are advised to buy cheaper cutters, since you need to learn how to work with a router. Later, you can buy new, more expensive kits.
You should buy cutters in special hardware stores. There you can find their different types and different price categories. It remains only to do everything with your own hands.
