The porch is an adapter that splices the level of the lot with the level of the floor in the house. Therefore, it would not be entirely correct to build it without special reference to the style of the facade, materials used in other structural elements of the house and other nuances. Usually the porch is located on the side of the pediment; it can be narrow or wide, wooden or stone. But often a metal staircase leads to the porch. And you can do it yourself too.

Advantages and disadvantages

Metal is one of the durable materials that does not need advertising, but still it is worth recalling its pros and cons for those who decide on a metal staircase.

The advantages include:

  • the possibility of high-quality processing - the metal is able to take any shape;
  • increased strength - in this sense, wood cannot be compared with it, and subject to the technology, the correct selection of the sheet thickness, the staircase for the porch will withstand several decades of operation;
  • the material is not afraid of temperature surges, which are inevitable for a street structure, it will not succumb to insects and rodents;
  • finally, metal combines well with glass, stone, wood and other materials used in the construction and decoration of a private or country house.

A fair characterization cannot do without mentioning the shortcomings. Metal frightens many homeowners with the complexity of processing: it has to be cut, boiled, bent. And if experience and skills are lacking in this, there is no way to make a metal porch yourself. Skills in welding are especially important.

Another disadvantage of metal is contact with water. The metal must be protected by either varnishing or tinting. Anti-corrosion material can be selected immediately. Well, if, as in this case, it is a staircase to the porch, you can think about a voluminous visor, which will become a canopy over the stairs. It will fully or partially protect the structure from precipitation.

Finally, a metal staircase cannot be called a cheap construction. For its manufacture, in addition, you will need a welding wire, electrodes, fasteners.

But in general, without a doubt, for a street staircase leading to the porch, metal will be a wonderful, durable and aesthetically acceptable material.

Species overview

Modern metal ladders are either completely homogeneous - only metal and nothing else, or combined, when other material or materials are present in the structure, for example, wood and stone. But these are not all types of stairs.

Semicircular

Another name for this design is screw. And she, in turn, has two options.

  • In the first case, one spiral-shaped kosour serves as the basis. You will not be able to bend the channel yourself, so they either buy it ready-made, or order bending from specialists. But this option is very expensive.
  • In the second version, instead of the kosour, a central support post is used. Sleeves with welded-on step platforms and intermediate fasteners are strung on it.

Spiral staircases are not so easy to install, and beauty requires sacrifice - such a staircase is not always convenient to use. To somehow neutralize this, the vertical inter-turn distance should be at least 2 m. But for a standard porch on the street, such values are rare.

Corner

The corner construction of a porch for a country house is two marches, one turn with an intermediate platform that touches two walls of the building. The difficulty is that you still need to try to guarantee reliability with the help of channels or I-beams that are built into the supporting structures. But the plus of the corner entrance staircase is also significant: there is no need to install additional retaining columns under the platform with your own hands. And the free space in this case can be used to the taste of the owner.

Frame type

Frames can be open or closed. Open ones are also called rough. The open design implies the manufacture of stringers from metal, balusters and frames for treads. These elements are less conspicuous when a person walks up the stairs. But on top, decorative wooden steps or steps from tiles, stone are made. And such a rough version is good for those who do not feel like a pro in welding. Not the most even seams will still be hidden by the cladding.

The second option is a closed frame in which absolutely everything is made of metal. But this path is for self-confident people who have experience in welding and understand that each welded, cut, bent element will also be the outer part of the structure, not hidden from view. Also, in the case of a closed frame, it is necessary to provide for what will happen with such a ladder in winter, whether it will become traumatic.

For this purpose, it is better to make the steps from a steel sheet with notches; you can close them for the winter with special rubber substrates that are not afraid of subzero temperatures.

Design

This stage is often skipped, believing that experience is enough to cope without drawings. But you need to calculate everything just perfectly, observe all sizes, look at the GOSTs. Those who take this risk are often left with steps that have a higher height than the standardized one, and it is inconvenient to use such a porch, to put it mildly.

What points must be taken into account at the design stage:

  • it is optimal if the number of steps is not even - for example, 3, 5;
  • the porch site must be done a few centimeters below the door threshold - this is important for the height of the staircase;
  • the railing should protrude above the steps at a height of 85-95 cm;
  • the organic step width is 0.3-0.4 m, the wider one will be simply inconvenient, because you will have to spend 2 steps for each step;
  • the riser height is 0.18-0.2 m;
  • with a slope, it is better to do this - to withstand the limit of 26-400, you do not need to do less, because then the staircase will turn out to be too bulky, and with a greater slope, the structure will be very steep.

