When choosing quality floor coverings, many are wondering whether to use parquet or parquet board. These are the highest quality and most widely used coatings that have gained popularity around the world. Each of them has important advantages and some disadvantages.
Criterias of choice
Before moving on to choosing a specific flooring, you need to decide on some criteria. So, you should objectively assess the financial situation: one coverage will be more expensive than another. It is also important to take into account the functional purpose of the room in which it is planned to put parquet, because the conditions in which the flooring will be contained, as well as the load on the floor, depend on this. Two different coverage options withstand completely different loads.
You should also take into account the stylistic features and individual preferences, choosing between something more refined and simpler. It is necessary to make a choice between practicality, functionality and aesthetics, elegance.
Block parquet is approximately 7 mm thick. Each parquet strip can be from 3 to 8 cm wide and up to 40 cm long. Block parquet is one of the most expensive options, which, nevertheless, will last for many years. The coating is made from valuable wood species, for example, oak, wenge, ash, maple and others, and these tree species are often combined with each other. Thus, you can create interesting and unusual compositions and lay out block parquet in the form of a beautiful pattern.
Popular is herringbone parquet installationthat looks extremely stylish. Such a pattern on the floor allows you to visually make the room wider. Small planks are often used in both spacious and small spaces. They look more neat and expand the space.
Block parquet is a versatile floor covering that can be laid in any room. Small lamellas do not deform and withstand heavy loads. However, such a coating can serve for decades only in rooms with a low level of humidity. Block parquet has many advantages, for example, durability. Manufacturers do not limit the service life if the necessary conditions are met.
The parquet has a homogeneous surface and a natural wood pattern that is unique, so each plank is different from the other. This floor looks presentable and elegant. It looks like a natural solid wood. Block parquet is an environmentally friendly material. An important advantage is that restoration can be carried out if some of the lamellas have been damaged. But this coating also has several disadvantages:
- Under the parquet, you need to lay the substrate on the sub-floor, and this auxiliary layer should be very smooth and even so that the lamellas do not deform and lay down well.
- Finishing is also important as not all varnishes and other similar coatings can provide the correct color reproduction without altering the natural wood shade.
- Block parquet is difficult to maintain, and the boards are prone to rotting in damp conditions. However, it is widespread due to its dressy appearance and durability.
Many craftsmen and experts also refer to the engineering board as parquet. This type of coating is a product that is similar in structure to the parquet itself and to the parquet board. It also consists of several layers, but it contains woodworking products: the base is plywood, the top layer is made of veneer. In this case, the material is well compressed, small constituent elements are laid perpendicular to each other. It is because of this manufacturing technology that the engineering board is more durable and solid.
Such a coating responds well to external factors, it practically does not crack and does not creak even after several years of operation. Externally, the engineering board is completely similar to parquet, it looks presentable.
It contains various silicone additives and adhesives. Manufacturers indicate that these substances are not harmful to humans, since they do not emit toxins during operation. Installation does not require the installation of additional flooring on the subfloor, since, thanks to the dense plywood base, it can be easily installed. Thus, the installation is quite simple when compared to the installation of block parquet. The engineered board is equipped with locks, it is thicker: its top layer is about 8 mm thick. It is covered with varnish and scraping.
The big advantage over the two previous options is the low cost of the engineered board, which is due to the use of low grade wood species. For installation, an adhesive base is used, so installation will be more expensive. In addition, a significant drawback is the impossibility of reconstruction and dismantling in case any section deteriorates. Although the engineered board is quite strong, it is inferior in durability to both parquet and parquet board.
This material consists of several layers, the topmost of which is decorative. It is made from solid wood and defines the appearance of the floor. The middle layer is a resinous wood veneer. It protects the floor from moisture and makes the flooring more durable. At the bottom of the parquet board is a plywood base. For its manufacture, spruce or pine wood is often used. The top layer is usually made no more than 6 mm thick, and in general, the thickness of the parquet board can even reach 20 mm.
The length of the parquet lamella can be up to 2.5 meters. The width of the boards is on average 15 cm. Thus, the parquet is very easy to install as it is relatively large. Joining the lamellas is not difficult at all. In addition, many models have beautiful natural patterns. Parquet boards are impregnated with oil and wax. In addition, varnishing of boards is popular: this way you can emphasize the woody texture and make the natural shade more intense.
Parquet board has a number of advantages over block parquet. It is more budgetary in price, but it can also last for several decades. When laying, in this case, it is not necessary to carefully prepare the floor. Installation of a parquet board is quite simple, so even a person who does not have skills in this area can handle it. The installation itself takes much less time. Such a board is easier to care for, moreover, it is more resistant to external influences and less sensitive to high humidity. The material has the properties of heat and sound insulation, according to these characteristics, it surpasses block parquet.
But this flooring option has several disadvantages. So, if a large amount of liquid is spilled onto the parquet board, then the entire floor covering will have to be replaced, because restoration is impossible. In addition, it is presented in simpler colors and textures than a piece counterpart. When laying boards you won't be able to lay out an interesting pattern because of its size.
If we compare the service life of coatings, then a parquet board usually lasts less, but is more practical to use and maintain.
The size of the planks is one of the main criteria by which parquet and parquet boards are distinguished. Small lamellas are more typical for block parquet, while wide strips are more typical for parquet boards. Another important difference is the composition of the finishing materials. So, a parquet board is a multilayer coating that is thicker and more durable, block parquet is much thinner.
The difference lies in the possibility of restoration: it is much easier to restore the parquet, wipe it and cover it with a layer of varnish, to extend its life. The working layer of the parquet board is thinner, so restoration will be difficult. It can be cleaned from above, but this procedure is not recommended to be carried out more than once, while the parquet can be restored more than once.
Another important difference is the finish of these finishing materials. The parquet board is coated with varnish or oil during the production process and sold already prepared. Block parquet is varnished after installation, therefore, it is impossible to assess its appearance under the varnish layer. The options also differ in price. Planks of block parquet are more expensive than parquet boards because they contain more wood and are of higher quality. The composition of the parquet board also includes low quality wood species, which form its basis.
When creating a parquet board, manufacturers use combinations of different wood massifs, and piece parquet planks are made from only one tree species. The methods of laying are also very different: the parquet is first looped, then polished and varnished, and the parquet board is laid ready-made. It does not need to be covered with anything, and its maintenance is very simple. The parquet board has special locking joints, so installation will not be a hassle. In addition, it differs in that it can be easily dismantled if required.
You can remove this covering and lay it in other rooms several times, and its quality will not change. The parquet floor cannot be dismantled, as this can ruin the entire floor.
The package and the parquet board undoubtedly share some common features. Both coverings are made of natural wood and are made of durable wood species. They can have a number of similarities in appearance: natural wood pattern, texture, shade. In addition, both materials are warm and pleasant to the touch. You can walk on them barefoot without discomfort. Both parquet and parquet board are completely natural and environmentally friendly, they do not emit substances harmful to human health, but, on the contrary, are the safest of all floor coverings.
Both options are durable and durable. In addition, parquet in any form tolerates temperature changes well. Outwardly, both coatings look presentable and elegant, despite the difference in composition and cost. They are versatile and suitable for decorating interiors of different styles.
