A sealant is a paste-like polymer composition that can have different viscosities. Its main purpose is the elimination and sealing of gaps, joining of various surfaces. A variety of sealants are its liquid modifications.

Characteristics

Liquid sealant is used to eliminate leaks in heating systems, gaps and joints between pipes, radiators and boilers. This composition is polymeric and is characterized by the ability to self-seal and is suitable for sealing gaps both inside and outside the system.

The principle of operation of the sealant is based on the effect of polymerization of the composition upon contact with air. The latter is inevitably present when the integrity of the heating system is violated.

Due to this feature, the use of a liquid product for sealing allows solving the following tasks:

  • sealing gaps that are inaccessible to visual perception;
  • elimination of cracks in hard-to-reach places where it is impossible to use a clamp or soldering;
  • elimination of leaks in the underfloor heating system without dismantling the walls and the floor itself, flooring;
  • sealing pipes with a hidden installation system.

Depending on the composition of the liquid sealant, several varieties are distinguished.

  • Acrylic. They differ in their environmental friendliness of the composition, good adhesion to various materials, but they do not tolerate high temperatures.
  • Silicone. They are characterized by versatility, since they are quite elastic, they are combined with the main types of materials for heating systems, and can be used for both hot and cold water pipes. All silicone formulations are subdivided into acidic and neutral. The former are unacceptable to use when working with metal parts, since they will provoke the appearance of corrosion, which, in turn, leads to the rapid destruction of surfaces.
  • Polyurethane. They are distinguished by improved adhesion indicators, resistant to high temperatures and sudden thermal changes, and do not lead to rust formation.

Compositions for threaded connections form a separate group of liquid sealants. Both solutions are based on silicone and make it possible to obtain a hermetic connection of threaded parts without the use of FUM tape and similar materials.

These thread sealants are drying and non-drying. The disadvantage of the former is the tendency to shrinkage after drying, which is fraught with cracks and depressurization of the seam. Non-drying modifications are devoid of this drawback, however, under strong pressure, they can be knocked out.

Another type of sealant of this type is anaerobic. Their principle of operation differs from that described above. Polymerization of the composition takes place exclusively in an airless environment.

Having a liquid consistency, the composition easily fills the gap space and, falling into airless conditions between the parts, solidifies.

The advantage of anaerobic compounds is their strength (used even in the military and aircraft construction), resistance to high and low temperatures and their abrupt change, chemical inertness (including to alkaline and acidic media), which practically does not limit its use depending on the type coolant.

The disadvantage of the composition of the anaerobic action is the super-strong connection formed by it, which sometimes makes it impossible to dismantle the parts.

Depending on the type of coolant, liquid pipe compositions can also be divided into several types:

  • for gas and solid fuel boilers;
  • for plumbing and heating systems;
  • for heating pipes with antifreeze.

Scope of application

Liquid sealant has a wide range of applications and can be used in various types of work.

  • Fixation of various surfaces. In this case, the sealant is similar to "liquid nails". It allows you to fasten together various materials, including materials of different textures. The resulting layer of the composition is transparent, invisible, but very durable - it can withstand up to 50 kg. Suitable for joining surfaces made of ceramics, glass, textiles, plastics and silicate substrates.
  • Plumbing work. Allows you to eliminate leaks that are not visible to the eye or located in hard-to-reach places, in heating systems, gas supply, water supply, sewer pipes. It is used for sealing the joints of sinks and pipes, pipes and radiator systems, boiler. It can be used both at home and in public institutions.
  • Car repair. Suitable for filling gaps in various car systems, can be used when replacing gaskets, in the car cooling system.

  • Liquid plastic sealants. Suitable for filling gaps in plastic windows and other PVC-based surfaces. They contain adhesive components, including PVA, due to which the solidity of the material is formed.
  • Work and operation involving harsh conditions. For these purposes, polyurethane foam compositions are used, characterized by increased resistance to moisture, high and low temperatures, and chemical reagents. Such solutions are called "liquid rubber" because the seam formed is similar to this material.
  • The scope of application of liquid sealants based on polyurethane foam also roofing works - filling joints and cracks. In this regard, the composition is sometimes called "sprayed waterproofing".
  • Polyurethane foam sealant can repair a puncture in a car tire. The inner surface of the wheels of vehicles operated in harsh conditions can also be sealed with this sealant. In this case, it plays the role of a protective layer.

For each type of work, material, a suitable composition should be selected.If you use an unsuitable sealant, you can at least not get the expected effect, at the most, provoke pipe rupture, the appearance of corrosion.

When choosing a composition for heating systems, it is important to take into account its compatibility with the coolant. Sealants designed for water are not suitable for pipes carrying antifreeze, corrosion inhibitor or brine solution. Finally, another selection criterion is the stability of the composition to high or low temperatures.

If the composition is poured into the heating system, then the same volume of the coolant in which the antifreeze will be poured should be drained from it. Before starting work, it is recommended to make sure that the boiler or expansion tank is in good working order. In some cases, a decrease in pressure is considered an indirect indication of the appearance of leaks, although the point is in the dysfunction of the tank or boiler.

When working, it should be borne in mind that the liquid sealant has a high polymerization rate, therefore, if it spills beyond the working bases, it is better to immediately eliminate the excess. After hardening, this will not be easy to do and is fraught with surface damage.

To remove the hardened sealant, it is better to use special solvents selected in accordance with the characteristics of the polymer composition. Before applying the solvent, it is important to make sure that it will not damage the surface to be cleaned. To do this, a small amount of the solution should be applied to a sample of material or in an inconspicuous place.

Complete solidification of the sealant occurs in 3-4 days. If it is poured into an aluminum system or with its elements, then a week after the work, the liquid from the pipeline should be drained and rinsed with clean water.

The sealant can replace “liquid nails”, demonstrating fixing and adhesion properties. But "liquid nails" differ in this from a sealant and cannot be used instead in a heating system or pipeline.

When working with liquid sealant, avoid contact with skin and mucous membranes. If this does happen, then it is necessary to rinse the affected areas with plenty of running water.
