Features of the

The lining got its name due to the fact that it was originally used for covering passenger cars from the inside. Over time, it ceased to be a part of the railways, but found application in interior decoration of various premises, including baths.

  • The lining is environmentally friendly, simple and easy to use.
  • Allows to reduce costs and time for heating the bath.
  • Prevents condensation and mold growth in rooms with high humidity.
  • Hides bumps and cracks, electrical wiring.
  • In a heated room, the tree gives off substances beneficial to human health, which is an undoubted advantage for a steam room.

The choice of a lining of one type or another for a steam room depends on the properties of various types of wood, the preferences given in favor of one or the other wood, as well as on the costs that lie ahead when decorating the room. Pine board, as well as lining from other coniferous wood, with all its advantages for a steam room, is not the best choice, since it emits resin.

Hardwoods are preferable - aspen, linden, alder, oak, ash. They do not heat up in high temperature conditions, which is important from the point of view of comfort and safety in the steam room.

Each of the breeds has other advantages as well. Linden is able to create a unique atmosphere in the steam room, does not dry out, is durable, has a beautiful color and texture.

Aspen is a soft tree that is comfortable to work with. The positive side is that over time it gains strength. Such material is easy to care for. If the aspen darkens, you can return it to its former color by sanding it. It is also believed that this tree takes away negative energy from a person. This aspect is also taken into account by some people when choosing a lining.

From the point of view of usefulness for the human body, the alder board is interesting for the large amount of tannins contained in this wood, which have an anti-inflammatory effect, destroy bacteria. Alder absorbs moisture well and retains heat. But the lining made of this tree is distinguished by a high price and not everyone expresses the desire to choose it for finishing work.

It will be even more expensive to use oak material. It is not easy to process, although it then serves for a very long time.

In a room with high humidity, oak wood can be used without special processing - it will not rot. Ash is just as expensive and rarely used for decorating the steam room and the entire bath.

When choosing lining, you need to take into account such a factor as the grade of wood, which determines the durability of the material. The best grades include boards of level "Extra", "A" and "B". Class "C" lining is not suitable for covering a steam room. There are no knot marks on the surface of quality specimens. This is a very important indicator, since boards with such "marks" will inevitably crack over time in a steam room.

How to sheathe?

There are two ways to sheathe the walls with a pair of clapboard. It can be mounted horizontally or vertically. It is believed that the vertical fastening of the panels allows you to cope with the finish faster than the horizontal method of placing them. This arrangement allows you to quickly clean the surface of the walls from condensation, because it easily flows down. With this approach to finishing the steam room, it is better to use a lining equipped with grooves and ridges, allowing you to securely and simply connect the boards to each other.

When the lining is laid horizontally, the connecting ridge is at the top of the board, which also prevents liquid from getting under the skin. The vertical sheathing, which is mounted under this installation, helps the air to circulate freely between the wall and the panels.

Also, the positive side of this method to decorate the steam room from the inside is the convenience of further maintenance of the room. Boards located near the floor usually always remain wet, and therefore deteriorate earlier than others. It is much easier to notice the bottom row of panels than to cut a vertically attached lining from below, and even more so to change it entirely.

The quality of finishing with clapboard in the steam room will largely depend on how correctly the lathing is mounted under it. For its device, a bar is used, which must be covered with a primer.

Starting the installation with your own hands, the first step is to attach waterproofing to the wall. It can be nailed to the wall or fixed with battens. The waterproofing is followed by a layer of mineral wool between the blocks. A layer of cotton wool is covered with foil, which can "return" the heat to the steam room. It is overlapped and fixed with aluminum tape. Then a counter-batten is nailed, which creates a ventilation gap between the vapor barrier and the facing board.

In the course of insulation under the lining, it is necessary to provide points for ventilation holes. One of them should be under the ceiling, and the other at the level of 15-30 centimeters from the floor near the stove.

The lining is fastened secretly, since the metal product chosen for fastening and twisted in an open way gets very hot in the steam room. Touching it, you can get, if not a burn, then very unpleasant sensations on the skin. In addition, such clamps can rust, ruining the lining itself, and an open mount will look very ugly.

Fastening options can be different - self-tapping screws, clamps and nails. If you use a self-tapping screw, it can be screwed on from the front side of the lining, but closed with a special plug made of wood, although this is not very convenient, therefore, clamps and nails are often used. The lining must be nailed to the crate (as well as screwed onto the screws). Due to the fastening of the boards to each other with grooves and spikes, the clamps are hidden. The fastening material itself must be galvanized in order to prevent corrosive processes.

As for the work on the additional processing of the lining after its installation, there is no single opinion on this matter. Some believe that this is harmful, since at a high temperature in the room, the smell of the impregnation itself will appear, which negatively affects the state of the human body. Others argue that it is necessary to process the cladding, because without this, the tree will quickly begin to rot. In this case, materials should be used on a natural basis.

It is best to treat the boards with natural oils or wax. If you saturate them with the same linseed or sunflower oil, the well-being of people who came to relax in the bathhouse will not be affected by his vapors, and the lining itself will maintain a "healthy state" for a very long time.

It will always be comfortable and useful inside the steam room, which is properly insulated and finished with such a coating.

Tips & Tricks

When forming the inner space of the steam room, some features of working with lining and its physical properties.

  • With a vertical arrangement of boards, the service life of such a coating may be less than with a horizontal one, because the temperature in the upper and lower parts of the board during the operation of the room is very different.
  • The vertically placed lining is appropriate in saunas, where the air is always dry. There the wood does not darken and retains its original beauty for a long time.

  • When placing the boards horizontally, the walls seem wider, the internal space seems to increase. If the steam room is small, this is a significant plus. Also, behind horizontally located boards, air passes better, since a vertical frame is used to fix the finishing material.
  • So that over time the lining in the steam room and in all other parts of the bath does not darken, rot and not become covered with mold, as well as lime deposits, it is advised to use modern means of treating its surface. These are acrylic water impregnations, oil-based impregnations and antiseptic agents of foreign and domestic production.

Beautiful examples

  • The horizontally arranged boards along the walls of the steam room, the elegantly designed ceiling design, and comfortable rounded shelves create a cozy and comfortable atmosphere in this room. The play of the shades of the boards gives the finish a mobility.
  • Due to the use of a carved casing on the window, wooden utensils and a simple bench, a steam room decorated with clapboard can be made in the old Russian style.
  • Competent use of wood texture, thoughtful play with geometry and color allow you to create a steam room in a modern style.
