Basic requirements for materials

The hallmark of every house is its facade. That is why the building materials that are used for its decoration must have an exceptional decorative effect. In addition, they are tasked with improving the energy efficiency of the entire building and extending its service life. The exterior of any home faces negative atmospheric influences every day, takes on high humidity, UV rays, temperature fluctuations and shocks. That is why, when decorating a house from the outside, it is necessary to focus not only on the stylistic solution, but also on the technical parameters of the finish.

  • Resistance to adverse weather conditions. High quality cladding materials should retain their appearance, shape and technical parameters when wet, icing and changes in ambient temperature.

  • Increased strength. In the event of strong gusts of wind or hail, the cladding must remain intact. The presence of chips, cracks and deformations is not allowed.

  • Low weight will be an additional benefit, ease of installation, ease of maintenance and affordable prices.

Finishing options

To determine what type of exterior cladding for a building will be optimal, it is necessary to analyze the pros and cons of different options.

Block house

A block house is a carefully planed board, the outer part of which has a rounded surface. The use of this building material allows you to create the visual effect of a log facade. This makes the houses aesthetically pleasing.

In addition to decorativeness, the block house has other advantages:

  • environmental Safety;
  • high parameters of noise and heat insulation;
  • ease of installation;
  • resistance to ultraviolet radiation;
  • the material does not fade over time, and does not deform under the influence of temperature differences.

However, the block house also has its drawbacks. It is unstable in relation to moisture and weakly resists fire. To minimize damage to the material, the panels have to be treated with special impregnations, and the coating must be renewed from time to time.

In order for the cladding of the frame structure to serve the entire declared operational period, it is necessary to heed the recommendations of experienced craftsmen:

  • for the outer cladding of such houses, a material 150 mm wide and 3-4 cm thick is suitable;
  • it is better to give preference to larch, maple, as well as pine or spruce.

The best manufacturers of quality sawn timber are firms from Finland and America. When choosing a Russian block house, you should opt for products obtained in the northern regions.

Imitation of a bar

The raised beam resembles a block house, but its difference lies in its external characteristics. The block house has a circular cross-section and imitates a wall lined with solid logs. The cross-section of the imitation of the timber is trapezoidal, so the wall looks even and resembles a sheathing made of profiled timber.

Another difference lies in the intricacies of installation.Block house cladding requires maximum precision and alignment when arranging corners and joints. It is much more difficult to do this with rounded panels than with flat boards, so nowadays imitation of a bar has become much more in demand than a block house.

Wet facade

Sheathing a frame house using the "wet facade" technique has mixed reviews from experienced builders. The advantages of such cladding include:

  • wide range of colors - no other method of cladding a frame structure from the outside allows you to use any desired shade range for decorating the walls of the building;

  • effective wind protection - provided by the device of a dense layer of plaster, which protects the house from the adverse effects of wind;

  • strength - the composition applied to the walls is characterized by resistance to the effects of scorching sunlight.

There are also disadvantages:

  • complexity of application - in order for the exterior of the house to be practical and aesthetic, you will have to carry out a number of labor-intensive preparatory work;

  • duration - when performing the cladding, you will have to wait for each applied layer of the building mixture to dry, therefore the whole process of finishing the building will be quite lengthy;

  • short service life - even if all the main work was performed efficiently, the structure will still begin to crack and collapse due to the subsidence of the foundation.

Siding

One of the most common design options for a frame house outside is siding. Its popularity is due to its undoubted advantages, namely:

  • affordable price - among all other types of facade cladding, vinyl siding is considered one of the most budgetary solutions;

  • practicality - the material is characterized by resistance to any unfavorable weather factors, moreover, it is unpretentious in maintenance;

  • maintainability - if it is necessary to carry out repair work, you can simply replace the damaged plate without dismantling all the others;

  • light weight - optimal for buildings based on a simple foundation.

The design variability will be a pleasant bonus. On sale you can find plastic panels in a wide range of shades and textures. Thanks to this, each user can purchase a product to their liking.

Of course, there were some drawbacks. PVC panels are not strong enough. This flaw is especially exacerbated at persistent sub-zero temperatures.

Brick

External finishing of the facade usually involves the use of lightweight materials. Therefore, stone and concrete slabs are not used here - they give a large load on the supports, and the frame structure is not designed for such operation.

If you want to use the classic design of the house, hollow brick can be the way out. Its advantages include resistance to external atmospheric and mechanical influences, aesthetic appearance and a long service life.

However, the disadvantages could not be avoided. Despite the emptiness inside, the structure still increases the overall weight of the structure. Therefore, when using such a material, there is a need to strengthen the foundation. This should be borne in mind even at the stage of building design.

Tip: brick trim needs flexible binding to the facade of the building, for this purpose specialized steel plates are used.

