There are one-component and two-component mixtures, there is also a division into specialized and household varieties. At home, an adapter in the form of a tube is used, while professionals prefer to use assembly guns.

Polyurethane foam was created in the late 1940s. The chemical composition is relatively light, the composition includes suspensions of hydrogen and oxygen, as well as liquid substrates. The expansion of the foam due to the chemical processes taking place in it helps it penetrate into cavities and distant corners that are unattainable with conventional methods. The foamy product is quite dense. It adheres well to many other materials and is resistant to tearing or compressive forces.

Advantages and disadvantages

Foam material is much easier and easier to use to achieve any of these goals than most other materials. It is safe for humans and pets, mechanically strong and almost non-allergenic. It is good to use the professional version, because the pistols significantly increase the penetrating power of the material. But the household variety is much better suited for the production of minor work. Even when the atmosphere around is very humid, the temperature constantly changes over a wide range, the foam tolerates such influences stably.

As shown by expert studies, 1 cm of polyurethane sealant, after curing, retains heat to the same extent as 1.5-1.9 cm of polystyrene. For mineral wool, this coefficient is 1.8. Using just one cylinder of a typical capacity, two or even three windows or one door are easily installed (unless it is quite gigantic, of course).

In addition, the speed of work increases noticeably, which is important for both professionals and amateurs. Sometimes foam is even used to form various decorative shapes.

Selection Tips

Even if the packaging contains the GOST marking, this is still not enough. When using, you should check whether the pressure of the thrown mixture is the same, whether it is produced evenly. It is unacceptable to use a sealant that "floats" immediately from the desired surface. Small cells make the created layer stronger, it more easily tolerates high humidity and adheres more effectively to various surfaces. When assessing, you cannot be guided by the recommendations of sellers and descriptions in technical documentation, you need to carefully study the real reviews of consumers.

Recommendations for use

Any foam, regardless of the form of delivery (in cylinders or in barrels), the rules of use are the same:

  • put on gloves before using the sealant;
  • only gaps between 10 and 80 mm are covered;
  • the surface to be treated is wetted in advance;
  • the balloon needs to be shaken, turned upside down;
  • vertical slits are plugged with a "pillow" created from the bottom up;
  • you need to wait for a set of strength at least 8 hours after application;
  • taking into account the harmful effect of ultraviolet rays, plaster, putty or other sealant is applied on top.

Do not touch the foam layer until it has completely hardened. Otherwise, the fabrication of the barrier layer will be disrupted or it will gain the target density more slowly. Avoid contact of the sealant with eyes and mucous membranes! Even if it is immediately removed from there and the affected area is thoroughly rinsed with water, it is advisable to seek medical help.

The vertical seam must not leak. The curing layers of the sealant must be dimensionally stable. If the polyurethane foam is classified as water-resistant or immune to the action of various substances, only short-term protection is guaranteed. It is recommended to evaluate the quality of the cylinder and its marking, the integrity of the valves. Even the inscriptions are important, because blurry, fuzzy texts, missing letters, distorted colors, lack of labels or their illegibility are a sure sign, if not fake, then marriage.

The temperature of the container with foam should be carefully monitored. When heated to more than 50 degrees, it can explode.

About varieties

Tubular type - these are cylinders of the usual type, supplemented with an applicator. Household sealants of this category have a density of 20 to 23 kg per 1 sq. m and are presented on the market in a wide variety of shapes and from many manufacturers. So almost all customers will be able to choose the right product for themselves. Pistol foam has such an important advantage as low re-expansion (in other words, it behaves very predictably, it is easy to estimate how much the cured sealant will have). In addition, the professional type will harden faster and will be more stable in terms of chemical and mechanical changes.

One-part foam formulations expand much more the first time than the second. You can store them after purchase for 12-18 months. The two-component mixture eliminates the need to wet the surface, it is stored longer and differs in density from 30 to 40 kg per 1 sq. m.

"Summer" foam can be used at an air temperature of +5 degrees, while the cylinder must be heated to at least +10 degrees. Winter compositions due to special additives can solidify at negative air temperatures. All-season reagents can be used in temperatures down to -10 degrees, and the cylinder itself must still be warmed up to +5 degrees.

If the foam mixture has limited expansion, it is less suitable for filling cavities. In this case, a very thick and almost insurmountable protective layer is formed. Compared to alternative solutions, foam sealing can significantly reduce waste.It is best to cut off the laid sealant in the first 45 minutes after installation; having missed this period, you will have to either leave everything as it is, or blunt the tool.

If the cylinder says that its capacity is 1 liter, in reality there is only 0.75 liters of sealant inside. The remaining volume is occupied by the displacement gas. The action of moisture penetrating into the foam layer leads to its expansion by 0.5-3 times. The mass that leaves the tank acquires its final hardness after 24 hours. In this case, the temperature should be at least +5 degrees, maximum +35 degrees, and the relative humidity of the atmosphere - from 60%. In the specified temperature range, it is desirable to use any foam, because deviations from it are only permissible, but do not guarantee optimal properties.

Not only plaster, but also wallpaper can be applied to the layer of polyurethane foam. They will remain elastic and will not shrink. Foam protection perfectly manifests itself not only at the pipe entries into the walls, but also at the joints, at bends. It will help to fix the decorative wall panel, insulation and insulation coatings. As you read the guidelines for getting sealant out of a single bottle, it is helpful to keep in mind that these data refer to ideal situations where temperature and humidity are normal and foaming is not difficult.

In real working situations, the volume of the product that will saturate the gap or pass into the hidden cavity may even be 2 times less than the promised mass. Therefore, wise consumers always check how heavy the purchased cylinder is and will not take it if the manufacturer's coordinates are not indicated. Mounting adhesive foam is clearly not a product that can simultaneously stand out for its quality and cheapness. If possible, remove the slightest dirt before applying it.
