The most important elements of the flush tank of any toilet bowl are the filling (inlet) and drain (outlet) valves. If the first of them malfunctions, either water will not flow into the tank, or its flow will be continuous. If the second valve malfunctions, there are also two possible options: the water cannot be flushed out and, on the contrary, the water is not drawn into the tank, but immediately drains into the toilet - nothing holds it in the tank.

In three cases out of four options for the development of events, the toilet cannot be fully used. Therefore, it will be important for each owner to know the device and principles of operation of the flush tank valves, as well as how to repair, adjust and replace them. Sometimes this knowledge will help to avoid bigger troubles than the banal inability to use the home toilet.

In addition, choosing valves when replacing them also becomes an easy task if the person knows all about them.

Device and principle of operation

Any of the valves under consideration is a collection of elements combined into a device that performs one or more common functions.

The intake valve design includes the following main elements:

  • water inlet fitting;
  • water shut-off valve;
  • float bar;
  • float.

The specified inlet valve, which shuts off the water when the required liquid level in the tank is reached, is integrated into the inlet connection.

The principle of operation of this device is quite simple

  1. When the tank is empty, the inlet valve is open, so water from the water supply system flows freely through the inlet into the drain tank.
  2. Since the drain valve is closed, the tank is filled with water - its level rises.
  3. As the liquid level rises, the inlet float begins to float. And since its rod is connected by a lever with the inlet valve, as the float rises, the lever gradually closes the shut-off valve, which affects the intensity of the stream of water passing through the fitting into the tank.

  4. When the float, together with the liquid level in the tank, reaches the set maximum level, the lever will completely close the inlet valve, as a result of which the flow of water into the drain tank is stopped.

This is where the function of the intake valve ends. In order for the drain to work, it is necessary to activate the drain valve, which contains:

  • a rod with a rubber seal that closes the tank drain hole;
  • one of the varieties of a device acting on the stem in order to move it to open the drain channel (button, lever, hood);
  • overflow pipe.

To drain the liquid from the tank for flushing, it is enough to press the release device - a button, a lever or a hood. This action will lift the stem covering the drain hole and the water will drain into the toilet.

Overflow pipe function consists in maintaining the water level in the tank not higher than the maximum possible in order to avoid flooding the apartment in the event of a malfunction of the inlet fittings, when it passes water in a closed or poorly regulated state. The overflow is made into the toilet flush line.

In more modern toilet models drain tanks can have a slightly different valve design, as well as one in which they not only work separately (autonomously), but also in a single unit. For example, diaphragm inlet valves combine their function with rod drain valves. The types of valves for cisterns will be discussed below.

By design

On this basis, the following types of drain and stop valves are distinguished:

  • inlet with a conventional float on a long rocker;
  • inlet with a float moving along a vertical rack;
  • inlet with a vertical stand for the float and a check valve for the bottom water supply;
  • membrane inlet;
  • inlet diaphragm in a block with a drain stem;
  • a conventional rod drain, operating independently of the inlet.

  • separate (autonomous), in which the drain and filling systems operate independently of each other;

There are many ways to control toilet flush valves, including modern ones: pneumatic, electronic and sensory. But mechanical options for influencing the flush system - push-button (keyboards) and rod (exhaust) ones - have gained particular popularity for residential buildings. Occasionally occurs lever a method where a handle with a chain or cord is attached to the lever, which must be pulled to open the flush.

There are such exclusive models among the rather expensive modern sanitary ware from leading manufacturers.

Push-button types of exhaust valves are often referred to as push. They, in turn, are subdivided into 3 types.

  3. Two-level (dual-mode) drain valves. They have 2 buttons, one of which performs a full drain of water from the tank. It has a size much larger than the second button, the function of which is to drain only part of the water in the tank. There are 2 drain holes in the design of such models.

According to the type of shut-off device, the float inlet valves are divided into 2 types

  • Reciprocating… Here, either the float itself, when it rises up, or the structural elements associated with it, displace the piston until the water is completely blocked. This type of shut-off valve is now considered obsolete.

  • Membrane… A rubber or silicone device that opens the path of water to the tank under the pressure of the jet. But when the water level reaches a certain mark, the pressure on the membrane from the outside and from the side of the liquid in the tank is equalized. Complete blockage of the inlet channel occurs due to the pusher acting on the membrane with a floating float.

Diaphragm valve - an advantageous solution that does not give much noise when collecting water and is distinguished by a high rate of level rise and a constant jet intensity.

Criterias of choice

If you choose a toilet in a block with a cistern to replace the old one, then, undoubtedly, you should pay attention to modern push-button models with the ability to save water… That is, it is better to choose a toilet that has a dual-mode drain and a membrane inlet valve. The main thing here is to choose correct type of release from the toilet, depending on the method of connection to the sewer riser.

And if you need to select fittings for the existing plumbing, then the main criteria will be the following:

  • compliance of the reinforcement design with the height and width of the tank;
  • suitable location of holes for water inlet and connection of the filling valve;
  • the location of the hole for the drain control device is similar.

Adjustment

One of the common causes of toilet flush cistern malfunctions is poor adjustment of its filling system. Hence, problems arise: leaks, insufficient flush pressure, contamination of the bowl, and so on.

The adjustment of the fittings in the tank can be done independently or by a professional

  1. The overflow is set so that the cut of the overflow pipe is located at the level of the upper generatrix of the float. In this case, you need to make sure that it is below any through hole in the walls of the tank (for example, for water supply, air circulation) at a distance of at least 1 cm.
  2. The level in the tank is adjusted with the lid removed.
  3. To avoid leaks through the overflow, the liquid level is set 5-10 mm below the cut of the overflow pipe. But first you should check the tightness of the valve piston to the seat. To do this, you need to supply water to the tank and manually press the piston against the seat. If it is dense, then the flow of water will stop.
  4. When filling the tank further, make sure that the drain valve is not leaking. If it is missed, the drain seal must be centered.
  5. If the liquid level has reached the desired level, but the inlet valve has not closed, you need to turn off the water supply and start adjusting. But first, find out the reason for the loose fit of the valve in the seat. Depending on the design of the float inlet system, the cause may be an incorrect float configuration, insufficient rocker bend, or lever length. All of the above can be corrected, although it is not always easy for a beginner to do this.

Possible malfunctions

Most of the toilet bowl malfunctions are associated precisely with the water fittings of the cistern. Here are the main problems (and possible solutions):

  • water flows continuously through the overflow (inlet adjustment or drain seal);
  • weak flush pressure (increase the water level);
  • leaks through the water supply holes to the tank (replace or seal the gaskets);
  • dirty water at the drain (clean the tank from deposits, install a filter on the water supply);

  • slow filling of the tank (dirty inlet valve).