The frame house building technique is initially cheap. And the use of bricks, even hollow ones, is by no means a budget solution. Given the combination of all the advantages and disadvantages, combined with the high price, brick can hardly be called a practical choice for frame structures.

Cement particle board is a material made from cement with wood and the addition of stone chips. It is in the form of a monolithic slab. Available in standard sizes: length - from 2.6 to 3.2 m, width - 1.3 m and thickness - 35 mm.Such dimensions allow you to quickly and efficiently sheathe even the largest surfaces in the shortest possible time.

The advantages of the material include:

  • fortress;
  • environmental safety;
  • resistance to external damage;
  • ease of installation;
  • unpretentious care;
  • fire resistance;
  • high noise insulation;
  • resistance to water.

However, the appearance of such slabs cannot be called aesthetic. Nevertheless, many creative design ideas can be implemented on their basis.

For instance, to issue an imitation of fachwerk architecture, or to paint the walls with enamel. Among the shortcomings, one can point out the impossibility of self-assembly - the work must be carried out by at least two finishers due to the large dimensions of the slab.

Thermal panels

The external cladding of the frame structure is usually performed using thermal panels. These are solid slabs filled with insulation. The most common are clinker slabs.

This material has exceptional performance characteristics. The use of clinker with a filler in the form of polyurethane foam or expanded polystyrene greatly increases the parameters of heat and sound insulation of the house. Such panels are not afraid of either frost or heat. They are not damaged by ultraviolet radiation, do not deform when in contact with water. They are not liked by fungi, mold and insect pests.

Thermal panels are easy to install. Due to the lack of "raw" work, cladding can be performed at any time of the year. Due to the use of clinker, moisture inside the material is not retained, the coating becomes vapor-permeable, and this saves on the arrangement of the vapor barrier layer.

Such plates look very impressive. The panels are installed close to each other. Therefore, after the completion of all installation work and grouting, the wall looks monolithic, as if natural stone was used for cladding.

At the same time, the material is lightweight, does not load the foundation. He has only one drawback - the high price. However, it is more than compensated for by a long service life.

Tile

Outside the frame structure, cladding using clinker plates is allowed, this allows you to create an imitation of stone. This design gives the exterior a respectable look, while not putting excessive stress on the walls and foundation. The advantages of coverage include:

  • increased strength;

  • immunity to adverse weather conditions;
  • resistance to temperature surges, water and combustion;
  • an impressive range of appraisal and texture solutions.

However, it must be borne in mind that the installation of such a tile requires the obligatory arrangement of ventilated facades. To do this, a wall screen is attached to a timber or steel crate, a solution is applied to it and reinforced, only after that the tiles should be laid. Thus, the installation of the material becomes a laborious process.

This is the main disadvantage of such a finish - it takes a lot of time and requires special qualifications. In addition, the installation of the cladding is technically possible only in dry weather.

Others

In recent years, smart siding has become widespread - a material based on OSB boards. Its outer layer is an imitation of a woody structure. The popularity of the coating is due to its exceptional performance properties:

  • the coating is easy to mount - for this, a crate is built on which the slab is fixed;
  • the plates do not change their design and structure under the influence of unfavorable weather factors.

There are also flaws:

  • after installation, the coating requires mandatory staining;
  • smart siding does not resist fire, even when treated with special flame retardants;
  • the slabs have a very impressive mass, therefore, they create a large load on the base of the structure.

In addition to all of the above, there are some alternative methods of exterior cladding of a frame house

  • Metal siding - is a steel plate treated with a protective layer of enamel. This is an easy-to-install material. Its advantages include light weight and a democratic price. The disadvantages include the risk of dents and chips on the surface, as well as the possibility of rotting of such a coating. In addition, under the influence of direct ultraviolet rays, the base overheats and begins to screen.

Planken - composite composition, visually resembles a planed board. Differs in resistance to combustion and moisture, does not fade under the rays of the sun. Marble chips resemble plaster, but it is distinguished by stone dressing, which significantly increases the resistance to wear

Tips for choosing cladding

When choosing a scheme of external decoration for a frame structure, one must proceed from the peculiarities of operation.

Experienced craftsmen in places where humid weather persists most of the year do not recommend wood finishing materials and block houses. In harsh areas, preference should be given to thermal panels or DSP, but it is better to refuse metal siding.

If the walls are insulated with mineral wool, then you can decorate them with clapboard or block house. Plaster is not used in this situation.

If the external design of frame buildings has an exclusively decorative purpose, then the selection of finishing materials directly depends on the individual preferences of the building owners. And when, in addition to a stylish appearance, additional thermal insulation of the facade is required, it is better to overlay the walls with thermal panels, DSP or siding.

Materials such as OSB, DSP and thermal panels have an optimal combination of cost and quality. The block house is the most expensive, so in practice it is replaced with planken.
