An innovative and very unusual way of interior decoration is the use of 3D MDF panels made of fibreboard. They are appreciated not only for the fact that it is an environmentally friendly and safe finishing material for human health, but also for a very original design. As a result of processing on special equipment, the surface of the slab contains volumetric geometric effects, waves, carving, and so on. The use of MDF panels plays not only a decorative, but also a practical role as thermal insulation, because they are attached to the lathing, and the space between the wall and the facade, if the client wishes, is filled with insulation. And thanks to special protective coatings, 3D MDF panels will serve their owner for many years.

Features of the

3D effect boards are produced by gluing wood fibers. At the same time, the cost of the final product is significantly lower than that of natural wood. High temperature pressing method is used for production. Accordingly, there are different shapes for different panel collections.

The relief or texture can be glossy or matte. And some especially original and expensive copies can even glow in the dark.

Usually, for the production of such plates, a sheet of 280x120 cm is used, and the thickness of the panel as a result can reach 3 cm. The desired ornament is created on a special machine using milling technology. In the catalogs of manufacturing companies, customers can choose, as a rule, about fifty relief designs for application. You can even make a personal print according to the client's sketch, but it will cost many times more. Then the board is sanded and covered with a protective varnish, paint or veneer. And also, if desired, MDF panels can be decorated with abrasive particles.

Among the shortcomings, we note the problems when replacing damaged areas. And also difficulties can arise with the care of such panels and their cleaning, because dust easily accumulates in convex places.

Scope and use in the interior

3D MDF panels can have different textures and prints, decorating not only walls, but also ceilings, partitions and even furniture. In contrast to conventional gypsum wall panels, the innovative finishing material with a three-dimensional effect can, for example, decorate furniture or interior doors. Since the panels are made of natural materials and do not pose a threat to health, they can also be used to decorate living quarters where we spend as much free time as possible - for example, a living room, bedroom or nursery. Although experts warn the owners that some ornaments can tire the eyes, therefore it is recommended to carefully approach the choice of texture.

You can use panels for dwelling zoning. But also an effective design technique is the creation of embossed zones on the walls to create a modern interior. For example, you can lay out such panels for a fireplace area or any place that you would like to highlight in the room. 3D MDF panels can cover the entire wall or part of it. For example, a volumetric wall covering can be created against the background of the sofa area, or they can be used to decorate the bar counter in the living room.

As for furniture using 3D panels, it can be both standard wardrobes and dressers, as well as furniture for a bathroom or kitchen.

The panels can be set to the length or width of the room, and you can create any shapes and patterns - only your imagination limits you. And to further emphasize the 3D effect, highlight the panels with lighting that can be located not only on the ceiling or wall, but also on the floor. It all depends on the pattern used and the design of the panels.

Installation features

Before finishing the room with volumetric wood-fiber boards, you do not need complex wall treatment, the usual rough finish is quite suitable. And even if it is not perfectly flat, this is only a plus, because 3D panels are able to hide any surface defects, which is their indisputable advantage over other finishing materials.

Installation of 3D MDF panels is carried out on a plasterboard, brick or concrete surface using a profile that takes 3 to 4 cm of space between the wall and the panel. With this method of fastening, a frame is made of beams, which are pre-treated with an antiseptic. In this case, the horizontal panels are mounted to the beams located vertically, and the vertical panels are attached to the horizontally located frame. To attach to the bars, specialists usually use clamps.

If the frame "eats" up to 35 mm thickness, then installation on plates and corners is carried out without creating a gap between the wall and the panel. But you can also use the method of fastening with glue, but in this case you cannot fasten whole sheets, and plates with a maximum size of 800x800 mm. With the glue method of fastening, the surface will have to be pre-processed and leveled… When using liquid nails, make sure they match the color of the panels exactly. As a topcoat, both ordinary paint and gypsum, precious wood veneer, PVC film or special coatings, which will be discussed below, are used.

Varieties

Painted 3D MDF panels are produced both in accordance with the classic shades of enamels and paints presented in the catalogs, and with an additional application of a silver or gold patina.

MDF panels with 3D effect for walls covered with veneer of valuable species of wood (beech, cedar, ebony, mahogany, oak, walnut), as a rule, have milling grooves that can be covered with any shade of paint.

If such panels are covered with several layers of veneer at once, the surface texture resembles natural wood.

And also fibreboard can be covered with PVC film, and the production technology of such a finishing material resembles film facades for kitchens. With the help of PVC film, you can achieve imitation of the texture of wood, leather or enamel.

3D panels made of MDF with a special fluorescent coating are capable of emitting a weak glow at night (usually a blue-green hue), emphasizing the unusual texture of modern finishing material. This effect can last up to 10 hours. By the way, such panels are absolutely safe for humans and operate on such a principle that they accumulate light energy during the day, and "give it away" at night.