Why do you need a drawing - to see what the finished staircase will be, what specific material and how much you need to purchase, how exactly the staircase structure is fixed to the porch. If you have no idea how to make a drawing, you can choose a typical one on the Internet. But it is even safer to order a project for specialists. Again, the metal ladder is far from lightweight. And if this is not taken into account, the load can be fraught with cracks on the facade.

Tools and materials

The metal profile is different, more often it is a profile pipe 40 by 60 cm or 60 by 60 cm. To make steps, you need to take a corner of 25 or 30 mm. Of course, sheet metal is required for the base. Also worth taking:

  • suitable fasteners;
  • channel;
  • welding machine;
  • screwdriver.

Something else may seem necessary in the process, but the basis for creating the stairs is listed.

Step-by-step construction instructions

Finally, you can start making the staircase itself. The scheme described below is designed for a person who knows what it means to "weld metal", but is not ready to do something complicated, with an abundance of details.

So, a metal staircase is assembled both separately from the site and in place.

The second option is often preferable

  1. You must first find the installation location. With the determination of the width of the march, two stringers are installed. These are inclined supports, on which the steps will lie. At this stage, the angle of inclination is set.
  2. The lower edges of the stringers need to be fixed. The easiest way to do this is to drive a pair of pins into the ground for each stringer, then they must be welded to each other. Of course, there are more complicated ways, but most builders are inclined towards the proposed option.
  3. Now the steps can be formed. The simplest way is as follows: you need to take a corner, make a rectangle out of it according to the size of the site. On one side it is welded to the stringers. Under the other, you need to install racks from the same corner. They are fixed by electric welding to stringers.
  4. Next, you can start installing and fixing the sites. How this will happen depends on the chosen material. If it is metal, welding is used for fastening, if the wood is self-tapping, concrete is traditionally poured, an iron sheet is placed under the platform.
  5. The final stage is the installation of the railings. Aluminum railings will be very beautiful, they are not afraid of corrosion, but they also cannot bear a lot of weight. The most demanded material for the manufacture of handrails is steel - the option is very expensive, but it will also serve for a long time. The railing on the porch can be welded, prefabricated and forged. The last option is probably the most preferable, but you can't do it yourself - you have to order it from specialists, it's still manual work.

This scheme is standard, other options can be adjusted for it: with a ramp, with wooden steps, with stone, tiled. Naturally, the porch should be in harmony with the house, and the staircase should be a harmonious beginning of the structure. To do this, you need to carefully choose the design of the future structure, looking closely at other options for ladders for the porch in the country or in a country house.

Beautiful examples

And these examples are a good indicator of how economy, relevance and reliability are combined in one property.

10 porches with metal stairs are good options

Very laconic, but not devoid of grace staircase. An odd number of steps, an openwork railings, a convincing design and a good fusion with the home

And although this porch has a metal base, due to the painting in white it does not look brutal, but looks delicate and is very suitable for this house

At the same time, the strength of the ladder is beyond doubt.

Quite wide staircase, laconic design, traditional color - nothing superfluous. The staircase and porch don't get much attention

Image
Image

This option is restrained, standard, but in the case of such initial data, the presence of the basement in plain sight, nothing more expressive is needed. The staircase unpretentiously fits into the general structure of the entrance to the house

Another example of how painting a structure changes its appearance, and a porch with a staircase, although their metal base is visible, adjoins the house with a delicate, light addition

It couldn't be easier - a low porch, which does not distract attention from the house, a beautiful veranda, a chic vegetable frame. The railings are perfectly matched to the overall ensemble of the building's façade

Here is such a two-sided porch, which you cannot imagine simpler, but it still looks pretty. If it seems that it looks heavy against the background of a pistachio house, you can always repaint it

Image

Wide porch, the combination of wood and metal looks great. It invites you to the terrace and is incredibly complementary to your home

Image

A fairly high staircase leading to a high porch. Most likely, the white color of the railings was chosen for design-matching with the color of the window frames

Such a pretty staircase can also be arranged for a lower porch, where there will be only three steps. In general, it looks delicate, does not burden the entrance space. The color of the railings and the facing for the steps are well chosen

Of course, they argue about tastes and how, because to assure that there is nothing better than a metal staircase for the porch of a country house is a thankless task. But it is obvious that such a structure has a lot of advantages, and that it will be a structure for decades.
